Woke up to an email CC’d to 72 people to tell me my work is wrong

CcWanker · 31/01/2021 12:38

It literally just says

“This is WRONG Jane. WRONG”

I send out a report each week to all 72 people. One of those people has found an error and replied to all 72 with the above.

The report is literally a rundown of figures sent to me from different people which I collate into this report, it’s basically a weekly sitrep.

 1. the error is so minor it makes no difference to anything
 2. it isn’t my error it’s the error of the person who sent me that part of the report

This report goes out to exec level people all the way down to the bottom of the food chain. The person who has cc’d everyone is a very senior manager.

Do I respond to just her or everyone and make it clear it’s not my error?

People saying she should report as bullying are barking mad.

It will make you look ridiculous. At the moment you look good.

Also don’t play the “it’s not my responsibility to check”.... it’s your email and report so the content is your responsibility

user47000000000 · 01/02/2021 15:28

Btw I think the rude mgr was way out of line and awful and shouldn’t have done what they did. I’m giving people at work a wider berth than normal as people are under so much pressure in life... hopefully the rude mgr has apologised to you directly. They will feel AWFUL I’m sure.

ILoveShula · 01/02/2021 15:31

@peak2021, I did say I had not RTFT.

Mmn654123 · 01/02/2021 15:34

You should email nice manager who sent the 'protected time' email immediately and thank him - say you had seen her message over the weekend and it was indeed rather upsetting but that you thought it best to respond immediately. Say that you really appreciate his publicly supportive message and that you appreciate people may have submitted erroneous data to you, but that it doesn't seem very fair to cc a large group when those people who may now assume you have made a mistake of some sort when that is not the case.

Lay it on thick!

Mmn654123 · 01/02/2021 15:37

People will assume Jane has done something wrong unless someone says that isn't true.

72 people won't know the detail of how the data gets to the report. So actually this is important. If it's her job to collate the figures but not her job to verify the data then they can either change that process or be very clear that isn't the process - either way it wasn't the process last week so it isn't right she is blamed.

And it matters because she may move to other roles internally and so it matters if people think she's done something wrong. Absolutely tell nice intervening manager how upset you are.

Mmn654123 · 01/02/2021 15:38

sorry in my first message it should have said 'best NOT to respond immediately'!

skodadoda · 01/02/2021 15:39
@Bluntness100

If she wants to he professional and correct, she shouldn't send any email which says, "sending it to myself" because that just will be another WRONG. You dont say myself in that context. The correct word is just me.

I dont understand the mumsnetter obsession of avoiding the word me at all costs, especially when saying myself makes you look like an idiot trying to be smart.
I strongly agree with you about this. I also wish people would learn when to use ‘me’ or ‘I’.

Bluntness100 · 01/02/2021 15:41

Sending it to ME! Not “myself”. FFS. Faux formality at its worse

Good Lord, calm down.

Op can’t possibly be expected to have the knowledge and expertise required for all individuals:departments who submit sections of the report. Particularly if specialised technical knowledge is included.
LittleTiger007 · 01/02/2021 15:47

@Haggisfish

I would, and end it with a request/reminder for everyone to send any corrections to you individually.
Absolutely do this ASAP.
GetTheDebtGoneIn2021 · 01/02/2021 15:53

Definitely don’t respond to a cc’d e-mail with another cc e-mail. Makes you look as bad as them.

ByeClaire · 01/02/2021 15:59

That email is definitely a dick move on her part.
Great email from the other manager.

BUT what I don’t think you’ve answered OP is how come you knew which data was wrong since Rude Manager’s email didn’t specify it? (I presume it didn’t as you said it literally just said the two lines you shared here.)

As a pp said, if you could easily identify the duff info, could it be argued you should have done that before you sent the report? Not having a go but you want to make sure you have all your ducks in order and are sure if your responsibilities before responding.

