orchidsonabudget · 26/01/2021 20:09

I watched a comedy bit once (that I now can't find) where it was talking about wanky pronunciations of places etc

Batterceya for battersea
claham instead of Clapham
St Ockwell
And they said what next?
Vauzall in stead of Vauxhall 😂

I had a posh friend who would play down shopping at the big shop in Knightsbridge (back in 80s) by calling it HA rods

What others do you know of??

Cholmondley. - Chumley

JamesAnderson · 29/01/2021 03:31

@Gingaaarghpussy

Happisburgh = haysbruh Hautbois = hobbis Belaugh = byulee My nanna - mange tout = mangee toot Gazebo = gazebo Everything in north norfolk is never pronounced how its spelt, whether its a place or a word.
It's not just north Norfolk, it's Norfolk in general.

Wymondham - windam
Garboldisham - Garbolsham
Costessey - Cossy

36degrees · 29/01/2021 08:06

@Firebird83 my ILs pronounced it that way. And not as a joke. Now I can't stop reading Lidl as "lye-dells" in my head anytime I see it. Sometimes I think they opened one right across the road from us just to wind me up.

LutherRalph1 · 29/01/2021 08:10

Comedian Tom Allen talking on Soccer Am about going to watch Westham play really tickled me ( pronounced westum)

fantasmasgoria1 · 29/01/2021 08:12

The owner of a place I worked at years ago pronounced lidl as l - delles!

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/01/2021 08:12

Giorgio at Asdal. (A mash up of Italian and bristolian ).
Primani, for Primark.
.

Sheleg · 29/01/2021 08:12

Featherstoneshaugh - Fanshaw
St John - Sinjun
St Claire - Sinclair

YepCuntyIsTaken · 29/01/2021 08:18

SheaBu - shepherd bush Grin

DappledThings · 29/01/2021 08:29

@Optimist1

St Reatham (Streatham) Ponge (Penge with a French accent)
There is a shop in Penge that makes use of this joke called Penge Tout which I love.

We used to call Dunnes Stores Doonnez Boutique. Sort of a Spanish accent.

DappledThings · 29/01/2021 08:30

A lot of these examples are just people pronouncing things correctly or in their original language which isn't what OP was describing.

Scoobygang7 · 29/01/2021 08:37

@evenBetter

A place called Belvoir that locals pronounce as BEAVER, ffs.
@evenBetter are you in Leicester? Belvoir is pronounced Beaver that there. Really bloody confused me when I was living there. Not at all how it's spelt.
StillRowing · 29/01/2021 08:39

Sounds a bit like Lily Savage. She did the whole Vauxzal part along with having a clinic on Feb Rue de la South Lambert

shitinmyhandsandclap · 29/01/2021 08:42

I was just coming on to say lar-tay, even the servers do it our local Starbucks:

Me: A skinny latty please
Server: Skinny lar-tay coming up
Me: Grrr

shitinmyhandsandclap · 29/01/2021 08:45

I though Lidl was pronounced lie-dl officially, rather than Lid-ul, same as Ikea is Ick-e-ah rather than eye-key-ah, and Primark which is pree-mark rather than pry-mark.

Gubanc · 29/01/2021 08:52

This was a mistake but when I first came to London (non-native English speaker), I've asked someone for directions to Mary-le-bone in some kind of French accent.

shittestxmasever · 29/01/2021 09:03

Of course latte is lartay I can't even imagine it any other way?! Shock

LubaLuca · 29/01/2021 09:07

Lattay. It rhymes with pâté.

Bugslydoo · 29/01/2021 09:10

An aunt of mine always called co-op ‘quarp’
Drove me mad.
And pronounced primark as ‘pree-mark’

PillowSandwich · 29/01/2021 09:10

@shittestxmasever

Of course latte is lartay I can't even imagine it any other way?! Shock
No, it’s a shorter ‘a’ sound. Not like ‘lah-di-dah’.
Smudgeis13 · 29/01/2021 09:12

And the surname Marjoribanks is prounounced Marchbanks.

PattyPan · 29/01/2021 09:33

Oh dear, I pronounce Vauxhall as vorks-hall as well Blush
Lidl is lee-dl in German.
Beaulieu is bew-lee instead of bo-lee-uh as written

DialsMavis · 29/01/2021 09:39

I used to work with a woman who insisted that Isleworth (izelworth) near Hounslow was pronounced aisleworth as with the Isle of Wight. "um I think you will find it is Aisleworth actually", she lived nowhere near she jusy thought I was an imbecile and liked to loudly correct me at every turn

Vinorosso74 · 29/01/2021 09:45

There's a place near Blyth in Northumberland called Cowpen but it's pronounced coopun.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 29/01/2021 09:47

Try on Gateacre, Aigburth and Fazackerley from my home area...any attempts to poshify those are risible!
Gattaca, Egg-bth, Faz-ack-lee.

dementedma · 29/01/2021 09:51

My mother also calls the Co-op the quarp! She's from Lancashire.

Edinburgh is pronounced Edinbruh
