Maths Question

I know the answer. My brother, with his Master's in Maths, has confirmed my alternative answer (well DDs answer!) Is also correct. But I'm intrigued to know what everyone else gets...
It's Yr5 White Rose Maths Equivalent Fractions.

Assuming the question is 'what is C?' I'd say the answer was 24

DeeThree · 29/01/2021 11:18

If question is what value is C, I get 24

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/01/2021 11:19

Yes, it's find C.

Another vote for 24.

emmathedilemma · 29/01/2021 11:23

Also agree that C = 24
A = 6 3/6 = 1/2
B = 7 7/14 = 1/2
C = 24 12/24 = 1/2

canterburycat · 29/01/2021 11:24

We had this yesterday and got 28 which I'm pretty sure is an alternative correct answer

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/01/2021 11:26

C= 24 is the answer DD got.
The official correct answer is 28. Which also works is you consider A to be 7 and B to be 6.

Fifthtimelucky · 29/01/2021 12:04

I have no idea how you are officially supposed to work out something like this, but the 24 solution is very easily done in one's head, whereas (at least for me) the 28 solution isn't!

idontlikealdi · 29/01/2021 12:06

I get 28

MaidofKent78 · 29/01/2021 12:06

28 or 24. Either are correct.

MaidofKent78 · 29/01/2021 12:07

A and B are 6 and 7 but there's no restriction on which is which.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 29/01/2021 12:09

You've written out the question, how does it appear in the original?

Without any other info I think most people would assume A = 6 just because the maths is easier

LochJessMonster · 29/01/2021 12:18

A-7
B-6
C-28

greensnail · 29/01/2021 12:38

My first answer would be 28 as that's jumps out more easily to me, but either answer is ready enough to find.

DeeThree · 29/01/2021 13:41

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

C= 24 is the answer DD got. The official correct answer is 28. Which also works is you consider A to be 7 and B to be 6.
Why is the "official" answer 28? Without guidance (e.g. A > B) it could be either. As I knew a and b = 6 and 7, my logic kept the same formation first letter = first number. Nothing to say it must be 28.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/01/2021 13:43

@DeeThree official as in the answer provided by White Rose.

I have occasionally found with WR resources and questions like this there is another answer not listed. In one test I noticed a number of children had out the same wrong answer...when 2 of my most able children wrote that I thought ‘hmmmm’ and investigated and low and behold there was a possible second answer.

If you email or tweet them they’ll probably update the answer sheet!

modgepodge · 29/01/2021 13:49

Oh and 24 is the answer I got first too, assuming the fractions are equivalent to a half makes it easier.

LockdownTeacherCrush · 29/01/2021 13:51

C is either 24 or 28 and without further information both are equally valid answers.

HappyFlamingo · 29/01/2021 13:52

I agree, A can be 6 or 7 (and B is the other one) hence the two possible answers for C.

HappyFlamingo · 29/01/2021 13:54

You can work it out "properly" (rather than just looking at it) by using a quadratic equation, which always gives two solutions as there's a +/- in the quadratic formula. I'm sure that's not what they're expecting a year 5 to do though!

freakdechic · 29/01/2021 13:58

C = 28

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 29/01/2021 14:00

24 was my immediate answer.

It would be interesting to know what first seeing 24 or 28 means. What connects those people.

Dementedswan · 29/01/2021 14:03

C = 28
I've spent the last 2 days doing equivalent fractions with my dc and thats the answer we all got.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/01/2021 14:07

My theory of 24vs 28 is maybe it's the first way the individual attempts it. DD had worked out the various solutions for A+B =13, and was trying them in turn.
