Does Vitamin D improve your mood ?

IceDiscoSkater · 30/01/2021 12:54

Since October I’ve been taking extra Daily Vitamin D tablets on top of my daily multi vitamin and I feel like my mood and outlook has really improved.

I originally started taking them for the Covid boost that I kept reading about , that it would help immune system and read people with higher levels of Vit D coped better with Covid.

Now I don’t know if it’s just coincidence but I’ve been feeling really good , upbeat , organised , not so tired just really level and calm.

This is even with lockdown and DC at home , all of which is obviously utterly crap but I don’t feel like it’s dragging me down.

I don’t know if it’s the Vitamin D but it’s the only thing I’ve added or changed to my life

( already normal BMI , healthy , go outdoors daily no matter the weather etc )

I tried to look it up online but can’t find any information on vitamin D affecting mind only body

Right. I’m lifting my self imposed Amazon ban!

I take it because of Covid this year but I have stopped taking my multi vitamins as they also have vitamin D and I don’t want to overdose on D. Then I worry that I might get deficient in other vitamins🤔

im5050 · 30/01/2021 16:27

I will just say that if you have any gastric problems ulcers gallstones stomach surgery in the past then you may have problems absorbing the vitamins as a tablet form
There is a spray - better you D3000 from Amazon that works much better especially if you have suffered from stomach problems
This goes for other vitamin tablets if you have suffered from stomach problems
If your really serious about your levels I recommend Thriva - get your levels tested before you start taking them and test for a few other like B12 iron levels Diabetes and vitamin D
Then test again 3 - 4 months later to see what level your at
You can do the test at home
And it’s idiot proof
Plus if you goggle Thriva you can probably get a voucher for 20-50 percent off first test

LimitIsUp. What brand of magnesium are you taking to get all 3 types of magnesium in one capsule please?

I have heard it helps with sleep but never sure which type to try.

Yes

I looked up the WHO and other recent studies and even our UK government are reviewing the 400iu daily dose recommended as being too low. ( 400 is the standard amount of Vit D in most multi vitamins in UK market )

Apparently anything between 2-4000 is ok in the new studies
But I’m just adding in extra 1000 and the 1400 a day seems to have impacted me positively.

I didn’t want to go too high , like yourself.

I started taking vitD just over a month ago. Before taking it I was falling asleep when I was laid with dd waiting for her to go to sleep. Since it’s gotten into my system I haven’t fallen asleep once.

gnushoes · 30/01/2021 16:53

It may have improved my libido 😉

whatswithtodaytoday · 30/01/2021 16:54

Yes, definitely. I notice if I forget to take it for a few days, my mood really drops. I've always been prone to SAD in winter but haven't been too bad this year, despite it being the worst winter ever... I suspect because I'm taking 3000iu Vitamin D a day. I started for Covid but will definitely continue until late spring.

Groovee · 30/01/2021 16:55

I started taking it last year along with some other vitamins and I can definitely see a difference.

dragonsmoke · 30/01/2021 17:10

I've noticed that my mood and energy levels have improved also with vit D. I never took it before COVID.

boobybum · 30/01/2021 18:11

Just wanted to say that places other than Amazon stock it. Holland & Barrett have the sprays on buy one get one half price at the moment.

LetItGoGo · 30/01/2021 18:13

It's helped my SAD in the past.

newtb · 30/01/2021 18:24

VitD is necessary for proper thyroid function. I have drops every day as well as iodothyronine.

QueenPawPaws · 30/01/2021 18:32

I have hashimotos and just had bloods back today
Massively vitamin d deficient, and I already take a multi vitamin plus a vit d and k2 spray Confused

Catwoman76 · 30/01/2021 18:44

Hi. My wife and I took vitamin D tablets and both were constipated after a few days of taking.
Anyone else suffered constipation as a side effect?

TattiePants · 30/01/2021 19:06

For those asking for recommendations, I've been using the better you Vit D 3000iu + K spray. I've just ordered more from Boots as they're currently 3 for 2 but H&B often do the same offer.

Tulipsinmyvase · 30/01/2021 19:06

I take 4000iu daily and have done for over 6 months. No SAD this winter, it has definitely improved my overall mood and wellbeing.

IceDiscoSkater · 30/01/2021 19:21

Great to hear everyone’s experiences

Not noticed that with me.
goose1964 · 30/01/2021 19:50

I feel brighter when I take it.

Jenjenn · 30/01/2021 20:10

I just said to dh yesterday that I think vitamin D might have an effect on my moods! I have been taking max safe dose 4000 iu and my pms mood dip was not as bad as usual. Also yy to noticing constipation. I now take the vitamins and follow up with a handful of prunes.

DobbleDobble · 30/01/2021 21:10

You should take magnesium alongside vitamin d as it helps ur body absorb it better.I had advice from a kind OP when I posted on this 2 years ago.
If you google it...

Lululu22 · 31/01/2021 23:34

@DobbleDobble, just picking up on the magnesium. What form are you taking, how much and is it spread throughout the day? I ask because I’ve been looking into all this and an old MN thread somewhere had a poster mention a fb group which I joined and their big thing is taking Vitamin D with co-factors - namely magnesium, Vitamin K and something else I can’t recall the name off. I’ve been looking at calcium supplements due to family history of osteoporosis but, from that fb group, have the impression that with the correct Vit D, magnesium, Vit K etc then calcium supplements aren’t necessary as the above will make sure calcium is released to where it should get to, ie the bones. As you’ve probably guessed from my ramblings I’m going round in circles trying to get accurate information on the whole thing!

To answer the original question, I was desperately run down a few years ago and took Vit d spray 3000, B12 spray and some form of magnesium - felt great after a few weeks.
