Woke up to an email CC’d to 72 people to tell me my work is wrong

412 replies

CcWanker · 31/01/2021 12:38

It literally just says

“This is WRONG Jane. WRONG”

I send out a report each week to all 72 people. One of those people has found an error and replied to all 72 with the above.

The report is literally a rundown of figures sent to me from different people which I collate into this report, it’s basically a weekly sitrep.

 1. the error is so minor it makes no difference to anything
 2. it isn’t my error it’s the error of the person who sent me that part of the report

This report goes out to exec level people all the way down to the bottom of the food chain. The person who has cc’d everyone is a very senior manager.

Do I respond to just her or everyone and make it clear it’s not my error?

GIGO.....Garbage in Garbage out

cherrytreecottage · 01/02/2021 22:49

@NoSquirrels

I might reply with something like

Thanks for noting that, RudeManager.

Could I please ask that everyone double-checks their data before sending through as I collate what’s sent in to me but have no way of checking for accuracy of figures provided.

Many thanks,

Jane

This is perfect!

@Dyrne

Jesus, I don’t think some of the posters here have ever had to work in a professional environment. Some of the suggested replies are absolutely cringeworthy and would make the OP look terrible.
My thoughts entirely!
Flatoutonsofa · 01/02/2021 23:56

And actually I think it would be better to make alternative plans, as it sounds to me they'd be highly likely to back out at the last minute with some spurious excuse. That would be very stressful.

Pinkfluff76 · 01/02/2021 23:58

Don’t reply all. No offence to you as I realise you feel awful and not sure which is the best way forward, but it’s very childish in my very humble opinion. Good luck Op!

plebsticle · 02/02/2021 00:04

In law firms this is par for the course. We accept it and g on with it. Shit isn't it

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/02/2021 00:07

Look you own this report. So if you don’t have control over the contents then you must make it clear to everyone you’re sending to. I would even use this as an opportunity to argue with your manager what the point of sending this report to so many people is because the relevant managers would already know their figures as their team sends the data to you.

Refine your target audience - if it’s just execs / seniors then prune everyone else off that list. If it’s just for normal staff then prune the execs. Sending a compilation report to 75 people doesn’t seem right to me unless you own the data and can vouch and explain inaccuracies.

This, don’t public shame anyone else or mention directly someone else’s mistake. This covers everything.

I would also email the horrible manager directly with someone along the lines of:
dear x, just to clarify, I collate the figures and have no way of checking the data, I would appreciate not having a ‘reply all’ addressed to me about an error that is not mine. Kind regards

SHONNYSMUMMY · 02/02/2021 08:42

@CcWanker

I’m not sure how I can bcc anyone. I send the original email and the 72 are a contact group. I just type the name of the group and it goes to all 72 of them if you see what I mean.
Hi, type the same name of the group into the bc line instead of the cc line.

I'm glad another manager stepped in and put that person in their place in a better manner than I possibly would have.

Lalliella · 02/02/2021 09:07

Any news from yesterday OP?

CruCru · 02/02/2021 11:58

I'm not expecting the OP to come back. Depending on her workplace, putting details of shitty emails on social media might be considered quite a bad thing to do. Anyone who was copied into the first, shitty email would recognise it here.

SewingandGrowing · 02/02/2021 13:26

Do you work in the NHS by any chance?! This sort of behaviour is all too common. Disgusting. When they go low...resist the urge to join them!

Janegrey333 · 02/02/2021 13:29

@Bluntness100

I’m not sure if you’ve responded but I’d do something like this

Many thanks for your feedback and great catch.

Please can I take this opportunity to remind everyone to validate their data to ensure accuracy prior to sending it to myself for correlation.

Many thanks

Jane,

I think the OP has to ensure there are no errors in that sort of response. To take one example, the use of “myself” in “...sending it to myself” is not good English. It wouldn’t do for the OP to make matters worse.
Janegrey333 · 02/02/2021 13:31
@Bluntness100

If she wants to he professional and correct, she shouldn't send any email which says, "sending it to myself" because that just will be another WRONG. You dont say myself in that context. The correct word is just me.

I dont understand the mumsnetter obsession of avoiding the word me at all costs, especially when saying myself makes you look like an idiot trying to be smart.
Agreed. Not sure about “great catch”, either...

Janegrey333 · 02/02/2021 13:37

Agreed. Not sure about “great catch”, either...

As for “Can I take...”, that should be ‘MAY I take...”.

HaveringWavering · 02/02/2021 13:51

If we are going full-on pedantic here, the other response that has been widely praised also contains a grammatical error:

“Could I please ask that everyone double-checks their data...”

should actually be “double-check” without the “s”.

iklboo · 02/02/2021 14:25

THE OP HAS NOT RESPONDED AND IS NOT GOING TO RESPOND. IT WAS SORTED BY A SENIOR MANAGER.

HaveringWavering · 02/02/2021 14:28

@iklboo

SOMETIMES MUMSNET THREADS STOP BEING ABOUT THE OP’S SPECIFIC DILEMMA AND JUST BECOME GENERAL DISCUSSIONS THAT MIGHT HELP OTHERS IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS.

That is incorrect. The word “everyone” is singular - every ONE - so “...everyone double-checks...” is perfectly correct, in the same way that “The pupil double checks...” is correct.
Janegrey333 · 02/02/2021 14:57

double-checks

Janegrey333 · 02/02/2021 14:58

@iklboo

THE OP HAS NOT RESPONDED AND IS NOT GOING TO RESPOND. IT WAS SORTED BY A SENIOR MANAGER.
That’s fine. Not everyone reads everything immediately. No need to shout. Hmm
LouRidley · 02/02/2021 15:12

Also to add I would send in one email the corrected report and your message so that this unfortunate thread doesn’t fill in the inbox of the 72 people.
Something like:
Thanks for pointing it out Mrs Twat,
I’ve made enquiries to the relevant department for this small mistake to be corrected and you will find the amended version of the report attached.”
Like this you convey the mistake was menial, that you don’t really give a crap as it’s not your mistake and also take the high ground without throwing your colleague under the bus. A side message to your manager saying you thought the form was poor could also go a long way. Always amazes me how in companies “difficult” personalities are allowed to thrive and behave however they want at the detriment of others.
In any case, don’t let it bother you, no one will think anything of you over that, just reflects poorly on him/her.

LouRidley · 02/02/2021 15:15

Just saw the update - amazing, you’re off the hook Grin

LouRidley · 02/02/2021 15:16

@iklboo thank your for enlightening us in such an agreeable manner :D

Bluesheep8 · 02/02/2021 15:16

Correct!
