Things you see on walks

I think I saw a Buzzard. Well that's what I've identified it as in my bird book. I saw it both perched in trees and flying between them.

Anyone else seen anything interesting this week?

I’ve just been on a local walk and saw a fox running over the path ahead.
Last week we saw a flock of Redwings in a field. Just getting to grips with our common species. Love the birdsong at the moment.Love to see buzzards and herons.

TeenPlusTwenties · 22/01/2021 15:08

Buzzards and red kites are relatively common round our way, and we have a heron that flies over twice daily too.
(Also occasional chinooks. Wink)

We have a couple of blackbirds one with a single white feather on one wing, and another with a white head. I like to think they are descended from an albino one that was around about 8-10 years ago.

StinkyDora · 22/01/2021 15:14

We saw a big rabbit in the woods today. Unfortunately so did the dog! She didn't catch anything but spent the next half hour pretending to be a wolf and refusing to come back. Lots of birds about and bluebell shoots just starting to appear.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/01/2021 15:14

Spring! This morning, sun! and lots of violets on a sunny bank, crocuses (yellow and purple) and several big mimosa trees about to come into bloom. All seen on a 20 minute walk to small local Sainsbury’s.

This is in outer SW London - commiserations to everyone elsewhere flooded, snowed in, or suffering any crappy and still wintry weather ATM.

LuvMyBoyz · 22/01/2021 15:16

And two tornados flying very high but still making a jet noise.

I live on an Army camp, most of my interesting sights are various vehicles. But only saw two land rovers on the off road course today.

I see the prey birds hoovering sometimes, but don't usually get close. We did have a sparrowhawk in the garden a few months back.

I've got my birdwatch pack from RSPB ready for next week.

A parakeet! In a local park, not a sunny tropical isle, sadly.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2021 15:31

I've started putting my sightings on this thread again

Nature Notes http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronafreee_zone/3860472-nature-notes

Buzzards seem to have become a lot commoner in the last few years. They're quite magnificent wheeling overhead.

BoogleMcGroogle · 22/01/2021 15:41

We often see buzzards, herons and red kites on our ( many, there’s nothing else to do) walks. I love them. And I also love the little songbirds we encounter.

Apologies for lowering the tone...I was saying to DH at the weekend is what you don’t see on country walks any more is porn mags in bushes. He, being a sophisticated Londoner who moved to the country after the arrival of the internet refused to believe that was ever a thing. It very much was in Norfolk in the eighties!

Angel2702 · 22/01/2021 15:41

Foxes and pigeons are the most interesting we ever see.

EssentiallyDelighted · 22/01/2021 15:43

I'm in Chinook territory too, but didn't see or hear any today. I did see that a tree I've always liked has been chopped down Sad. Snowdrops in people's gardens (I stayed in town rather than out into open spaces today). I love looking at houses and gardens as I walk.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/01/2021 15:45

@BoogleMcGroogle last year on a hike with his Scouts DH came across some cars with some 'activity' going on inside. Got some interesting questions from the younger members...

We saw a fox on our walk yesterday and some Redwing, Nuthatch and Bullfinch. A Grey Heron. We could hear Chiffchaff but didn't see them.

We often see otters and kingfishers by the river.

Yes, we've always referred to it as "hedge porn", I haven't seen any for years

We are fortunate to live fairly rurally and see a wide variety of wildlife. My favourite is the family of stoats that live on site at work, and the hares I see on my drive in. I also regularly see a barn owl on my way home after a night shift.

BoogleMcGroogle · 22/01/2021 17:16

Just been out for a twilight walk and saw two barn owls hunting. A beautiful sight.

Still no hedge porn, alas.

McQueensMuse · 22/01/2021 17:22

Today I saw one deer and two cross country skiers.

PickAChew · 22/01/2021 17:23

Mostly ice and puddles and an awful lot of mud. Too high to be flooded but it's been such a wet autumn and winter that they've had to dig drainage channels around our local nature reserve. The magpies were on the rampage when we walked through, this morning, so apart from them, all we heard was other corvids giving them what for.

Roselilly36 · 22/01/2021 17:25

Buzzards are amazing to watch, we often see them and peregrine falcons, you always know when the falcons are about the seagulls go into a state of panic and make horrendous noise.

dudsville · 22/01/2021 17:26

Last week I heard geese flying overhead. I seem to be able to catch this phenomena annually. I always stop to admire!

00100001 · 22/01/2021 17:27

A house in the village pits up jokes I'm their window, and changes then every day

Today's joke;

What do you call 2 rows of cabbages?

A dual-cabbage-way!

00100001 · 22/01/2021 17:27

And if a nature note. 3 red kites all flying together

ThePlantsitter · 22/01/2021 17:28

I saw a kingfisher and a heron in my London park the other day. Many feisty squirrels. Parakeets. Children being forced out of the house. Grin

Too. Many. Dogs. (I like dogs but really).

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/01/2021 17:29

I am most excited as I have a confirmed sighting of a red kite

Equally good has been the handful of weasels I have seen in and out of hedgerows.

And a sighting of a boar and some humbugs - which might give away where I live, ish!

ILiveInSalemsLot · 22/01/2021 17:30

I’ve seen foxes, deer, mice and woodpeckers occasionally. I’ve seen bats too when we’ve been out quite late. Hundreds of parakeets and common garden birds. I would love to see owls.

CarrieMoonbeams · 22/01/2021 17:42

What a lovely thread!

I absolutely love buzzards, we see them regularly here, they're magnificent. My favourite birds.

Today we saw a grey squirrel, some enormous wood pigeons (one of my dogs was very interested in them!) and a PUPPY!!! A Working Cocker, on her first ever walk. She was very excited about a leaf, a sparrow, my dogs, an icy bit on the pavement, and her own tail 😍.

Jealous of the PP who's seen owls. We hear barn owls and tawny owls regularly here but I've never ever seen one. The first time I heard the barn owl I got a real fright - it was flying while screeching and it was so loud! I had to come in and Google it to see what the hell it was.

Oh and I nearly forgot, haven't seen any Spring flowers yet but lots of shoots coming up.
