Funny/poncy pronunciations of places: things

I watched a comedy bit once (that I now can't find) where it was talking about wanky pronunciations of places etc

Batterceya for battersea
claham instead of Clapham
St Ockwell
And they said what next?
Vauzall in stead of Vauxhall 😂

I had a posh friend who would play down shopping at the big shop in Knightsbridge (back in 80s) by calling it HA rods

What others do you know of??

St Reatham (Streatham)
Ponge (Penge with a French accent)

Vinorosso74 · 26/01/2021 21:53

Years back DP worked with someone from South Africa, he was moving and DP asked him where and he replied High Barnay. DP was puzzled then realised he meant High Barnet. That was a genuine mistake but makes me smile.

orchidsonabudget · 26/01/2021 21:57

Haha Barnay.
I am sure there are others. I can't think of any. Bit like Hyacinth Bouquet

My mum says Vorks Hall for Vauxhall (the place and the cars). She won't be told.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/01/2021 21:59

Edin- burg instead of Edin-borough

Loo ess ham for Lewisham

Firebird83 · 26/01/2021 23:12

I know someone who calls Lidl “lye-dells”

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/01/2021 23:25

I had a friend who used to live in ClapAHM.. But that was before any of it got gentrified and expensive - it was a sort of anti-joke.,

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/01/2021 23:54

I think half of all Americans refer to Target as Tarjay, and the other half don't realise it's a joke...

orchidsonabudget · 28/01/2021 22:06

ROFL at Tarjay

underneaththeash · 28/01/2021 22:33

@Aroundtheworldin80moves how else would you pronounce Lewisham?

TheDogsMother · 28/01/2021 22:35

Vauxhall = Vau Cross Hall

evenBetter · 28/01/2021 22:37

Edinburgh isn’t pronounced ‘edin-borough’ though. It’s not ‘berg’ but it sure isn’t ‘borough’ either.

‘Lartay’ for latte
That awful lisping noise people make when trying to say chorizo in a fake Spanish accent. Embarrasses me to hear it 😁

shittestxmasever · 28/01/2021 22:38

@underneaththeash Lewie-shum

evenBetter · 28/01/2021 22:38

A place called Belvoir that locals pronounce as BEAVER, ffs.

ElizaLaLa · 28/01/2021 22:38

Looeysham

MossandRoy · 28/01/2021 22:38

I moved to Camberley from the North as was baffled by the elongated A sound the locals use to call it : Caaaaaaamberley.

beelzeboob · 28/01/2021 22:41

When a Brit says paella the Spanish way and not the English way
Payeya

Fuckingcrustybread · 28/01/2021 22:42

In my home town, there's an area named Splott , I've heard it referred to as Sploh

PillowSandwich · 28/01/2021 22:43

But they are making an attempt, however inept, to pronounce chorizo as it is pronounced in Spanish, rather than mispronouncing something specifically to sound pretentious. What would you prefer — chorittzo?
MossandRoy · 28/01/2021 22:49

Oh god, chorizo! My ex called it koritzo. I can only assume he did it to wind me up, nobody's that dim. He some strange affectations. Nobhead.

theworks · 28/01/2021 22:55

meecrowavay a la Nigella

MustardMitt · 28/01/2021 23:01

I did A level Spanish back in the dark ages before chorizo in shops was a thing. I absolutely HATE that the accepted pronunciation is choritzo. I try and avoid saying it so I don’t sound wanky Grin

TheDogsMother · 29/01/2021 02:25

You are right about Belvoir ..

The name "Belvoir" is a Norman import by the French-speaking conquerors, though the native Anglo-Saxon population was unable to pronounce such a foreign word, preferring to call it " Beaver Castle". Belvoir Castle is still pronounced "Beaver" -- despite its spelling

Gingaaarghpussy · 29/01/2021 02:44

Happisburgh = haysbruh
Hautbois = hobbis
Belaugh = byulee
My nanna - mange tout = mangee toot
Gazebo = gazebo
Everything in north norfolk is never pronounced how its spelt, whether its a place or a word.
