Photocard driving licence expired.. a long time ago...

Posting here for traffic. NC.

My photocard driving licence expired in 2011. Since then I have changed name and address. I’ve tried to renew it before now but it’s just so complicated. Can’t do it online. Lost my marriage certificate to prove change of name. Depression makes everything harder to complete. Easier to hide away from everything. Had a shit few years.

So here I am trying to get on top of everything and sort my life out.

Now I am going to send all the stuff with the completed form to DVLA this week but I’m now panicking as I can’t find a straight answer online. Some sites say I can have my licence revoked! I am in full panic mode now.

Anyone have any experience of this?

@Rillington. Thanks SO much for that. Youre an absolute star Flowers

I still have the paper one.

FindingHopeInSmallThings · 26/01/2021 04:13

I am in Europe and needed to swap mike due to Brexit.

Mine was still in my maiden name and with my parents address which they moved away from years and years ago. I had not been able to update the address to one outside the UK.

It was also an old paper one!!!

I rang them to ask for a certificate of proof of validity and they were fine about it being outdated info. I had also lost sleep over it too so feel your pain :)

They sent me the doctement i needed and I now have my new EU one and my old one is on its way back to the DVLA for cancellation.

Swap MINE not bloody MIKE :)

BeanieB2020 · 26/01/2021 04:21

Same happened to me. Nobody said anything when I got a new one.

1forAll74 · 26/01/2021 04:45

Mine is out of date also. When I was 70, I was supposed to renew every three years, am now over 78, and still not ever renewed. I keep forgetting to do it, so this has reminded me to get it sorted now. They may think I am dead now.!

soundofsilence1 · 26/01/2021 04:51

Glad it is not just me. Going through the process now. It is a bloody pain as it needs renewing and is in my maiden name which is different to my passport so I need to send it off for a name change and renew. It seems crazy that in the middle of a pandemic there is now way of downloading the form and I have been struggling to find any post offices that have any.

Now I hear there have been a massive covid outbreak at the dvla (500 people) so no idea when I will get it back.

mogloveseggs · 26/01/2021 04:51

Another one who hadn't got a photo card one and my license was the paper one when I passed my test 20 years earlier and I've moved house ten times since! No issues at all got it back 2 weeks later.

garlictwist · 26/01/2021 05:10

My friend got fined because the address on her licence did t match her current address.

Halfpint2017 · 26/01/2021 05:26

Hi op I got married in 2011 and same as you didn’t get round to changing my photo or my name or my address oops. I was so nervous about sending my documents away last year right in the middle of lockdown 1 but nothing was said and it was ok however it took about 3 months for them to send my card and identity documents back due to them being short staffed. I had lost my old license but I still had the paperwork from my driving test so was able to obtain my driving license number from this. You will be fine but get it done ASAP if you can so you won’t be worried again. 😘

Rillington · 26/01/2021 07:15

@1forAll74 Have you been driving? I know once you are over 70 you have to apply every 3 years. You probably haven't got a valid licence. It's different to the normal renew every 3 years for the under 70's.

Herdwick · 26/01/2021 07:40

@garlictwist

My friend got fined because the address on her licence did t match her current address.
Was that when she was stopped by the police or involved in an accident?

The DVLA don't fine people generally for not being up to date unless it's j avoidable, otherwise people like the OP (and me!) would get even more panicky about it doing it and put it off even more through fear.

Much better they allow people to rectify oversights with minimal fuss.

PurpleMustang · 26/01/2021 07:46

@1forAll74 you do need to sort that ASAP as that is a medical thing once over 70. You have to, I believe get the doctor to sign that you are fine to drive. You probably don't have a valid licence and therefore insurance if you did have an accident or got stopped by the police

PurpleMustang · 26/01/2021 07:47

Thank you OP for posting this, I moved years ago and have lost the card bit of mine and been worried about redoing it. I will just get on with it.

Custardslice3 · 26/01/2021 09:00

So relieved to read this and find I'm not the only one who is disorganised about things like this! Moved house 3 years ago, forgot to change the address for ages, then was too worried that it would be difficult or I'd 'get into trouble' so have buried my head in the sand and hoped it would go away. Am adding it to my to-do list for next week and will try to stop worrying about it now! Thanks OP.

Frownette · 26/01/2021 09:09

It's so easy to procrastinate.

Hope all sorted soon :)

HurricaneBitch · 26/01/2021 09:30

Moved house 20 years ago this July. Got married 17 years ago in September.
Driving Licence still paper at old address with old name. Although not illegal to drive under my old name, it most certainly is with my old address.
MUST sort this out!

FFSdrivinghelp · 26/01/2021 14:48

Thank you all so much for replying Flowers I am feeling so much better about it now thanks to you all! Funny how we think we are the only person to have ever been in that situation when we start panicking! My anxiety was through the roof yesterday.

I have ordered my new photo online because I can’t find an open photo booth anywhere so I should have the completed D1 form away by the end of this week!

Just sad now that my panic about this broke my dry January run last night Gin starting again today!

You'll be fine, OP.

I had to change my name, address and photo and the photocard had expired years ago. I sent it all off and it came back in the post about a week later, all sorted.

Thanks
happymonkey36 · 27/01/2021 20:54

Hi, I also need to renew my photocard but I have an Irish passport so they can't just use my passport photo. I need to order the forms and get them sent to me as I live miles from a post office that stocks them, but what can I do about getting passport photos? Normally I would pop into a supermarket booth or timpsons, but with wearing masks all the time that won't work! Any ideas?

ComeWhatMayKeepTheHope · 28/01/2021 06:21

I spent months/years worrying about this and breaking into sweats when I drove past police cars. Finally bit thé bulles and nothing was said. Feels so much better to be driving around with a lovely new licence.

Would have felt such relief to have read this when I was plucking up the courage to get to all sorted out.

And so glad I am
Not the only one :)))
