How do you remember Mr Darcy and the lake?

I like reading about Mandela Effects and although I know logically it's just people misremembering, this one has puzzled me!

How do you remember the famous Mr Darcy scene in Pride and Prejudice?

Did Colin Firth
a. Emerge up out of the water wet

b. We didn't see him emerge, just walking along the bank afterwards

We did not see him emerge

We saw him dive in

We saw him walk around all wet

With surprisingly no weeds on him Grin

Would love to know if I’m right, it’s 20+ years ago I saw it

Flatcokeisnojoke · 02/02/2021 13:56

Off to google Mandela effects

FlibbertyGiblets · 02/02/2021 13:57

Idk tbh.
Prob walking around wet shirted?

I do recall Jennifer Ehle being pg during filming, those dress styles were v forgiving of a bump.

mnahmnah · 02/02/2021 13:57

B

Glenchase · 02/02/2021 13:57

I was convinced he took his shirt off but apparently that was just wishful thinking!

MsOgyny · 02/02/2021 13:58

We didn't see him emerge. Pretty sure of that. But now I'm going to have to watch it all again, just to be sure ;)

SuperbGorgonzola · 02/02/2021 13:59

Maybe people are conflating the Mr Darcy scene with the Daniel Craig scene.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/02/2021 14:05

Dived in.
Swam.
Walked around in a wet shirt.

Tries not to add in the dive from a pier and flapping papers from Loce Actually.

LizBennet · 02/02/2021 14:18

Haha, I literally watched it all on Sunday Grin

Timeforabiscuit · 02/02/2021 14:20

I remember him wading out.. I think my concentration wavered though Grin

What is puzzling about it? It's on netflix, anyone can look at it right now, there's nothing to be argued about. If some people remember it wrong, so what?

The mandela effect nonsense is so irritating as a concept.

freddiesmoustache · 02/02/2021 14:39

It's puzzled me because I remember it wrong yet can picture it so clearly (him emerging from the water)

I don't think it's irritating - rather that it's fascinating that lots of people share false memories!

I agree OP. I’d convinced myself he emerged from the lake. Maybe PP missed the point that so many misremember the scene.

I had no idea she was pregnant 😮!
Windinmyhair · 02/02/2021 14:56

I thought he walked out of the lake too - but I think I'm conflating that and James Bond.

TheRealMrsMorningStar · 02/02/2021 14:56

I haven't even watched it but have seen clips and I swear he emerged from the water (it is the first thing that popped into my head when I read your title!). Maybe I should go watch it.

freddiesmoustache · 02/02/2021 15:08

I think I'll have to watch it to make sure. Several times.

It was Susanna Harker (Jane) that was pregnant.

We didn’t see him come out, we saw him swimming and then walking back to the house with his horse and groom, in a suspiciously clean shirt.

namechange248 · 02/02/2021 15:13

Hmm. I definitely remembered that too, OP! Is anyone else conflating it with the Lost in Austen lake scene?

Took · 02/02/2021 15:18

My brain says the water was hip high as he waded through it with his soaked through shirt and wet hair.

I refuse to believe this is a lie.

freddiesmoustache · 02/02/2021 15:19

I've never seen Lost in Austen so I'm not conflating it with that. So strange!

OP posts:
freddiesmoustache · 02/02/2021 15:19

@Took yes, exactly!

OP posts:
Took · 02/02/2021 15:20

Same, never seen Lost in Austen.

Was there a poster or a trailer or something? I didn’t imagine this. Shock

LonginesPrime · 02/02/2021 15:23

I thought we saw him emerge, then rewatched a couple of years ago and realised 'huh, I was wrong, then'.

I figured the reason I thought that was because everyone always talks/writes in articles about "that scene" and refers to him as "emerging from the lake". So that's why I thought I saw that.

The only reason I thought I remembered seeing him emerge so vividly is my brain piecing together the image, just like it does with any other mental image:

  • I know what Colin Firth looks like
  • I know what he looks like in a wet shirt
  • I know what someone emerging from a lake looks like
  • I was told I had seen this from various articles about Colin Firth
freddiesmoustache · 02/02/2021 15:24

Another strange one is Tom Cruise's dance scene in Risky Business. He slides into the room wearing a white shirt, socks and sunglasses, right?

No. He's in a pink shirt and NO sunglasses!
