Hi
Myself and husband are trying to pick a boys name but cannot agree on the name Elhan which I adore and is my only choice.
I'm due in 3 days, Can I have everyones honest opinion do you love it or hate it?
I won't be offended 😜

It's basically Ethan but replacing the t with an l. It's definently not pronounced as Ellen. Would it be a yes or no? I'm so curious to know other peoples opinions for I loved it when I first heard of the name a few months ago. Hubby prefers very tradional names, we're on totally different paths 🙈 But if the poll is knocking it on the head, I'll forget about it and roll with a standard name 😏

It’s not fair to your husband to have an “only choice” that he isn’t keen on. I’m sure you could find some more choices if you open your mind.

Luckingfovely · 27/01/2021 22:59

It will mean a lifetime of confusion, please don't saddle the poor child with this non-name.

Happynewtier · 27/01/2021 23:00

Looks like Ethan misplelt, sounds like Ellen misassigned.

CheshireCats · 27/01/2021 23:01

First thought- a typo for Ethan. Second thought he will spend his whole life repeating it(repeatedly) and correcting miss spellings and pronunciations.
Why would you even do this to your child?

Leeds2 · 27/01/2021 23:01

I wouldn't choose it, no.

And I read it as Ethan in the title.

ODFOx · 27/01/2021 23:02

You keep saying it's pronounced Elan but then you say it is almost the same as Elon Musk.
Elan is pronounced elLann. It means Energy, style or enthusiasm. 'She performed with elan is if it were an every day occurrence for her'.

Your spelling and pronunciation are certainly original, but if the word has no significance for you then, given it has no etymology or known pronunciation, I wouldn't do it to your child.
Alan is a well known name but vanishingly unusual for children. Have you considered it?

Luckyelephant1 · 27/01/2021 23:04

Why the need for the h in it then if its not cultural and isn't pronounced? Can't it just be Elan? I still don't love it but at least less chance of being mispronounced. Looks less like Ellen or Ethan without the t crossed that way as well.

Claramam · 27/01/2021 23:05

Hi no the spelling was quite unique which was what I liked about it. It's actually a Muslim name. Its pronounced almost the same as Ethan but dropping the "t" for an "L". How does that sound?

Lucy830 · 27/01/2021 23:06

I thought it was a typo for Ethan.

I don’t hate it but I do feel like it’s sounds like you liked the name Ellen for a girl and then jazzed it up to sound more masculine.

littlemisslozza · 27/01/2021 23:06

You're forgetting that every new person who sees the name before hearing the pronunciation will probably need correcting. If I saw that on my register I'd be unsure how to say and it the poor boy would be doing that on a regular basis through his life.

Milomonster · 27/01/2021 23:06

I thought it was Arabic with the h as in El-Han. If it’s a Hebrew name, then Ilan. I thinks Elhan is a very awkward name.

chillied · 27/01/2021 23:08

It's a no. As most people have said.

Back to the drawing board until you find a name that both you and your DH like. I sympathise, we found it difficult too. DS doesn't have my favourite name OR DH's favourite name. In the end there was only 1 name in the whole book of names that was in the crossover of the Venn diagram of names we both like. But it's stood the test of time and was a good choice that I still really like.

YouWontBelieveYourEyes · 27/01/2021 23:11

No, it’s like Ethan spelled wrong. And if your husband doesn’t like it you can’t use it. You both have to agree.

Whatwouldnanado · 27/01/2021 23:12

Please don't for all the reasons given above.

Claphands · 27/01/2021 23:13

I like it. Will be difficult for people to know how to pronounce though but I wouldn’t let that necessarily put me off.

Claramam · 27/01/2021 23:13

I'm not going to lie, I wouldn't name the baby Elhan without his final say. I suppose in some way Im hoping that he would change his mind. I've been researching names for months now, in hope we could agree on one and none he's liked so far!! He looked at names for all of 5 minutes and I couldn't really settle on any he liked. It's got so close now that I guess we will have to sit down again and see what's out there.

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 27/01/2021 23:14

I don’t like it at all.

Edgeoftheledge · 27/01/2021 23:14

Sounds female

NoWordForFluffy · 27/01/2021 23:14

Nobody is changing their minds and saying yes. You might as well stop asking!

You have to agree on a name, so it's pointless asking randoms if we like it (even though the consensus is no).

Ginfordinner · 27/01/2021 23:15

I bet teachers sigh when they see creative spellings. Konner anyone?

NoWordForFluffy · 27/01/2021 23:15

We went through the entire ONS spreadsheet of baby names from the year before to get DS' name. Have you done that?

AradiaGC · 27/01/2021 23:17

I also read it as Ethan initially. Elhan I'd pronounce like Ilhan but with an 'eh' sound at the beginning. El-han, not eh-lan or ee-lan. I'd assume it was Arabic or from a similar language/culture.

If you're not going to pronounce the h, don't put it in! Alan or Elon might be a better choice in that case.

cbt944 · 27/01/2021 23:25

Elhan is heinous.

A lifetime of the poor blighter having to correct people's pronunciation and spelling it out, over and over.

littlemisslozza · 27/01/2021 23:29

@Ginfordinner yes! Poor kids. Once taught a sweet girl called Mercedes, except it was spelt Madzadzes. How they got that spelling I'll never guess.
