I would say

Having 3 bathrooms

OP posts:
HugeBowlofChips · 03/02/2021 20:55

Showers (we had a bath)
Duvets (sheet and blankets)
Pasta (potatoes)
Scrambled egg (fried)
Coffee (tea)
Grew up in the North, went to University in the South. Mind blown. It was 1995 (not 1975, although it might just as well have been in our house.)

Fuckadoodledoooo · 03/02/2021 20:57

Mind you, I still think pizza express is posh. Can't afford it.

Ohandanotherthing · 03/02/2021 20:57

An exercise bike in the bedroom. My parents had friends who had an exercise bike in the bedroom. I always asked to use the bathroom so I could peek through the ajar door to see the exercise bike.

When I was 18 a friend said her house was very large, that they lived in a very leafy, sought-after area and that she had a conservatory. The only reference I had was the Cluedo Board so I imagined a dark, oak-panelled room with a creaky desk a big leather chair and floor to ceiling bookcases and a candlestick. I thought the ultimate in posh-ness.

HugeBowlofChips · 03/02/2021 20:59

Also, Sarah Lee Chocolate Gateau.

supercatlady · 03/02/2021 20:59

La piat d’or wine

Fuckadoodledoooo · 03/02/2021 21:02

@HugeBowlofChips

Also, Sarah Lee Chocolate Gateau.
Nah, common as muck that.

(My best job ever was temping at sarah lee in sloth. So. Much. Free. Cake.)

AliceinBunniland · 03/02/2021 21:02

En suites - maybe they were once but now they're quite commonplace in new builds

Fuckadoodledoooo · 03/02/2021 21:02

SLOUGH. Sloth. Jesus fuck.

gluenotsoup · 03/02/2021 21:04

Hats! Only posh people wore any type of hat, so I thought. I imagined all “ladies” who lived in the countryside must wear long floaty, floral clothes topped with a nice hat, straw usually with ribbons on. All the time. Also, warm hats and wool coats with mittens on children. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Fifthtimelucky · 03/02/2021 21:05

Eating out anywhere (except picnics)
Staying in hotels
Colour television
Terry's Neapolitans
Drinking alcohol at home (rather than in the pub)

I am quite old!

Whythesadface · 03/02/2021 21:05

Getting an offer from Oxford Uni.
My child just got one, the grades they want are not even that high

Crimeismymiddlename · 03/02/2021 21:06

A personal bar in the living room. I remember telling my-basically tee total parents that my school friend had on and it was ‘really classy’.

HugeBowlofChips · 03/02/2021 21:09

@Fuckadoodledoooo

Sarah Lee Chocolate Gateau is definitely posh as it is called Gateau, not Cake, and also it comes from the freezer section in Asda. ;)

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 21:11

@SendMeHome

Having a dishwasher. I was convinced it was a marker of poshness until I was in my mid teens Blush
Many many years ago my dear late OH was worried about getting a dishwasher as the plates and stuff would be damaged by the turning motion of the drum! He was a Science teacher too.
PattyPan · 03/02/2021 21:12

Agree Oxbridge is not posh. I’ve studied at both and while there are posh people they are mainly populated by normal people especially at the postgrad level.

CoronaIsWatching · 03/02/2021 21:12

Pesto

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 21:12

@Onesipmore

A bidet Gold Taps Rise and Shine, Vienetta and Angel delight A colour TV
I would say that that is a very non-U list!
Florabritannica · 03/02/2021 21:12

Hostess trolleys.
Net curtains.
Brushed nylon sheets.
All things my would-be trendy Guardian reading seventies parents despised but which I thought were the height of sophistication

Florabritannica · 03/02/2021 21:13

And Findus Crispy Pancakes.

SpeckledyHen · 03/02/2021 21:13

Detached houses
Going abroad for a holiday
Eating out

Wendyhause · 03/02/2021 21:15

Fish knives and gravy boats.
Serving dishes on the dining table. My mother thought it just made more washing up. I suppose she was right.

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 21:15

@louderthan

Having 'dessert' rather than pudding Going to private school Having bunk beds Voting Tory Having a dishwasher Being rich
Yet pudding is more correct than dessert if it's hot afters. Dessert is certainly a word to be avoided.
Casade · 03/02/2021 21:17

Salt and shake crisps! My mum shopped at Kwicksave no frills crisps 😂😂

nope, its not. we used to buy one from Morrisons and eat it from the box with spoons after having Crispy Pancakes (the frozen ones). DEF not posh lol

Unlike Boots, where we used to put on our posh voices

MolyHolyGuacamole · 03/02/2021 21:19

@ElectraBlue

I think some people here are confusing being wealthy and being posh and using as examples material things (like having 3 bathrooms or designer clothes).

You can have made money and still be common as muck in your behaviour....in spite of your designer clothes and multiple bathrooms...

Thankfully you're here to show us the light
