Does Vitamin D improve your mood ?

Since October I’ve been taking extra Daily Vitamin D tablets on top of my daily multi vitamin and I feel like my mood and outlook has really improved.

I originally started taking them for the Covid boost that I kept reading about , that it would help immune system and read people with higher levels of Vit D coped better with Covid.

Now I don’t know if it’s just coincidence but I’ve been feeling really good , upbeat , organised , not so tired just really level and calm.

This is even with lockdown and DC at home , all of which is obviously utterly crap but I don’t feel like it’s dragging me down.

I don’t know if it’s the Vitamin D but it’s the only thing I’ve added or changed to my life

( already normal BMI , healthy , go outdoors daily no matter the weather etc )

I tried to look it up online but can’t find any information on vitamin D affecting mind only body

I don't know, but I've had deficiency in the past and I ended up with very low mood, largely because of my sore bones!!

IceDiscoSkater · 30/01/2021 13:07

Interesting

I wouldn’t say I had low mood previously but I was getting myself in a pickle over silly small things and regularly stressed and occasions of sadness over lockdown etc.

I’ve not had that for ages , I’d describe it as just being able to cope better and like I’m tracking along a nice straight line now.

Yes, me!
I started taking it for immunity boosting reasons.
This winter is the first I can ever remember not having the winter blues and struggling with low energy.
Like you I spend time outside in all weathers.
No more commuting has also helped I think!

Wow good question, I started taking it last autumn and actually I have been a lot more positive these past few months but I never connected the two. Maybe it does?!

SunshineXX1 · 30/01/2021 14:04

Same happened to me.

Honestly, miracle drug.

I thought I suffered from SAD for years. Upgraded the lights throughout my house, had a lightbox in the office etc, helped a bit but mostly I was lethargic and low for 4 months of the year.

Vitamin D3 deficiency diagnosed in one of those tickbox medicals the GP gives you when you’re 40. In the middle of August when you’d think you’re getting loads of sunshine.

Took them, didn’t really feel any different for a bit. Realised as I was walking home one evening shuffling through the autumn leaves that I quite liked the sensation. Previously it was actually quite triggering as it meant winter ahead.

No SAD that winter, or the winters since.

It also got rid of the period pains that had blighted my life for 20+ years.

Muuuuuuuum · 30/01/2021 14:07

I think so. I was so miserable and low, totally lacking in energy and doing anything felt like a huge effort. GP did blood test and diagnosed vitamin D deficiency - 12 months later I feel completely different. My brother had a very similar experience.

IceDiscoSkater · 30/01/2021 15:20

Oh this is great to hear then.

I think it must be , it’s the only thing I can think of I’ve changed.

I really do feel great ( obviously not ecstatic due to lockdown and my DC are a PITAGrin) but I just feel , well , fine about it all.

I think I’ll keep taking throughout the year even in summer , read that we probably don’t get enough naturally even in UK summers with all the rain and clouds.

How much do you take and how often OP? I am hoping to improve my mood with it!

Yes this is my exact experience, started last October and just started noticing I’m feeling like a better , calmer , more positive version of myself.

I obviously can’t prove it , but it’s interesting to hear others feel the same.

I take my daily multivitamin which has 400iu

Then I take an additional Vit D which is 1000ui

So total. 1400ui per day

I think so. This is the second winter I’ve taken vit D and found it much easier to get through as find the Winter really miserable.
I also haven’t had a cold since I started it.

LimitIsUp · 30/01/2021 15:31

Don't know about Vit D (am off to google), but Magnesium glycinate / magnesium chelate and magnesium taurate definitely help with mood and anxiety as do Probiotics (see recent Beeb documentary on improving mental health). I think that programme briefly recommended Bio-Kult multi strain pro biotics (quite a departure for the BBC to recommend a brand, but my independent research bore this out)

hamstersarse · 30/01/2021 15:33

Vitamin D is a hormone.
It can definitely improve mood in the winter, in comparison to living with a deficiency

I despair that there are still people not supplementing it at the moment

Dinnertime22 · 30/01/2021 15:35

My nails have definately become stronger.

greenflamingo · 30/01/2021 15:35

My experience is the same as yours OP.

Great link , I didn’t know it was a hormone either ...

We take it since October and I think it helped with the SAD, not fully but I didn't feel so down as in other years.

I still have bouts of bad days mood wise, but they are over quicker and mainly when I really get mad at lockdown restrictions or the news are very depressing.

Sunshineonarainydayy · 30/01/2021 15:52

"It also got rid of the period pains that had blighted my life for 20+ years."

Wow I'd never made the connection but think this must be the same for me. Last few months have finally been pain free after decades of pain but I couldn't think why.

Softpebbles · 30/01/2021 15:56

Could anyone let me know what doses you take and any links. I think this is something that I need to try 😊

SirVixofVixHall · 30/01/2021 16:01

I had extremely low levels and have been taking a supplement all year and I think I am more good tempered, definitely.

LaceyBetty · 30/01/2021 16:03

This is great to read. I've just started on 1000ui.

Sentry70 · 30/01/2021 16:13

I've been taking it for months and sadly have noticed no difference whatsoever, in any area either physical or emotional. It's a shame as I had high hopes after reading everyone else's reviews.

donerwillbehere · 30/01/2021 16:14

I saw a nutritionist in October , she prescribed vitamin D 2000iu initially tablet and now spray which is 4000iu.

donerwillbehere · 30/01/2021 16:15

Don't feel changes in mood , but feel somewhat reassured in slight help against Covid .
