Woke up to an email CC’d to 72 people to tell me my work is wrong

CcWanker · 31/01/2021 12:38

It literally just says

“This is WRONG Jane. WRONG”

I send out a report each week to all 72 people. One of those people has found an error and replied to all 72 with the above.

The report is literally a rundown of figures sent to me from different people which I collate into this report, it’s basically a weekly sitrep.

  1. the error is so minor it makes no difference to anything
  2. it isn’t my error it’s the error of the person who sent me that part of the report

This report goes out to exec level people all the way down to the bottom of the food chain. The person who has cc’d everyone is a very senior manager.

Do I respond to just her or everyone and make it clear it’s not my error?

Haggisfish · 31/01/2021 12:40

I would, and end it with a request/reminder for everyone to send any corrections to you individually.

CcWanker · 31/01/2021 12:40

FWIW I am also bottom of the food chain!

I feel mortified. It isn’t my job to check the info people send me. I wouldn’t even have a way of checking it. It’s all different departments I just collate and put into this report

I wouldn't send it today. I'd plan what to write and check with a friend or colleague before replying. I would absolutely make all those points very clear, though.

Blueroses99 · 31/01/2021 12:43

Reply to all so that they don’t know that it’s your error. Explain the data (and error) came from Y and that you collate the data but are not responsible for verifying the accuracy of the data.

Kinsters · 31/01/2021 12:45

Is she always so rude? Everyone who has dealt with her before will realise she's over-reacting and everyone who hasn't will make a mental note that they don't want to!

If you know what the error is then I would correct and send back out to everyone. Maybe highlight in the email what the correction is. I wouldn't blame anyone else though, no point. They'll know it was their mistake. People send report corrections all the time.

NoSquirrels · 31/01/2021 12:47

I might reply with something like

Thanks for noting that, RudeManager.

Could I please ask that everyone double-checks their data before sending through as I collate what’s sent in to me but have no way of checking for accuracy of figures provided.

Many thanks,

Jane

Oblomov20 · 31/01/2021 12:48

This is so poor.
Talk to your manager.
Prepare a response. Stating you just collate. (And if Jane's is wrong take it up with Jane directly. You bitch! Wink)
And as Haggis suggests , also requesting any queries are emailed to you individually.

Chewbecca · 31/01/2021 12:49

Don’t reply quickly is my best advice, have a good think, gather all tips from here and draft the best reply possible.

BringBiscuits · 31/01/2021 12:50

To give them the benefit of the doubt could they have accidentally replied all rather than just reply? Still rudely put though!

4amWitchingHour · 31/01/2021 12:50

Ugh, what a twat. I would take the (almost) high ground and send three emails:

  1. To the twat, saying that you only collate the data, and have contacted the person responsible for a correction
  1. To the person responsible for the data to get a correction
  1. To all 72, setting out that you have requested a correction from the person responsible, and that if any further errors are noticed to please raise them with you directly so you can make arrangements for correction

This approach makes it clear you've done nothing wrong, and makes it clear the twat is a twat without having to directly respond to their email. I'm sorry you work with such a twat Thanks

IthinkIm · 31/01/2021 12:51

I would reply

This isn't my mistake but I will email the person who made it privately to let them know.

Regards

Jane

SendMeHome · 31/01/2021 12:52

I’d send something like what NoSquirrels wrote. Clear that this isn’t your fault, and doesn’t direct the public shaming to anyone else.

4amWitchingHour · 31/01/2021 12:52

*This approach makes it clear you've done nothing wrong also without dropping the person who did make the mistake in the the shit

LApprentiSorcier · 31/01/2021 12:52

I would forward this to your line manager and say you recognise there was an error and it needed to be pointed out, but the tone of the email and cc'ing it to 72 people was inappropriate - could your line manager please ask that emails such as this are sent on an individual basis or via line manager only in future.

BlueTimes · 31/01/2021 12:53

I’d leave it for today but then I would reply saying “thank you for your email. Just to clarify, it’s not my job to check the information collated and forwarded which is where this error originated. However, I can confirm it does not impact on the rest of the information provided which is correct.”

Then I would log a grievance with HR for bullying because being belittled like that is office bullying.

Mysa74 · 31/01/2021 12:53

I'd do this ^ Covers everything and is polite while making it perfectly clear to the hard of understanding that it's not your fault.
PegasusReturns · 31/01/2021 12:54

“Thanks for your feedback.

The report is a compilation of figures provided to me by the relevant function/department/site.

Please can I request that everyone ensures they double check data prior to sending it to me as I have no means to verify.

Corrections can be sent to me individually.

Thanks.....”

Everyone will know that the person who sent you the email is a dick

Mylittlepony374 · 31/01/2021 12:55

@NoSquirrels has the response for you. Polite and gets point across.

NoSquirrels · 31/01/2021 12:56

I think I’d also add to my earlier note something like:

I’m very happy to issue a corrected report - please do email me individually with any updates if required.

Many thanks

Etc.

Always kill with kindness.

partyatthepalace · 31/01/2021 12:56

Yep - this.

But do reply.

Nb - she looks stupid, not you. So worry not.

WhoseThatGirl · 31/01/2021 12:57

Well he’s a gem isn’t he.
I can never understand how people like him get into positions of power.

CcWanker · 31/01/2021 12:57

She is well known for being a dick.

She once emailed a colleague to ask them if they could read. Seriously.
