What's the BEST advice you've had from MN?

A counter thread to the entertaining post I have just been reading (worst advice received on MN).

Have you had any golden advice from MN? Whether it be functional advice such as cleaning tips that have proven invaluable to critical life advice such as LTB, that you listened to and are glad that you did?

When someone tells you who they are, listen! Such simple but great advice. I spent my whole life second-guessing people and making concessions for shitty behaviour until I heard it.

After a bazillion sleepless nights with DS1 and feeling quite firmly that I'd never sleep again, I read the wonderful advice of 'this too shall pass'. It gave me such comfort in such a terrible time, I shall be forever grateful.

No is a complete sentence.

It was truly liberating to realise I did not have to give a fuck.

RadicalFern · 01/02/2021 16:25

"No is a complete sentence" is the winner for me too.

ghostyslovesheets · 01/02/2021 16:26

on getting a lovely cat PTS - better to do it too soon than too late - really helped me feel at peace with my choice

TeenMinusTests · 01/02/2021 16:27

That DD1 should qualify for extra time in her GCSE exams.
She did.
It made all the difference.

NotFabulousDarling · 01/02/2021 16:27

Don't get drawn into competitive tiredness. Everyone's tired. You can't win at life by outdoing people with how tired you are.

skoobysnax · 01/02/2021 16:28

Use a dishwasher tablet to clean the glass door of the oven. Game changer

Hueandcry · 01/02/2021 16:28

Won't go into details but I have had some amazing, life-changing advice on the relationships board on here

redheadwitch · 01/02/2021 17:38

@skoobysnax Ooh that's one for me to remember!

I hadn't ever heard "not my monkey, not my circus" until I joined MN. That one has been noted on several occasions.

Be your own best friend. Really stuck with me!

Penners99 · 01/02/2021 18:17

No is a complete sentence.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 01/02/2021 18:17

I posted after a bizarre incident of being threatened by a motorcyclist. Most people that replied said to report it, which I did. Nothing came of it, but once I'd made an online crime report I stopped being stressed about it - nothing came of it, and my concerns were probably irrational, but I felt sooo much better.

CATINBOOTSz · 01/02/2021 18:22

But no isn't a complete sentence is it? Hmm

Sniv · 01/02/2021 18:51

Rather more specific than these, but I got some great advice for camping from here - including to put your PJs on under your clothes at the start of the evening, so you don't lose all your body heat changing into them just before bed.

I was the only one who didn't start showing hypothermia symptoms in the middle of the night, and was able to help those that did.

No.

Yes me too Flowers
Aunthe · 01/02/2021 19:42

Use a paracetamol tablet to clean the iron plate when its marked. It really works!

Thesagacontinues · 01/02/2021 19:52

My parents were having a terrible time with my sister and solicitors were involved.

My name came up in a solicitors letter. My sister had lied about me said I had said 'x' and done 'y' etc. I was already having a really hard time as I had PND. I looked for advice here on MN and someone (who must have had a law background) wrote out a fantastic letter for me to send in response to the solicitor.

ScaredOfDinosaurs · 01/02/2021 19:56

Ah dammit @ghostyslovesheets that made me well up, had to have my cat put to sleep last week. Brutal. But overall the right thing. Poor cat.

ghostyslovesheets · 01/02/2021 21:06

so very sad having to say goodbye isn't it ?

ghostyslovesheets · 01/02/2021 21:07

I'm sorry for your loss @ScaredOfDinosaurs and @Minky37

Loushome · 01/02/2021 21:18

Came on to say that the best advice I read was “no answer IS the answer”.

RedWhineandgo · 01/02/2021 21:35

13 years ago... RTKangamummy (I think) advised on not needing to sterilise bottles.

Seriously. Hot soapy water to wash. Rinse and air dry. Never need to sterilise.

Absolutely brilliant advice given to her by a paediatrician when her twins were in NiCU. That thread ran for years.

Hammonds · 01/02/2021 21:38

If you think he is cheating he probably is.

And yeah he was.
