Photocard driving licence expired.. a long time ago...

Posting here for traffic. NC.

My photocard driving licence expired in 2011. Since then I have changed name and address. I’ve tried to renew it before now but it’s just so complicated. Can’t do it online. Lost my marriage certificate to prove change of name. Depression makes everything harder to complete. Easier to hide away from everything. Had a shit few years.

So here I am trying to get on top of everything and sort my life out.

Now I am going to send all the stuff with the completed form to DVLA this week but I’m now panicking as I can’t find a straight answer online. Some sites say I can have my licence revoked! I am in full panic mode now.

Anyone have any experience of this?

I've just done mine which ran out about four years ago.

I had to change the address and photo.

Nothing was said.

Send it all off and wait for your new one to pop through the front door Thanks

Eloradannin · 25/01/2021 18:07

Yes, I was late sending mine back, I just sent it all in and got my licence back with no problems.

FFSdrivinghelp · 25/01/2021 18:16

Thank you @Coolerthanapolarbearstoenails and @Eloradannin Flowers panic is now subsiding thanks to you both!

I had this. Mine was in the wrong name with the wrong address and about 11 years out of date. I needed a new one urgently as my car finance wouldn't go through without it. I rang the dvla who were hugely helpful. I had a new one two weeks later and no fine.

Janek · 25/01/2021 18:52

The thing is, it's the photo card that's expired, not the licence. The licence is valid until your 70th birthday.

Kinneddar · 25/01/2021 18:56

I need to renew mine. It expired last summer. I dont have a passport and there's no post office nearby that does them. Is there a form you can download etc. Ive been going round in circles

Timeforabiscuit · 25/01/2021 19:00

Yup had exactly the same, new address, new name massively out of date.

Just sent it all off and it was fine.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/01/2021 19:01

Just order it in your maiden name. You can use either. May make it easier.

AluminumMonster · 25/01/2021 19:46

Me too! A few years ago, expired, change of name and address. From what I remember I had actually missed a tick box or something so they sent it back for me to revise with a nice cover letter. Don't panic, looks like it happens all the time!

CupoTeap · 25/01/2021 19:52

I did this in fact didn't even have a photo one and had to change everything plus get a photo one. Was fine, think they are just glad you've done it.

GreenSlide · 25/01/2021 20:03

Mine was a few years out of date and I had changed address when I finally reapplied for it. Got it back in the post 3 days later after online application, not a word was said. Fire it off and soon you won't have to give it headspace.

stickysticks · 25/01/2021 21:05

You are supposed to renew them when you change your surname and each time you move house but I didn't. I got married 23 years ago and have moved house 8 times! After years of putting it off (same reason as you - lost marriage certificate and fear of a massive fine) I finally ordered a new marriage certificate and got it done a couple of months ago. It was so simple I wish I'd done it years ago and saved myself the worry

stickysticks · 25/01/2021 21:07

... Oh, and that's even after getting a telling off by the police for not having an up to date licence when I was pulled for speeding 12 years ago! Blush

Thecrisplover · 25/01/2021 21:15

@Kinneddar I tried to find forms online, they are not available. I had to get a form D1 from the post office.

buckeejit · 25/01/2021 21:21

I didn't realise mine had run out years before, didn't even k now where the bloody thing was until I was stopped for speeding and had to 'present' my documents. Thankfully they 'let me off' with it being so old.

MrsDThomas · 25/01/2021 21:25

Mine expires in 2 months. If im right i can use the photo on my passport. Which is great as its 9 yrs old and i look fresh.

So by the time it expires in yrs to come ill look bloody amazing!

MrsDThomas · 25/01/2021 21:27

Anyway with the lack of staff at the DVLA due to covid, they haven’t The time to faff about chasing people.

MaryBoBary · 25/01/2021 21:43

Well done OP for getting things sorted Flowers I know how hard just working out what needs doing can be when your mental health is suffering. You should feel proud for taking this step and keep up the momentum Smile

Rillington · 25/01/2021 21:53

@Kinnedar @Thecrisplover You can order the forms from DVLA. www.gov.uk/dvlaforms

Fuckingcrustybread · 25/01/2021 21:59

@FFSdrivinghelp
I want to give you my utter heartfelt thanks for starting this thread. We've just renewed my husband's photo card driving licence. It was due to run out in June 2021, we're stuck abroad and have no way of getting home at the moment. We've been here since March 2020, thought it would be for a few months..... but we're still here.
Renewed online so when we do get home eventually it will be waiting.
Many, many thanks op. Flowers

Fuckingcrustybread · 25/01/2021 22:02

I should have added well done op for getting through your depression, it's not easy and best wishes going forward.

BathTangle · 25/01/2021 22:06

Am glad to see that you have been reassured and will be able to get it sorted OP Smile.

Can I just point out to others though that it is a legal requirement to tell the DVLA if you have moved? And also that you need to update both the driver record and the vehicle record as they won't always be automatically updated together.

Eloradannin · 25/01/2021 22:09

@FFSdrivinghelp
Glad I could help. I was really worried about doing mine, just in case I had a fine.
Just make sure you read the boxes you sign. I got my form sent back because I ticked the form to say I couldn't see WITH my glasses.
Despite this, I still have my licence (and can see perfectly well with my glasses) Grin

DuchenneParent · 25/01/2021 22:10

Hello, I recently applied for a new one with a new name (did have a cert though), new address and lost the old card! I didn't hear anything for ages after getting confirmation they recieved my application but eventually the new one just turned up no questions asked. Try not to worry!
I am naturally not very organised and my life has been one thing after another for the last couple of years so I understand how one can end up in this kind of situation!

OhMsBeliever · 25/01/2021 22:28

I didn't renew mine for about 5 years after moving house and it expiring. Nothing happened. I went off for a new one and got it with no problems. I was expecting the worst too.
