How long do cats live for?

OP posts:
Seeline · 28/01/2021 13:42

Depends - my Granny's was 22

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 28/01/2021 13:44

Ours is about 17.

minipie · 28/01/2021 13:47

I think somewhere between 15-20 is usual.

Unless they have an accident.

Out of my last 3 cats, one was 21, next was 19 and the current one is about 18, but not sure as she was a rescue when we got her 9 yrs ago.

SweetLathyrus · 28/01/2021 14:38

If a cat makes it past 4 years, they are likely to live into their late teens or early twenties with good care and nutrition. There is a very high mortality rate before 4 from accidents, but after that a cat is savvy to their environment, and most moggies are pretty healthy.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 28/01/2021 14:42

I'd say between 15 and 20 is the norm barring road accidents etc.

Murinae · 28/01/2021 14:57

Ours have all lived till late teens

My husbands cat have lived for 19 years.
Backupthebus · 28/01/2021 15:06

Ours lived to 19, beautiful boy he was. He grew up with the children.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/01/2021 15:08

Assuming no accidents or illnesses, about 17 - 18 I think is the norm.

Sadly our last 3 cats have all died from (different) illnesses at much younger ages Sad

Our oldest ever cat was pts at about 18 because her QOL was so poor and she developed epilepsy which was horrible fir her. She also had a form of dementia.

Our current cats are 8 and 6. They were rescue cats 4 years ago and we knew when we took them that we were making a commitment of 15 + years.

My cat died aged 16 yesterday. Everything went wrong at the end, she got meningitis, missed by me initially then misdiagnosed by the vet until it was too late.I feel terrible guilt as I loved her so much. so many years were lost that she couyld have lived.

Mine is only 8 and probably won't last the year due to cancer ☹

jt56 · 28/01/2021 17:08

What illnesses did your cats get EmmaGrundyforPM

Sorry for your loss :( They take up such a big space in our hearts dont they?
I lost one of mine a year ago at 19, but my other cat only made it to 12.
I've just taken on a stray and have no idea how old he is!

Ilovelove · 28/01/2021 17:12

Two were run over and so not very old
My cat that lived until his natural end was 13

Gogglebox20 · 28/01/2021 17:12

At the moment I have two adult cats 20 years and 16 years, both moggies and had them from being kittens, both outdoor cats. I also have two maine coon kittens approx 4 months and these are indoor cats. I have lost two other cats one at age 9 due to poisoning and one at age 5 due to being hit by a car.

Vinorosso74 · 28/01/2021 17:49

Average life expectancy is about 15-16. Some make it past 20. Certain pedigrees may have a shorter life expectancy.

Vinorosso74 · 28/01/2021 17:50

I posted too soon. So sorry for your loss Flowers It's truly awful when they go.

She did really well to get to 16 💐💐. I’ve had 14 cats over a 45 year period...... none lived past 17.
LApprentiSorcier · 28/01/2021 17:55

I've had one live to 15 and one to 19 - the younger one died of a tumour, the older one of kidney and thyroid disease.

Chimeraforce · 28/01/2021 17:59

Ours died of a cancerous lump in her abdomen about 8. Gutting. She was fab. Had her annual vet check February, stopped eating in May. Took her to the vet who found a large lump. Dead 2 weeks later. 😭😭😭

LadyLindaT · 28/01/2021 17:59

Un-neutered cats tend to live short, violent lives.
My last, beloved cat lived to 25.

cobblers123 · 28/01/2021 17:59

Five previous cats were PTS at 10, 2 at 16, 17 and 18. All had from kittens.

Not sure of current cat's age as he was a rescue but I am thinking he is maybe 11 ish now as I have had him 7 years.

I am assuming I probably have another 5-7 years at least.

jt56 · 28/01/2021 18:13

Thanks you for your comforting message maddiemookins16mum. I am sorry for your losses of your beloved pets. x
