Anyone bought a new boiler in the last year or two?

Can I ask your opinions please?

Our boiler is on the way out, 15 years old and makes a shocking noise whenever it's turned in.

Had it serviced a year ago which sorted it for a little bit, but the noise is back even worse!

So do we go with a well now company such as Brisitsh gas, more expensive but comes with all warranties and 24/7 call centre etc.

Or a more local company that’s £700 cheaper? But has good trust pilot reviews?

Sorry £500 cheaper

Well, I have a brilliant plumber who gave me a couple of options for the boiler itself with price. Went with more expensive Worcester. He reckoned Ideal were pretty good these days too. Not sure what benefit of British gas is. If I need my plumber, I just ring him .

All new boilers have warranty?

monkeymaya · 29/01/2021 21:49

Hi
As long as it’s installed by a qualified tradesman, has a good warranty scheme & you get gas safety certificate, you will be fine. My plumber is recommending ideal boiler as well, and his next suggestion is worcester Bosch which is a few hundred more

look up the reviews on ideal, as I read that the customer service afterwards, should you breakdown, is not good
But WB has good customer service

The quote we have includes that Worcester boiler so that is good to know it's recommended.

Can't really see the benefit of British Gas?

Another Worcester Bosch installation here, recommended by a local tradesman. We got three estimates from local companies (but didn't bother with British Gas) All had good reviews and the estimates were very similar.

WisestIsShe · 29/01/2021 22:07

We got a plumber friend to fit ours, a baxi. When DM needed her's doing she used boxt and the service was perfect. She chose a Wooster but they have a selection. In your situation I'd go for the local company.

WisestIsShe · 29/01/2021 22:07

*Worcester!

idontlikealdi · 29/01/2021 22:09

Local guy for us, because BG couldn't come for something ridiculous like eight weeks. He didn't push WN we went with an Ideal in the end and it's been brilliant. It was in the beast from the east winter so we really needed a boiler.

I think names like BG and WB are pushed about too much!

LIZS · 29/01/2021 22:11

BG throw in a homecare policy. Does your quote include hive or equivalent. We paid c3k interest free over 2 years.

cabbageking · 29/01/2021 22:21

Had a new boiler fitted Dec 2019. £2200 from local provider and took all the old bits and pieces to the scrap man and got @£140.00 back.
Use a gas registered one. British Gas was a lot more for nothing extra in my view.

Fuss · 29/01/2021 22:50

Have you looked at the likes of Warmzilla and Boxt? They were cheaper than BG for what we wanted.
We went with Warmzilla in the ended who fitted it within 2 days of ordering, great job, would never have known they had been in the house.

We went for some Worcester one because dh liked that it was shiny....

Fuss · 29/01/2021 22:53

To add, we chose Warmzilla over Boxt only because the guarantee for the same boiler was 10 years as opposed to 7 with Boxt.

I've had issues with BG cover in the old house a few years ago when they tried to tell us something wasn't covered because the system was furred up or some such like. What they didn't bank on was dh worked in an industry with plumbers at that time and sent a sample of the water, proving what we knew all along that it was an excuse not to pay out.
Never trusted them again.

Hopeandglory · 29/01/2021 23:27

we had a local well recommended plumber install a new worchester combi boiler, he recommended a cheaper make that had a longer guarentee but DH preferred the more expensive branded product!!
Still shocked over a year later how hot the hot water is now as we only used to have hand hot water before.

jackstini · 29/01/2021 23:34

Wouldn't bother with BG installation, it's £100s more for no good reason

As long as it's fitted by a gas safe engineer it's fine

Depends on house size for boiler, we have a Worcester in ours and Ideal ones in most of our (smaller) rental properties

dalrympy · 30/01/2021 12:09

BOXT have been decent for me. They have come out twice in the year since when there have been issues

GeidiPrimes · 30/01/2021 12:14

I have a Worcester installed by a local gas-safe tradesman - one of the quotes I received (exactly same boiler) was almost double what I ended up paying. They vary hugely.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 30/01/2021 12:19

The only reason we went with BG was for the 'free' insurance and Home are policy plus the additional system checks. We had just bought our house and relied on both insurance and Homecare policy almost immediately.

Now we use a local Gas Safe engineer.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 30/01/2021 12:21

I had a new boiler fitted in November last year. It's an Ideal. Local plumber did the job. I'm very happy with it as we have changed from an old tank system to a combi. It connected up to my Hive system no problems.

Frollocks · 30/01/2021 12:30

We had ours replaced 18 months ago, plumber recommended by the builder who installed our kitchen.
About £1200 cheaper than BG, also went from old storage tank system to condensing boiler, Baxi. Comes with 7 year warranty, parts labour.
Plumber also services it, £60 a time.

Fallulah · 30/01/2021 12:45

I used Boxt. Their quotation was c£800 less than the local installers, I had a discount code and I was able to choose the date to get my very old boiler and completely scaled up cylinder replaced two days before Christmas when local companies were saying they had no availability. One guy did it all in a day and then the electrician came and certified it.

I thought there would be all sorts of issues as my boiler was 30 years old and they even had to do brickwork because of the changed shape of the flu, but can’t fault them.

Nochristmasbreak · 31/01/2021 13:33

Thanks all, really helpful.

CrustyCrabbe · 31/01/2021 13:35

We had a Glowworm fitted in 2017. We have it serviced annually. It’s been absolutely fab - fitted by a recommended local firm

Onedropbeat · 31/01/2021 13:36

I used boxt and would recommend them to anyone

I’d previously been scammed by a local ‘plumber’ so put me off using someone that could be so unaccountable

lobsterkiller · 31/01/2021 13:40

I've just had an ideal logic max installed with my local gas man. It comes with a ten year warranty too. Very impressed. Boiler was approx £1250.

percheron67 · 31/01/2021 13:40

British Gas fitted my new Worcester boiler in November. After years of living in an old (and cold) house in Winter, I have a cosy house. Found them to be helpful and on time. Thoroughly recommend.
