Things you see on walks

I think I saw a Buzzard. Well that's what I've identified it as in my bird book. I saw it both perched in trees and flying between them.

Anyone else seen anything interesting this week?

@CoffeeWithCheese

I can beat all of this.

A BSB Squarial still fitted to a house near here

😂😂😂

MechantGourmet · 23/01/2021 01:33

I had no idea there were boar here, and I've even been to the Forest of Dean Blush

grassisjeweled · 23/01/2021 01:36

Snowy tree a couple of day ago (live abroad)

Also saw the woman next door putting the bins out with bare legs/ no pants on... Bit odd

I remember seeing a buzzard in our park in lockdown last year. I was so surprised, never seen one before and had to go home and google a description of it!

Downunderduchess · 23/01/2021 02:16

These are two of the local birds at my place. A cockatoo sitting on the outdoor umbrella in my backyard and a yellow tailed black cockatoo flying around under my Jacaranda tree

I saw my first snowdrops of the year today. Cheered me up a bit.

Saw hundreds of Brent geese having a rest in the park behind my house today. Hundreds of them! It was a sight to behold. They migrate here from Canada and fly back in April. No Covid restrictions for them!

We live in london and a Heron regularly sits on a neighbour's roof.

Furries · 23/01/2021 03:11

@TeenPlusTwenties

Buzzards and red kites are relatively common round our way, and we have a heron that flies over twice daily too. (Also occasional chinooks. Wink)

We have a couple of blackbirds one with a single white feather on one wing, and another with a white head. I like to think they are descended from an albino one that was around about 8-10 years ago.

Ooh, I’m jealous - the chinook is my second favourite aircraft, they’re amazing!

I don’t get to be out on walks much, but the last week from home have seen a sparrow hawk narrowly miss it’s target in my back garden, a male pheasant strutting round in the garden, blue tits balancing on the square-panned windows and looking into the lounge at me, a huge fluffy cat that isn’t mine sitting on the decking and a squirrel running across the lawn. I also have robins that I hear singing all the time and, when I am outside, come really close which I love!

When I lived in a flat in east London, had various foxes I’d see clearly every night from my bedroom window. Since living rurally I’ve seen 1 in 8 years.

Somewhere out the front are tawny owls. I love hearing them at night, but have sadly never seen an owl.

I’ve seen a few kestrels when I’ve been driving down country lanes.

And tiny little bats just before dusk - have lost track of what time of year it is (2020 just kind of blended into one!). But I loved taking a chilled glass of wine out and sit in the middle of the lawn to just catch them out the corner of my eye, swooping and darting so quickly and silently.

I blooming love nature!

Mountain lion, rattlesnake, bear, bobcat, coyote, Jerusalem cricket, and watching some kind of bird of prey swoop down and pick up an American coot are the coolest things I've seen. But I have a massive soft spot for all the woodpeckers and hummingbirds around here.

Onedropbeat · 23/01/2021 05:36

I saw a kingfisher last week

This week I saw a red squirrel but I was dreaming. It feels like a memory now though.
It was so cute

Mintjulia · 23/01/2021 05:40

I dragged DS out for a walk today. We saw a pair of roe deer running across a field. The stag had small antlers, and I think they are quite a young pair. They have white tails that show up really clearly against the ploughed soil. Smile

welliguessitwouldbenice · 23/01/2021 05:46

I used to see a pair of black swans and lots of Canada geese but since my doggy got attacked by another at our usual waking places, we’ve had to stick to urban streets. Being a former street dog herself, the finds this week have been 2x lamb leg bones, a chicken carcass and abandoned KFC (not all roads have wheelie bins). She’s in 7th heaven. I’m missing the birds Smile

Blimey - I’m kind of jealous and not at the same time! I love watching nature programmes, but not sure how I’d feel if seeing a mountain lion, bear or rattlesnake! Though I guess it’s what seems normal to how you live.

You’ve just reminded me - I’ve lived in the country for 8 years and last year I heard my first woodpecker. Didn’t see it, but definitely heard it.

And also remembered, I hear a cuckoo every year - always reminds me of my Nan and the rhyme she used to say:

The cuckoo comes in April
He sings his song in May
He changes his tune in the middle of June
And in July he flies away

I love deer! Fond memories as a small child over 30 years ago seeing the deer in Richmond Park. Where I am now, occasionally see muntjac deer, but nothing else.

Bears are cool but the mountain lion scared the shit out of me (fortunately very rare) and I hate snakes if I come across them suddenly (had the rattlesnakes pointed out at a safe distance by others, so that was not too bad).

I LOVE woodpeckers.

Oh and we have sea otters too, they are massively cute.

Jealous of the kingfishers.

Calmasasleepycat · 23/01/2021 06:04

We saw two blackcaps on our walk yesterday. They were singing to each other, tunefully and very loudly!

Love it - “bears are cool”. I’d probably soil myself! Even though I’m always rooting for them when I watch a documentary.

What type of bears are they? And why is a mountain lion more frightening than a bear? Sorry for questions, just can’t imagine coming across either.

Very jealous, would love to see an otter 💕

And love the fact that from everything listed you love woodpeckers and kingfishers! I saw hummingbirds on holiday once - was transfixed and felt lucky to have seen them.

ProperVexed · 23/01/2021 06:18

I walk along a river most days with my camera. I regularly see kingfishers and otters. I'm very lucky.

What were they hiding from? Grin

SummerLightning · 23/01/2021 06:47

I think it was purely that the bears have mostly been further away and looked more uninterested in me! This summer we saw a bear mooching along with two little ones following - really cute. They are the smaller brown/black bears, not grizzly ones - we don't get bears right near me but in national parks a few hours away.

The mountain lion was also not very interested but looked straight at me before sloping off, I was also on my own that time so quite scared.

You’ve obviously got some amazing walks and wildlife near you, I’m really envious. Although I’m rural, I think the most dangerous thing I’ve come across is a small terrier-type dog who had a clearly rubbish owner!

In a lot of ways, we're quite sanitised in the Uk. Though some wildcats are being reintroduced, but I need to look into if that’s still going ahead given covid. I’m hoping it happens.
