A full English is good but an Ulster fry definitely wins for me! But yes, any cooked breakfast (with a mug of tea!).

I think our theatre and music are outstanding.

TinkersRucksack · 24/01/2021 20:10

Afternoon tea. All of everything that is lovely all in one meal.

LunaHeather · 24/01/2021 20:10

mbosnz · 24/01/2021 20:11

Coronation Street - back when it had Hilda Ogden . . .

Oh, and it's not culture as such - but this morning, I was up early, and there was a fox sauntering past my front gate, in the snow, looking for all the world like he was doing the walk of shame and his missus would have 'is guts for garters. . .

And later on, I looked across the way, and there's a deer. . .

Tea
Saying "sorry' for everything
Politely queuing
More tea

LunaHeather · 24/01/2021 20:11

Oh and fish and chips and cooked breakfasts and afternoon tea....

BobISMyUncle · 24/01/2021 20:13

The way we seem to have random conversations with strangers and make each other smile. You know the thing, at bus stops, in a queue, completely random.
Our sense of humour.
Our insistence, that some words need a "U" in there, e.g. Color. See the red wiggly line there?
The fact that we ARE completely capable x
How we come together, in the face of adversity x
The fact that we're British dammit x

SecretWitch · 24/01/2021 20:15

I love the weather, cold rainy afternoons and long English summers. Where I live in the US, it’s dark by 8:30 pm in the summer. I remember such long lovely twilights in England.

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2021 20:17

Tea.
I moved here in the early 90s for the music and stayed for the tea.

RickOShay · 24/01/2021 20:18

The championing of the underdog. Self deprecation. The importance of the individual. The freedom to be yourself whoever that may be.
And tea.

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2021 20:19

And your stand-up comedians... seriously. It's easy to take them for granted and roll our eyes at them when they join a panel show, but British comedians are in a class by themselves. Legends are made here.

Our food scene is varied, excellent and way, way better than we get credit for. I don't live that far away from L'Enclume and one day, I will go and eat in there! Got to save up Grin

BobISMyUncle · 24/01/2021 20:24

Bus passes! I can't wait to get mine!!
Have bus pass, will travel. At least, within my county.
The way we insist on sitting on a beach, in horrid weather. I'm sure that's why windbreak things were invented.
Beach huts. See above.
Tea, in a flask. Hot water bottles. See above.
Soggy sandwiches. See above.
The way that we seem to find humour in so many things, that aren't actually funny. Except they are, to us Brits.

mayonegg · 24/01/2021 20:25

I am in love with our gentle but varied countryside, the greenness, the woodlands and the trees, the fields, dry stone walls, hedgerows, the neatness and purpose of little towns and villages, our buildings, cottage gardens. Our coastline, our folk tales and folk music, traditional pubs (are there many left?) with their dark cosy wood and nicknacks amassed over the years. Roaring fires with the wind howling outside. Gentle humour, kindness, the willingness to see the best in people, the tendency towards politeness and courtesy, our willingness to help each other out, beautiful old bookshops, our rich language with all it's wonderful nuances. Our weather and climate, not too hot not too cold, our very defined seasons and everything about them, rainy days and dramatic skies. I love our tradition of Christianity and church hymns and tea and biscuits, but also the fact we're still very pagan at heart with our maypoles and halloween and other local customs that vary from place to place. I think if you strip away the politics (which I have no interest in for the sake of my own mental health) and the 'culture' of materialism and celebrity and selfishness and fakeness perpetuated by the media, I think we have the most wonderfully rich culture with our roots in the nature and spirituality of the island. I'm not sure if what I've written is culture or just snippets of things I love about the place, but I feel like that's what's in my soul. I think I am a little bit pagan though. Sorry this isn't as well written as posts usually are on MN, I'm not as articulate as most on here but felt compelled to post on this thread because I feel so weary of being made to feel ashamed of being British (English).

Timeforatincture · 24/01/2021 20:25

@LunaHeather

Oh yes! And I know how may otters you can get on an aircraft too!

Timeforatincture · 24/01/2021 20:26

Peak of British civilisation! Along with I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

Blibbyblobby · 24/01/2021 20:27

My German colleague says the British have a pragmatism and are prepared to improvise, and that means we crack on and get stuff done while other cultures want to plan everything in detail before they can start. He admired it in principle, although at work it drove him mad that we'd start projects without planning everything in detail first...

Another foreign colleague really admires our education system because we encourage kids to be creative and work out their own thoughts not just learn the approved facts and methods.

I think Terry Pratchett is wonderful and I don't think his style could have come from any culture but Britain.

merryhollybright · 24/01/2021 20:32

Can I give a little mention to car boot sales

I am missing them terribly

MirandaMarple · 24/01/2021 20:34

Since getting into camping about 5 years ago, I have never seen so much of our beautiful isle. I feel very lucky that I've been able to get to so many pretty villages and towns.

Don't forget Queenie!!
The Pomp and Circumstance thing. Our British Forces.
Our countryside. Green Belts. Brown Belts.
Our steam railway things, that survive because of volunteers. Our "Geeks", that try to preserve everything.
Our actors, all the Dames and all of our Sirs.
William Shakespeare.
Our heritage. Our history. All those archaelogical (spelling?) digs, that throw more light onto who we were, what we were doing, how we lived.
Our planning permission.
Our eccentricity.
Our Britishness.
