Does Vitamin D improve your mood ?

Since October I’ve been taking extra Daily Vitamin D tablets on top of my daily multi vitamin and I feel like my mood and outlook has really improved.

I originally started taking them for the Covid boost that I kept reading about , that it would help immune system and read people with higher levels of Vit D coped better with Covid.

Now I don’t know if it’s just coincidence but I’ve been feeling really good , upbeat , organised , not so tired just really level and calm.

This is even with lockdown and DC at home , all of which is obviously utterly crap but I don’t feel like it’s dragging me down.

I don’t know if it’s the Vitamin D but it’s the only thing I’ve added or changed to my life

( already normal BMI , healthy , go outdoors daily no matter the weather etc )

I tried to look it up online but can’t find any information on vitamin D affecting mind only body

Yes! I started taking 2500iu when i got Covid end of Dec, definitely improved my mood.

Revelation reading a poster's comment about period pains - my last period i had no pain at all, for the first time Ever (am 49) so much so that I panicked that it was abnormal bleeding to start with! Wow. Why does it have that impact?!

QueenPawPaws · 01/02/2021 00:49

Really hope it helps my periods! I pick up my prescription tomorrow, think it's 20,000 twice a week for a month then more blood tests

TrickyD · 01/02/2021 00:58

I met a GP on holiday who fervently believed in the efficacy of Vit D, and told me that she gets all her patients tested for deficiency.
I asked my own GP about this and he said probably an excellent idea but far too expensive.

Yes! I was thinking today, that I'm feeling brighter and more energetic. I've been grumpy for months.

DobbleDobble · 01/02/2021 05:50

@Lululu22 I take a magnesium sterate//oxide tablet , once a day of 375mg.After researching it seemed to be a correct amount.I actually just buy Tesco own brand of it now, after paying lots for different ones!

I did find that until I started taking magnesium with my prescribed vit d tablet , the vit d on its own made me feel a bit unwell.I can’t recall how because it was 3 years ago and my levels last August were fine. Now I just take a 500mg tablet every other day.
I was surprised when I got diagnosed as I work outside all year and we had had a brilliant summer that year too!! But I wear uniform and obviously use sun cream where I can too.
Once I had cracked getting the tablet balance right , it did help through that years winter, I suffer from SAD.
Daily I now take vitamin c, B12,D -mannose, iron every other day , vit d every other day and magnesium with the vit d.
My SAD is not too bad this year even with lockdown etc so something must be working ! Finally I would be careful with taking calcium separately as vit d can make calcium deposits if not balanced with magnesium, but you would need to research that as I can’t recall the specifics.HTH

speakout · 01/02/2021 06:07

I have been thinking the same just this week OP.
It's the first winter I have been taking vitamin D daily- 4000 units in a spray since October. My mood is generally much better, I feel calmer and more optimistic.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/02/2021 07:09

Hasn't worked for me. I'm finding this winter even more miserable the usual.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/02/2021 07:11

Although having RTFT I'm now wondering if my dosage needs to be much higher.

Frownette · 01/02/2021 07:17

I think you're supposed to take K2 alongside D3 if you may not get enough animal proteins in your diet?

Only thing I have heard about D3 was anecdotal, I complimented someone on their charity work and he said he couldn't get out of bed for a while and his doctor thought it was depression, until he was tested for a vitamin D deficiency and he felt miles better after supplements. This is only one conversation though!

DobbleDobble · 01/02/2021 08:10

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal you do need to be on minimum of 1500mg a day as a maintenance dose, if you are deficient it could be a lot higher, when I was diagnosed by GP, I needed a 20,000 dose per day !! , saying that as stated I now only take a 400mg dose a day as I found even a 1000mg dose made me feel unwell.
Have a look at your dosage and try 1500mg per day, alongside 300mg magnesium, but you will have to give it at least 4 weeks to see an improvement.

macshoto · 01/02/2021 08:17

It certainly does for my DW. She takes a Vit D supplement in quite large dose and it makes a world of difference. She clearly suffers with SAD - and Vit D is the difference between a happy relationship and her threatening divorce in Jan/Feb!

