Woke up to an email CC’d to 72 people to tell me my work is wrong

CcWanker · 31/01/2021 12:38

It literally just says

“This is WRONG Jane. WRONG”

I send out a report each week to all 72 people. One of those people has found an error and replied to all 72 with the above.

The report is literally a rundown of figures sent to me from different people which I collate into this report, it’s basically a weekly sitrep.

  1. the error is so minor it makes no difference to anything
  2. it isn’t my error it’s the error of the person who sent me that part of the report

This report goes out to exec level people all the way down to the bottom of the food chain. The person who has cc’d everyone is a very senior manager.

Do I respond to just her or everyone and make it clear it’s not my error?

Great comment. I would do the same as @NoSquirrels
Perfect answer 👌

csigeek · 01/02/2021 17:53

I wouldn’t even acknowledge it directly to be honest.
I would obtain the correct data from the relevant department.
Resend the report but make it clear the relevant department reviewed and updated.
Don’t name names.
Be vague but be pointed in confirming it’s not your error.
Don’t stoop to their level of calling out mistakes.

Rachel1874 · 01/02/2021 17:55

I would reply to all and just say a simple oops sorry that's the info I was given. I would not go on to then expose someone else in the same way. And I would possibly end with a simple could everyone please double check info before it is sent to me thank you.

louise4754 · 01/02/2021 17:58

But the first manager wasn't cc'd into the second managers email.

Plus why were you checking your mail if you don't work weekends?

Ddot · 01/02/2021 18:03

What a bitch.
Just email all 72 and apologise for the error, BUT as you rely on the data being correct could everyone please double check their own data, before sending in. THANKS

exaltedwombat · 01/02/2021 18:04

Yes. Stir it up into a mega HR issue. NOT!

Ddot · 01/02/2021 18:05

Do not out the person responsible. You could send ( them )email too

GrannyRose15 · 01/02/2021 18:05

I'd be reminding everyone to use Bcc. This is so outrageous it's off the scale.

FortniteBoysMum · 01/02/2021 18:06

I would reply to all saying.... Thank you for letting everyone know. I will privately email the person responsible asking for the correct details to update this. As you are aware I only process the information provided. Kind regards....

iklboo · 01/02/2021 18:08

But the first manager wasn't cc'd into the second managers email.

Yes she was. The second manager replied to all, including her.

anotherlongwalk · 01/02/2021 18:09

RTFT people!!

OP we are eagerly awaiting update! Did wanker manager and brilliant manager have a fisty-cuffs today?!

DrBlackbird · 01/02/2021 18:11

@Blueroses99

Reply to all so that they don’t know that it’s your error. Explain the data (and error) came from Y and that you collate the data but are not responsible for verifying the accuracy of the data.
Definitely this ^^
Pinkfreesias · 01/02/2021 18:14

I wouldn't say 'it is so & so's error' as that would make you no better than her, but I would reply to her privately, reminding them that you only collate the figures you're given and stating that it was unprofessional and unfair that they CC'd in the world and his dog.

She sounds like a right cow. She has no trouble in putting you down so don't worry about giving her a taste of her own medicine.

ExitChasedByABear · 01/02/2021 18:17

@BoomBoomsCousin

If you did want to do this, just send the email to yourself In the to line and put the group in the BCC line. They will all individually (including Rude manager) get a bcc of the email.

I wouldn’t send your response to everyone, though. For the most part, Rude manager’s email will have annoyed the others in the group. They won’t have read it and thought “God, Jane’s terrible for getting that wrong”. They will have thought “ffs Rude manager, stop being an absolute ass to people and wasting out time.”. Don’t make them think “ffs, Jane, stop wasting our time.”

Work with nice manager and your manager to decide if you need to send an updated report put or a general reminder of the protocols for the report creation or for report feedback. The send that to the whole group as a regular email or as a line in the report email every time you send it out. Leave response to Rude manager about her appalling attitude up to your or her manager. If you are really pissed off that she’s like this and nothing gets done, make a bit of a stink about being treated like that to your manager. Engaging directly with her is far more likely to damage your position at work than make her feel she was in the wrong in any way.

I agree with this ☝️
Madamum18 · 01/02/2021 18:20

NoSquirrels advice is spot on|!

cakewench · 01/02/2021 18:22

I think especially in light of the other manager's response, I wouldn't email the group any more. His response serves the purpose yours would have done, and if you do it, too, it starts to be a bit redundant. The point has definitely been made.

I'd still follow up with your line manager etc but not the entire group of 72.

godmum56 · 01/02/2021 18:27

I'd say something like (and send it to everybody)

Dear Rude Manager,
Thank for you email of xxx.(date)
Can I remind you that I have no way of checking the information that is sent to me and any discrepancies would be better taken up with the person in question?
Can I also ask everyone to check their data before they send it to me to avoid any repetition of this? I am sure nobody wants to waste their colleagues' time.
I am sure that you didn't intend to copy this email to everybody! We have all done it once so no apology is neccessary

many thanks
polite person on the moral and manners highground

iklboo · 01/02/2021 18:33

READ. THE. FULL. THREAD

louise4754 · 01/02/2021 18:33

@iklboo Ah I read it wrong it was the person who made the mistake not included in the 72

jentinquarantino20 · 01/02/2021 18:36

It’s a low move messaging out of work hours, it would boil my blood having to wait to deal with it but the other managers response is perfect.

I would definitely send a message to all at 9am on the dot saying, sorry I’ve only just seen this email as I wasn’t working yesterday. Thank you for pointing out the error, I will liaise with who sent me the information send out a corrected version. Bitch. Lol

Empressofthemundane · 01/02/2021 18:37

First, the person who sent that email made an ass of themselves not you. Everyone reading it is judging them, not you.

Second, I would respond to everyone in copy with something like:

Thank you for the correction XYZ. As a matter of process, I just want to remind everyone to send corrections without replying all. As the list is collated from many sources, there are often corrections and we try not to load everyone’s email with cross chat to rectify the inevitable errors.

adrianmolesmole · 01/02/2021 18:39

@NoSquirrels

I might reply with something like

Thanks for noting that, RudeManager.

Could I please ask that everyone double-checks their data before sending through as I collate what’s sent in to me but have no way of checking for accuracy of figures provided.

Many thanks,

Jane

I'd do something like this.

And then follow this up with your line manager and/or HR about this type of email. I would be so mad if it happened to me.

Justa47 · 01/02/2021 18:43

@CcWanker

Just reply to her.
Not every one
Ask her what the issue is

As you just collect the data

They forward to your boss saying just trying to understand the issue. And ask boss if you should do anything else

Then sit back and see.

The big bosses will know that is wrong.

You don’t crap pubically down the food chain.

ImsorryWilson · 01/02/2021 18:44

Can I repost this cos it’s so good?

justchecking1
I will sort that IMMEDIATELY, Betty. IMMEDIATELY

combatbarbie · 01/02/2021 18:44

Urg was hoping for an update on what's happened at work today!
