Can we have a nice thread about British culture?

Without goady fuckers spoiling all the niceness.
I vote seaside fish and chips.

Town Criers

MissyB1 · 24/01/2021 20:37

NHS - not perfect but such an amazing aspiration and we should be very proud of it.

Tea and cake, it’s just so civilised.

Miss Marple - and the village she lives in.

The way we love to reminisce about our childhoods - particularly the food!! Grin

Our utter obsession with our dogs 🐶

Our beautiful landscapes.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/01/2021 20:38

burfordbrown last thread got deleted because OP was a goady fucker who started a thread just to have a pop at us.

rc22 · 24/01/2021 20:38

Afternoon tea
Peppermint seaside rock with the name of the resort going through it

newstart1234 · 24/01/2021 20:39

The British love of animals and dogs in particular.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/01/2021 20:39

mayonegg that was a lovely post

Pashazade · 24/01/2021 20:39

Bugger it, this thread is making me teary! All the things I love and feel/know I can't do! Black humour, taking your coat of or you won't feel the benefit. Cream teas and walking dogs on crisp days. Fires in pubs and swans on rivers.

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 24/01/2021 20:40

The opening ceremony of the London Olympics.
And the glorious bonkers-ness which is Mornington Crescent

Feathersinthehead · 24/01/2021 20:41

Yes, the archaeology, history, folklore and oldness of very ordinary places that are still in everyday use.
The fact you are never more than 7O miles from the sea, or a few miles from a river.
The seasons, the weather, the skies.
The language, with its mixture of Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Norman French and all the imported words that make it such a unique, surprising creation.

Blessex · 24/01/2021 20:42

Respecting others.

Gobbeldegook · 24/01/2021 20:43

Holy island is my most favourite place, I love how there is no urgency there, you can stroll along at peace and it's just breathtaking. Everyone is so welcoming. I love to buy home grown strawberries at the stall and eat them as I walk around the island.

London as an exciting city

Msfoxy17 · 24/01/2021 20:44

Agree that the post from @mayonegg was lovely. Really touched me. Nothing much to add to that!

I'm not from the UK. I live here now. I respect the privilege of being able to live here.

No-one can make you feel ashamed of being British, or English. There is much to celebrate, much to acknowledge. Isn't culture and heritage a bit like marriage - for better and for worse? It's a warts and all kind of a deal!

babygrootandstarlord · 24/01/2021 20:49

Tea
Fish & chips
Pub lunches
Ploughmans
NHS
Public transport
Seaside arcades, trampolines, helter skelters etc

Fish and chips at the seaside

Blessex · 24/01/2021 20:52

@mayonegg that’s beautiful and nuanced and everything I love about my country. England.

@Blibbyblobby also very true - our vaccination programme is an example of the first and I have heard the thing about pot education system a lot.

My German colleague says the British have a pragmatism and are prepared to improvise, and that means we crack on and get stuff done while other cultures want to plan everything in detail before they can start. He admired it in principle, although at work it drove him mad that we'd start projects without planning everything in detail first...

Another foreign colleague really admires our education system because we encourage kids to be creative and work out their own thoughts not just learn the approved facts and methods

userxx · 24/01/2021 20:52

Hedgehogs.

tinytemper66 · 24/01/2021 20:54

Scones with jam/cream...not going to be drawn into what goes first debate though! 🤣

PrinnyPree · 24/01/2021 20:56

Carpets of bluebells when you go for a woodland walk in spring.

Picking wild brambles to make an apple and bramble crumble (with lashings of birdseye custard)

A fire in a pub after a walk in the cold and ordering a pie and a pint. (Or a vodka in my case)

National trust houses and parks

Everyone has a commemorative tea towel in their kitchen drawer.

But yes the NHS it is our greatest achievement and we must all be vigilant at protecting it and not allow it to be chipped away because money men want to line their pockets. X

BobISMyUncle · 24/01/2021 20:57

We have Sir David Attenborough!!!
We used to have Stephen Hawking.
We helped save Mr Einstein, before he went to the U.S. He was housed in Norfolk.
Newspapers, through the letterbox.
OH! We have letterboxes!
Milk bottles.
Milkmen (people). Milk People.
Post people. Mine is called Vera. My last one was Pete. The one before Pete was Bert. He cleaned the streets as well. No longer with us, sadly. He only ever complained about chewing gum.
Our urge, to include everyone into our society.
Our sadness, that we can't, possibly.
Our humility.
Our "try to do better" attitude.
Our attitude to gun laws.
Our Police officers. Although, I've only ever had dealings with the police on the right side of the law.
I love the way that we can interact with eah other.
Dare I say it?
MumsNet.

Frenchblue · 24/01/2021 20:59
