Can we have a nice thread about British culture?

Without goady fuckers spoiling all the niceness.
I vote seaside fish and chips.

I know it’s been said lots but I really do love how a cup of tea is the answer to all of life’s woes.

When I was about 21, a car pulled out right in front of me and the impact to the front corner sent me careering across the road and into a ditch. I was so upset and shaken and this lovely couple from a nearby house had heard the crash and promptly arrived with a broom for the glass in the road and a hot cup of sugary tea for me. So sweet and actually did make me feel loads better.

British weather! It's weird because people hate it but I so love it. Although this winter isn't my friend at all. Not sure why, as I've had colder ones. It's made me edit my favourite seasons list. Can't wait for Spring.

Easier access to most things I need.

Peace and quiet.

Fireplace.

You know the Tube station song?

I feel like someone needs to do a version with all these lovely things in lieu of stations!

Afromeg · 24/01/2021 21:18

Ooh love this!

Love the pride we have in our home towns!

The different accents.

The way we all get together behind our national football teams (and how the English are all really rooting for the other nations even though they never root for us!).

A decent Sunday lunch.

Fish and chips at the coast.

The national trust.

Queuing (realised as a teacher this starts from nursery when we line up!)

The queen and royal family and all the pomp that goes with them!

How things are understated,,watching the inauguration and obv thrilled that trump has gone but even the coronation of the new monarch won't be as OTT!! Although I'll be celebrating when bo jo and the tories get booted out..

The nhs-its ah outrage the American healthcare system! Yes the nhs is underfunded but by god am I grateful for it!

A decent cup of tea.

A decent biscuit (chocolate digestive I'm looking at you!)

Decent chocolate..

Crumpets

Full English breakfast.

Baycob · 24/01/2021 21:26

Being polite, smiling, Robinsons squash, steak pie, the royals, Scottish seafood.

BobISMyUncle · 24/01/2021 21:27

Our names!
In Wales, Jones the Milk, Jones the Butcher, etc.
Mr Sidebottom. A sheep thing, in the valley, at the bottom.
Mr Fletcher. The arrow person.
Such history!
Our pub names. Haven't had a chance yet, to look up those. No Google stuff, this is from real books. LOL! I welcome Google, but miss the poring over tomes x
I'm a Geek aren't I?
@PinkyParrot

On the previous thread, I said I was Scottish and had no affinity with British identity. I don't consider myself British and I don't need to.

I also went on to say that the thread was sneery and mean and that people should be free to post the things they like about where they live.

I'm free to identify in any way I choose when it comes to culture, something which is mainly objective.

No need for the shouting.
Castle ruins to tramp around, stately homes, clotted cream teas, sitting by the river in Cambridge, getting pissed on g&t (in a sedate way).

CarolNoE · 24/01/2021 21:37

So many ideas of stuff to do/reaquaint myself with after lockdown...and number 1 on the list is a cup of tea in a tea shop (& cake obviously), preferably at a stately home or National Trust.

Northernsoullover · 24/01/2021 21:37

Welsh Male Voice choirs.

Ingridla · 24/01/2021 21:37

British comedy
Horse riding in the countryside
British cuisine - which really ought to have a better rep these days

sarahC40 · 24/01/2021 21:38

Oh and as a recent hospital user, our bloody incredible nurses, drs, cleaners, ward assistants and the security guard who helped my son and came back to check I was ok. Also like firemen, but that’s another tale.

BobISMyUncle · 24/01/2021 21:40

The names, of some of our towns, villages. Aren't they a joy? Cockermouth. Little Snoring. Nether Wallop.
I think, only think, there's somewhere called Spitting in the Street. I need to look this up.
Our nation of Geeks! LOL! I'm looking at me. I never thought my life would go this way. And suddenly, I'm a Geek. Bugger.

mumwon · 24/01/2021 21:44

Shakespeare in the garden (Usually at NT property or park)with tea (of course) or wine picnic
Going to the seaside even if it rains & sitting in the car eating fish & chips looking at the sea Grin
& yes - tea in tea rooms with family
Antique shops (with tea rooms!)
Pubs with gardens outside where you can sit & eat a meal with friends
The British country side - from Isles of Scilly, across to Kent including East Anglia & across to Wales & all the way up past the Northern Borders to Scotland & all the Islands large & small around - in such a small space so much contrast. & I am so looking forward to seeing it again as soon as it is safe.
(Looks at atlas & dreams of planning & doing a British Rail Journey)
