dinglethedragon · 03/02/2021 21:20

aubergine, red peppers and courgettes.

oh and marmite

I'm right posh these days 🤣

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 21:21

@Fuckadoodledoooo

SLOUGH. Sloth. Jesus fuck.
I knew exactly where you meant with sloth! We tend to pronounce Slough as Sluff having once been forced to go there looking for petrol late at night.
intheenddoesitreallymatter · 03/02/2021 21:23

Having a roast every Sunday! I don’t know why but it just seems such an upper middle class thing to do.

That and driving old cars. My mum always told me people with ‘old money’ always drive banged up rovers and it’s really stayed with me.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 03/02/2021 21:25

Vienetta
After Eights
Avocado
Ford Escorts
Earrings from H Samuel

ShortColdandGrey · 03/02/2021 21:26

Bernard mathew chicken drumsticks Grin. My mum wouldn't buy them and I was so jealous of my friends who got them haha. I eventually got to try them at school dinners and they were bloody minging.

Gingaaarghpussy · 03/02/2021 21:27

We had friends who were really well off. One of the grandfathers owned skye (apparently). They originally lived in a huge mansion, but downsized to a really nice cottage. They all fecked off to Papua new guinea to teach English (not the kids obvs). When they came back on holiday we used to visit. The first room, after the utility room had a grand piano and a gramophone with a massive horn. Their milk came from a local dairy farm, they had a soda stream. They also had supper instead of dinner. I always thought it was posh to have all these things because we didn't. My mother was tighter than a nuns fanny when it came to spending money on me, but whatever she wanted she got.

RhubarbTea · 03/02/2021 21:29

Having a car. When I was a kid and to an extent even now - anyone with a car is, in my view, a tiny bit posh. Even if it's an old banger. My single mum never had one and still can't drive, couldn't afford to run a car if she could drive. I can't drive but I want to overcome my fear (and weird vision/spacial issues) and learn.

Having a downstairs loo.

Having an open fire or wood burner.

Having a bowl with fruit in it that's just there all the time and there's loads of variety in terms of the fruit in there.

Sunday roasts.

Having wine in the house that you don't buy and immediately drink - in fact having any alcohol that is part of a sort of store, like a drinks cupboard or wine cellar/rack. It's all the same to me. Posh Grin

Doveyouknow · 03/02/2021 21:30

A microwave....it seemed so much more sophisticated to cook frozen peas in a microwave rather than on the hob.

dementedma · 03/02/2021 21:31

I still think en suites are posh. None of our family live in houses which have them.

Due to my job I now work with posh folks. Their houses have boot rooms or mud rooms which sounds very posh to me. They have supper instead of dinner and say “rum” instead of room. I’m watching and learning......

coronafiona · 03/02/2021 21:32

Wooden boats for corn on the cob with little channels for the forks at the end. 1980s!

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 21:33

@Pinklewinkle

The deluxe Christmas hamper in the catalogue from the milk man, complete with large Ye olde Oak compressed ham in a tin and Birds trifle mix!
We were posh apparently because we were the first house in the avenue to have a fridge, this was in the early 50s, my Mum made lollies and we were very popular. We also had one of the first TVs. I recall a roomful of neighbours in the front room watching the Coronation on a tiny, 9 or 12 inch black and white TV with the curtains closed as you had to do during the day. One neighbour's child said I was posh because I wouldn't go and shop-lift sweets, often wonder which prison he finished up in.
TH22 · 03/02/2021 21:34

Holidays to Florida...the cultural capital of the world in my head as a teen 😂

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 21:35

Having a bowl with fruit in it that's just there all the time and there's loads of variety in terms of the fruit in there.

That was always one of the measures of poshness, having fruit in the house when no-one was ill.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/02/2021 21:35

Vienetta!
Anything branded eg Walkers, Ribena etc
Central heating
Having a horse
Hobbies eg ballet or violin (we could not afford for me to do those things)
Butter
Proper juice and not cheap squash

username44416 · 03/02/2021 21:36

One neighbour's child said I was posh because I wouldn't go and shop-lift sweets Now that is posh. Grin

Mistlewoeandwhine · 03/02/2021 21:36

An English accent (am N.Irish)

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 21:38

@iljatdip

Prawn Cocktail

I went to a posh school and was the least posh and the things I can remember thinking were posh were:
people having a "cleaning lady"
more than one bathroom in the house
people travelling by coach (as opposed to a bus)
people having private swimming lessons

My granddaughter said only the other day that she thought that only posh people had a window cleaner! Having an indoor toilet would have been a luxury to us.
Pbur · 03/02/2021 21:40

@FaintlyMacabre

Vienetta
Omg absolutely. I even remember clearly each time we had it when I was growing up, it was such an occasion. Now it’s literally the shittiest ice cream of the lot, like a swirly McDonald’s soft serve hahaha.
Miseryl · 03/02/2021 21:41

I would say that a having a house with three bathrooms is very likely to be a sign of wealth. I doubt many low income families have three bathrooms.

zen1 · 03/02/2021 21:41

Another 80s teen -
Vienetta (only for a treat)
Ferrero Rocher (I used to hope someone would buy me some for my birthday - if they’re good enough for the Ambassador...)
Electronic games e.g a Simon
Video (didn’t get one till the 90s)
Microwave
St Ivel Gold spread

Hopefully84 · 03/02/2021 21:41

Sour cream.
I had never heard of it as a teenager and thought it was "normal cream" and tried to pour it over my pudding during dinner at a school friends house.
The mum had to politely explain.

Miseryl · 03/02/2021 21:43

Calling tea "dinner" when you live in the north is pretty posh! 😂

JKRismyhero · 03/02/2021 21:44

Tea trays! I don't know why I always thought it was posh that people would carry the teas in on a tray.