Kndg · 01/02/2021 08:22

I had my Vit D levels tested and I was severely deficient, think my levels were 24.
I've been taking 4000iu ever since. It's important to take Vit K2 alongside it to prevent arterial buildup of calcium.

anxiouswaiting · 01/02/2021 08:29

It does help mood. My husband had terrible back pain which he ended up seeing a neurologist for. His vitamin D was rock bottom, they said that was very likely the reason for his pain, low mood and pins and needles in his leg. He had very high dose vitamin D prescription for a month and improved hugely. Think he is low again now as symptoms are coming back (he is terrible for taking meds and hasn't been taking the multivitamins or vitamin d tablets I got him!)

Lululu22 · 01/02/2021 10:00

@DobbleDobble, thank you. That's both useful and interesting. Great that you have found the right balance to make a difference.

Yes, I need to keep researching re the calcium which leads me to as @Kndg what dose of K2 you take alongside the D? I can see a combined D3 and K2 capsule on Amazon but maybe they would be better separate.

@Sunshineonarainydayy

"It also got rid of the period pains that had blighted my life for 20+ years."

Wow I'd never made the connection but think this must be the same for me. Last few months have finally been pain free after decades of pain but I couldn't think why.

Oh my goodness this is me too but I only realised after reading your post!

Started taking it nearly 2 weeks ago and for the first time ever I haven't had period pains! My PP use to be so painful too.

I have been really down too but I've been ok the last few days and even managed going for a power walk. Wonder if that's the vitamin D too.

TheSandman · 01/02/2021 10:10

I suffered from Seasonal Adjustment Disorder which once lead to a severe depression - SAD is not uncommon in Scotland where the daylight gets short in winter - especially if you live on the northern side of a bloody big mountain which blocks out the sun for great periods of the day like I do. The first thing the doctor did when I went to see her was recommend I up my intake of Vit D (normally made in the skin exposed to sunlight). I haven't had a depression since. Even through this fucking awful pandemic my mood has stayed relatively upbeat.

QueenPawPaws · 01/02/2021 15:02

My level has come back as 9 BlushBlushBlush
Guess that's why I feel tired...

OhWhyNot · 01/02/2021 15:07

I was vitamin d deficient started taking it (doctor recommended a single tablet rather than a multi vitamin I also take an iron tablet and B12)

Certainly less tired and feel better for this and my mood is better

I am finding I’m a little constipated I put that down to the iron tablets

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 01/02/2021 15:18

I notice an improvement in energy levels and it really helps to control my psoriasis.

A friend of mine had a psychotic episode last year and had to be admitted to a psych hospital. She was very very poorly, but there was no history of poor MH, no obvious triggers or traumas. It turned out that she had incredibly low levels of vitamin D. It is precious stuff.

CleverCatty · 01/02/2021 15:27

@tinierclanger

Wow good question, I started taking it last autumn and actually I have been a lot more positive these past few months but I never connected the two. Maybe it does?!
Actually I think I'm the same - have taken it approximately for past 2-3 years and yes have noticed I'm less down and more positive - not amazingly so but compared to in the past much more so.

I wish there was more research into lack of Vit D because I'd have taken it years ago otherwise.

NymphInYellow · 01/02/2021 15:30

It's funny that I found this thread an hour after taking my first Vitamin D! I bought them because of Covid, but if they help with my mood and period pains too, I'll be so happy

OhWhyNot · 01/02/2021 15:38

Yes my hair is better and skin (less dry), not hungry all the time or rather not craving carbs and sugar as I’m not so tired

Embroideredstars · 01/02/2021 16:33

Vitamin d deficiency is associated with low mood.

EverythingsComingUpRoses · 01/02/2021 16:55

My DD's periods and acne have both improved dramatically since taking vit D

IceDiscoSkater · 01/02/2021 19:23

Where did you get your levels tested ?
