I watched a comedy bit once (that I now can't find) where it was talking about wanky pronunciations of places etc

Batterceya for battersea
claham instead of Clapham
St Ockwell
And they said what next?
Vauzall in stead of Vauxhall 😂

I had a posh friend who would play down shopping at the big shop in Knightsbridge (back in 80s) by calling it HA rods

What others do you know of??

Someone DH worked with was called mrs onions and added an apostrophe to make herself O'nions.

dementedma · 29/01/2021 09:53

My brother refers to Fazackerly as Faza Curly

Finfintytint · 29/01/2021 09:54

I get laughed at work when I pronounce Theydon Bois ( bwaah) as opposed to the accepted Boyz sound.

shittestxmasever · 29/01/2021 12:54

It makes me never want to speak again! Latte to rhyme with pate well I never.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/01/2021 13:13

St John - Sinjun

Dinesh and Sashi Kapoor - pronounced Denis and Charlotte Cooper.

Surjit and Veena Rabindranath - pronounced St John and Vanessa Robinson.

Grin

As well as O'Nions, I've also seen people called De'Ath and wondered....

MsJuniper · 29/01/2021 13:21

Dorry-toss for Doritos
Primarché for Primark
Clahm for Clapham

huggzy · 29/01/2021 13:27

I live near a place named Mildenhall, locals call it Minal, pronounced my-nall.

LadyPoison · 29/01/2021 13:34

I've heard Shepton Mallet pronounces as Shepton Mallay and Hatch Beauchamp catches a lot of non locals out

IceIceCoffee · 29/01/2021 13:41

@BobbinThreadbare123 I admittedly used to call it gate-acre before my husband corrected me. I moved here so that’s my defence I’m sticking to it

MrsExpo · 29/01/2021 13:49

I have friend who loves a certain Swedish furniture store. She refers to it as Icky-yah and not Ikea like everyone else.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/01/2021 13:50

My home town is called Keynsham and is pronounced Cane-shum.
Phil and Kirstie did an episode of Location Location Location here and not only did the producers misspell it as KeynEsham , Kirstie pronounced it Keener-sham. (The couple didn't buy the place, the woman cried and after the show bought a soulless newbuild in Bath).

dailybriefing · 29/01/2021 13:51

Twatley Manor which the owners pronounced Whatley and eventually changed the name to that but locals still call it the original Grin

She’s approximating the Swedish pronunciation.
Coislaoi · 29/01/2021 14:04

Do you know my MomSmile
She insists on pronouncing it Lidel and Alldees. It makes my ears bleed

kidsandmoggies · 29/01/2021 14:05

Torpenhow
Aspatria
Stanwix
Curthwaite
Gilcrux
Kirkby Stephen

I grew up in North Cumbria and I can assure you none of those are pronounced as they written.

Tra-pen-uh
Spay-tree
Stan-ix
Curf-ut
Gill(as in fish gills)-crooze
Kir-bee Stephen

Mamette · 29/01/2021 14:14

We used to call Dunnes Stores Doonnez Boutique. Sort of a Spanish accent.

😂 We always called it Du Nés Boutique
en Francais

highlandcoo · 29/01/2021 14:19

An American guy on the tube asked me

"Do you pronounce it Lie kes ter Square or Lie chester Square?"

Understandable mistake!

highlandcoo · 29/01/2021 14:21

Edinburgh is pronounced Edinbruh

I would say Edinburu

Edinbruh is a bit posher though

Sheleg · 29/01/2021 14:23

My Israeli husband, on seeing Fazackerley on a road sign, asked "What's Fazzacherelli", as if it was Italian!

impressivelycunty · 29/01/2021 14:25

I know someone who says Amazon with the emphasis on the "on" - apparently that's correct but it makes my teeth itch. And my MIL says Esha not Eesher (for Esher) and even though I used to fucking live there she still insists she's right. 😖

choosername1234 · 29/01/2021 14:26

@LubaLuca

My mum says Vorks Hall for Vauxhall (the place and the cars). She won't be told.
My mum does this too, she also won't be told Confused

Don’t worry! I say lartay too. Most a sounds are pronounced ‘ar’ in my area. I’d sound strange rhyming it with pâté.

Shock I assumed it was E-sher not Eeeesher!
PattyPan · 29/01/2021 14:33

IKEA is supposed to be pronounced ick-ay-uh not eye-key-uh. They pronounce it like that on adverts.

Nocar · 29/01/2021 14:33

Norwich, Norwitch.

Remember as a teenager adamantly asking for a train ticket to Norwitch, only to be sold a ticket to Noritch ? I didn't want to go there.
