Without goady fuckers spoiling all the niceness.
I vote seaside fish and chips.

I vote that on 9/11, an unbroken chain of utterly cheerful and friendly Brits passed me from one to the next, getting me home from Aldgate to Brent Cross, when I had absolutely no idea how to get there because I'd always been on the Tube, which was down. They shoved me on overcrowded buses, walked me along, cadged me lifts, no-one ever accepting any money. That's the British spirit at its best to me, which underpins British culture.

Architecture - look at Salisbury Cathedral, and St Pauls, look at the houses still standing 300 years later.

Artists - look at Stubbs, Reynolds, Turner, Banksey. . .

Writing - where would we be without Jane Austen, Beatrix Potter, A.A Milne, C.S. Lewis, George Eliot, Chaucer, Shakespeare and Dickens?

And I'd hate to live in a world without British Beer and Pub Grub!

bearlyactive · 24/01/2021 19:47

Pub grub!!

mbosnz · 24/01/2021 19:47

Oh, and Agatha Christie and BBC Period dramas. . .

mbosnz · 24/01/2021 19:48

And the Wombles!

Bekilted · 24/01/2021 19:49

@PinkyParrot

On the previous thread, I said I was Scottish and had no affinity with British identity. I don't consider myself British and I don't need to.

I also went on to say that the thread was sneery and mean and that people should be free to post the things they like about where they live.

I'm free to identify in any way I choose when it comes to culture, something which is mainly objective.

No need for the shouting.

YougoFargo · 24/01/2021 19:50

YougoFargo · 24/01/2021 19:54

Thought of a few more:
Rain related activities - everything from going to the beach to having picked “that” week to camping in Pembrokeshire/Cornwall
BBC comedy

Kettledodger · 24/01/2021 19:55

From someone who was not born here but has spent most of her adult life in the UK.

The architecture and history of buildings/earthworks/gravesites etc. The diversity of dialects and traditions of each individual area of the UK from the Dorset twang to the Highland games! The UK as a whole is an extremely tolerant society not to mention an extremely multicultural.

Through the multicultural nature of UK the diverse food that is on offer is fantastic but I have to agree a fish and chip supper on the many many coastal areas of the UK is the best!!

MadameMiggeldy · 24/01/2021 19:56

@mbosnz

Cider. . .
The glorious cannot be bested Indy ciders and perries.
MoltenLasagne · 24/01/2021 19:57

Long walks on a wet and windy day with a pub lunch at the end complete with roaring fire.
Watching clouds on an overcast day to ensure you're ready to take your jacket off for the 15 seconds the sun is out.

A complete obsession with dogs - is there anywhere that rivals Brits for this? I'd love to know if there are but the countries I know best think we're all slightly batty...

MistleTOEboughski · 24/01/2021 19:57

I just found out Banoffi pie was invented here in Sussex and of course we have some great restaurateurs and chefs, although some more in the Basil Fawlty mould. Even though people joke British food is awful it's actually come a long way since the 1950s.

This is a thread about British Culture why post here then.

Folk songs Steeleye Span style! (Also Gaelic ones Clannad style!)

MakeWorkYourNewFavourite · 24/01/2021 20:02

I'm British, but live in France. The last time I went home, I took a giant suitcase to fill with pickled onions and Scampi Fries. I couldn't believe how many people offered to help me on and off buses and trains with this suitcase.
In Paris, I've been stuck on métro steps with a baby and buggy while people just march past me.
I love how polite and caring you are.

LittleSwede · 24/01/2021 20:03

Things I've come to appreciate in my 21 years living here: Sunday roasts (rarely do this back in Sweden!), tea, British bbqs with bangers and burgers, always slightly scorched and served in a soft white bap with red sauce, Pimms, fish and chips and that first cold drink you have sat in a beer garden at some point in March when the sun makes an appearance and you feel that Spring is just around the corner.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 24/01/2021 20:03

@MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously

I was enjoying the last one too. I do wish MNHQ wouldn't be so quick to pull threads.
Why did it go?
WorraLiberty · 24/01/2021 20:04

Tea rooms and bunting Grin