CruCru · 01/02/2021 16:22

Given that you are not meant to be working at the weekend (and don’t describe yourself as senior), please would you consider not checking emails on a Sunday? While this thread is very interesting for me, this has taken up your headspace during your time off. If you’d only checked email today, you would have seen the shitty email and the email telling her to cut it out right after it.

Yes, this in spades.
Jolie12345 · 01/02/2021 16:34

Definitely not professional to reply all again. Most copied in will not care that the report was wrong and will not judge the sender of the report one bit. Errors happen. Just fix and resend, but I’d only do that if it makes a difference to the content. Otherwise just make sure the same error isn’t made next week. I feel for you but this will be much bigger deal to you than anyone else and making a thing of it will do more professional and repetitional damage that an error that you didn’t even make

Tal45 · 01/02/2021 16:41

What a horrible woman. I guess higher management explain her behaviour as being down to 'cultural issues' as they're afraid of her accusing them of racism if they call her out on it. As least you've found someone willing to stand up to her bullying ways. I wouldn't get involved you'll just look petty and passive aggressive (as tempting as it is). Now the other manager has got involved I would leave it to them, although when they speak to you about it be clear about just how bad this has made you feel, how totally unacceptable it is and how humiliating it is to have copied in the whole group. She needs disciplining for this x

user47000000000 · 01/02/2021 16:42

Don’t ask people to email you individually with corrections. People will know that emailing 70 odd people like that is not the best way to do things. Just send out the amended Corrrect report

redsquirrelfan · 01/02/2021 17:01

Definitely not professional to reply all again

I once had a work mobile phone where the default setting was to reply to all!

72 people is quite a lot, but about 20 years ago I absolutely did reply to all when it was maybe 6 people and the only reason they'd been copied in was to protect the sender's arse and to try to blame me for something. I really did make a point of replying to all and saying I assumed they'd been copied in for a reason. Some of you may not agree with that but I was angry at the time. However, it's true that often it's the response to something that gets peoples' backs up even more than the original "wrong".

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 01/02/2021 17:06

@CcWanker

Oh oh oh UPDATE

Another senior manager has replied. Same level as ccwanker

“Can I remind all staff of protected rest periods (weekends) and the current focus on staff wellbeing within the company, unless urgent emails should not be sent over the weekend.

Thank you for your work Jane, I’m sure we can pick this up on Monday”

GrinGrinGrin

Sounds like senior manager has waded in to prevent a cc war breaking out over the weekend. Awesome.

How did it go today, OP?

dysongirl · 01/02/2021 17:21

She is obviously a c u next Tuesday Smile

Deez65 · 01/02/2021 17:26

I would say something like.
You are absolutely right but I can only work with the figures that are sent to me. If you would like to check the figures when they are given to me and before they are collated by me, that would be great.

fromcooktochef · 01/02/2021 17:28

I´d be really careful. Yes reply all. Saying sorry for the inconvenience of a reply all but you think its important to answer this.
Think of everyone as if they could be you. The person that sent the error, the manager that said wrong in capital letters, and the rest in the email list.
Don´t blame or name anyone.
Say thank-you for pointing that out and sorry if it caused distress.
Explain that that particular error was actually in the data sent to you , and that you are not meant to check.
Say thank-you again. that this is a really good point. Is this the only way of checking errors along the chain.
and finally, almost in small print, say that it might be better if errors were addressed individually first, and then when the source was located and the error fixed, and then corresponding reports like yours could be updated, then everybody could be informed in a reply all of the update. And also you realise it´s easy to make the mistake of a reply all. We´re all human but it´s good to raise this point.

Try to take the emotion out. It was harsh but it may have been a reaction and the reply all may have been a mistake. Try to err on the positive side and reply like that - but cover all bases.

Mumgonenuts2020 · 01/02/2021 17:29

Maybe they need some more email training, I thought when someone replied it didn’t include the 72 people ccd in? It always used to be too big to send to all those recipients!! I think they may have just not realised and also they maybe stressed working from Home!! This happens at work generally and since the early 2000’s!!

grassisjeweled · 01/02/2021 17:42

You're in hot threads, OP! On the email round up
