No sorry. What about eben if you want something different

Impatiens · 27/01/2021 23:34

Loathe. Sorry!

partyatthepalace · 27/01/2021 23:35

I’d here it as Ellen. So I wouldn’t

partyatthepalace · 27/01/2021 23:35

Hear...

pumpkinsoups · 27/01/2021 23:37

The toilet we use for camping is an Elsan so I don't like it because it's too close to that.

wlv12 · 27/01/2021 23:37

No, it just looks like Ethan (which is a fine name, but confusing when your name isn’t Ethan!)

Davros · 28/01/2021 00:01

Too like Alan. Don't like it

Anystarinthesky · 28/01/2021 00:05

No, but I like Ethan though.

What are your husband's choices of names?

LadyJaye · 28/01/2021 00:06

Ilhan (pron. Eel-hon) is quite a common Muslim boy's name, and apparently Elhan is a variant spelling.

I went to school with a really nice guy called Ilhan, who was of second generation Pakistani heritage.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about it being used in a white middle class family setting, but I have also known non-Jewish people called Rachel and Jacob, so maybe that's just me.

alexdgr8 · 28/01/2021 00:10

No.
never heard of it. don't like it. sounds like hell.
he will have a lifetime of explaining/correcting. tedious.
pick a proper name.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 28/01/2021 00:10

I looked at it and presumed it was pronounced ‘Ellen’.

So it would be a ‘no’ from me.

Workyticket · 28/01/2021 00:17

I taught a Turkish boy called Elham a few years ago. I probably wouldn't use if it i wasn't Turkish

Porridgeoat · 28/01/2021 00:24

Awful sorry.

Ethan is far better. What names does your DH like?

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 28/01/2021 02:12

Nope , too much like Ellen also major factor your husband doesn’t like it .

MossandRoy · 28/01/2021 02:27

I thought Elsan too! Like chemical toilet. It's a no from me. My name was forever misspelled and it really gets boring having to correct people.

LadyDique · 28/01/2021 02:29

Anytime someone sees it written he'll be called Ethan. A lifetime of corrections.

TheOneLeggedJockey · 28/01/2021 02:39

No. In the immortal words of Marian Keyes, it feels ‘cobbled together’. Made up. Yoonee’que.

Everyone will pronounce Eh-lan, and within a remarkably short amount of time, that will annoy the living daylights out of you.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/01/2021 03:04

If you're not pronouncing it like Ellen, I can't think how you would pronounce it.

Arobase · 28/01/2021 03:42

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

If you're not pronouncing it like Ellen, I can't think how you would pronounce it.
I assume OP means Ee-len. Except that not one looking at that spelling would pronounce it that way: it's inevitably going to be Ellen, El-han, Alan, or Ethan.

It also makes me think of toilets, presumably because of the similarity to Elsan.

Lindy2 · 28/01/2021 04:31

I knew a Turkish boy called Elvan.

That's similar sounding but without the Ethan/Ellen confusion. Elhan just doesn't really work in my opinion.

LizFlowers · 28/01/2021 04:32

That's what I thought. I've never heard the name before.

It's an Islamic name, are you Muslim? If so I think it is very appropriate and charming. It means:
"Elhan is an indirect Quranic name for boys and girls that means to eloquently state something, to say something beautifully, to have a beautiful voice, and to read Quran in a beautiful voice."

If you not Muslim I think it is highly inappropriate!

theThreeofWeevils · 28/01/2021 04:34

It's a lousy choice of name, as many PPs have indicated.
Eli?

M0rT · 28/01/2021 05:14

If your DH won't put the work in to look at names then call your child whatever you want.
Your not his staff.
What about Adam, Adnan, Enda, Eli, Aaron, Alan, Ultan?

MinnieMountain · 28/01/2021 06:03

Unless you’re from that culture, I’d think it very odd.

Rockbird · 28/01/2021 06:39

Have any of you been into an English (assuming England OP?) school lately (covid excepting obvs!)? Our registers are full of all sorts of names from all sorts of backgrounds. Elhan isn't going to trouble anyone these days.

I don't love it but the spelling or pronunciation isn't an issue.
