I know the answer. My brother, with his Master's in Maths, has confirmed my alternative answer (well DDs answer!) Is also correct. But I'm intrigued to know what everyone else gets...
It's Yr5 White Rose Maths Equivalent Fractions.

Thats's the most logical answer to me, springs out immediately.

I think 28 is perhaps the expected answer if they assume that children will use logic of factors to help. The 14 is the only number on the bottom, and suggests that they must have had to multiply the first denominator by something to get that - ie factors of 14, so 2 or 7. So 7 works, and then it's easy to show that they get 6 for the numerator of the second fraction, which does make 13. Then they can use x4 to work out the final one and get C. Of course it isn't the only solution, but it might be the likely way they want the children to approach it, rather than random trial and error.
Given it's WR, I think it's more likely they worked out the answer and didn't realise there was a second correct answer. They're usually good at correcting this if you tweet them.

I got 24 in a similar way to noble by figuring A and B were 6 and 7. But then realising that 3/6 and 7/14 were both equivalent to 1/2 without really thinking too much about it.

@PurpleDaisies

DS2 (year 9 and used to be so good at maths he could practically do it in his sleep) said c=18. Which makes no sense.

What was their strategy/reasoning?

He had A and B as 9 and 4. I asked him how that balanced the equations and he said he didn't know and didn't realise they were meant to Hmm. Then told me he's finished school for the week Grin

I guess a totally appropriate answer for a Friday afternoon! Grin

Exactly! He's done a week of home learning. Its chill time now. Which mainly involves video calling his friends whilst playing games and shrieking "what bruv" every 5 seconds Hmm

Oh god. I hope you’ve got a suitable distraction for yourself. I’d be breaking out the dairy milk.
WeLovePeaSoup · 29/01/2021 17:24

DD year 5 said it’s 28. I don’t have a clue 😊

Possibly!

Though despite their flaws, I actually quite like WR for the methods they use and the visual approach. It's not always clear what you are supposed to do in some questions, and they go from very easy to quite hard in a short space of time, but there is a good variety of question types on the same topic. Many people just do the worksheets without any video explanation though. I'm not sure they are the best for home learning work, necessarily! If there were teaching worksheets with explanations for pupils/parents to read as well, it might be better, but I suppose the amount of printing is already quite enough for many people!

It wasn't meant as a criticism, I like them, but if there is meant to be more than one answer they usually say in the question. And I have seen this happen with a couple of other questions.
