Things you see on walks

I think I saw a Buzzard. Well that's what I've identified it as in my bird book. I saw it both perched in trees and flying between them.

Anyone else seen anything interesting this week?

There is a beautiful heron that lives by the river near me so I often see him when I walk our dog. Would love to see some falcons or other birds of prey.

Other than that all I seem to see is piles of dog poo, it's is all along the pavements, all around town. It really spoils an otherwise nice walk as I am constantly trying to dodge it, you have to keep an eye on the ground at all times. Really disgusting that people don't clean up after their pets!

On the other hand no porn mags in the hedgerow!

MechantGourmet · 22/01/2021 18:48

@CuriousaboutSamphire

I am most excited as I have a confirmed sighting of a red kite

Equally good has been the handful of weasels I have seen in and out of hedgerows.

And a sighting of a boar and some humbugs - which might give away where I live, ish!

A boar? Shock Are you in the UK?

An humbug to me is a minty sweet though...

Wildernesstips · 22/01/2021 18:53

Great thread. Not seen today, but I have recently seen a barn owl and a deer on my walks. I love to see how the seasons change small things in a landscape.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/01/2021 18:54

Not recent, but in the first lockdown DS and I saw a wolf spider with all her babies on her back!

YolandiFuckinVisser · 22/01/2021 18:57

A kingfisher

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 22/01/2021 19:03

On my everyday walks at the moment:
sparrows. magpies, wood pigeons, grey pigeons, blackbirds and rats

NeedToKnow101 · 22/01/2021 19:07

Not today but late summer we saw a coot or moorhen family with the cutest, tiniest, little chicks swimming along close up, walking along a little ledge and just generally being adorable. 😍

NeedToKnow101 · 22/01/2021 19:08

Obviously seen lots of other stuff since then, but they were just adorable.

BlueLionel · 22/01/2021 19:11

@KingsHeathen there's a flock of parakeets in one of my local parks too. Wonder if it's the same one...?

lljkk · 22/01/2021 19:13

I cycle with DS to his job some twilights/evenings -- we recently saw bats fluttering around!
I'm used to them in summer, but in early winter??
I thought they would all be hibernating by late December, but maybe not.

Lonelycrab · 22/01/2021 19:14

Not nature but I quite often find spent blank bullets. I’m surrounded by mod training land, you’re allowed to walk there when there isn’t training on. Yesterday found about 50 in one spot, obviously the soldier had emptied his machine gun!

Also see those little piles of sawdust in a trail, I know from my running days they’re from the hash house harriers.

There are wild boar in the Forest of Dean, maybe elsewhere?
As to the humbugs, from the context and it being way too early for baby grebes, I assume something like this.Grin

Electricwigglefish · 22/01/2021 19:21

I saw a kingfisher. I have never seen one in real life, such a beautiful colour it really cheered me up!!

nuitdesetoiles · 22/01/2021 19:23

I have seen an eagle, a grey heron and a stag on my walks.. ☺️

nuitdesetoiles · 22/01/2021 19:25

And LOADS of foxes

addicted2spaniels · 22/01/2021 19:28

We saw a fox last week, and as we've got a local nature reserve, we get lots of canada geese flying overhead most mornings. We also see quite a few roe deer, especially at first light. Lots of bats on our late afternoon/early evening walks but our dogs are very used to them as we have some in the soffit boards of the house.

I much prefer wildlife on our walks.....we randomly had 2 low flying helicopters overhead yesterday - I think they were observing the flood plain along the Severn. I am very very unnerved by helicopters as it is, let alone ones circling overhead. I spent most of our walk almost in the hedge Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2021 19:30

I saw red deer and peacocks on my walk yesterday. Grin
(They're on a farm in our village)

Biscoffaddict · 22/01/2021 19:31

Last summer I saw a Hare, a Woodpecker and a Field Mouse whilst out walking. More recently I saw a flock of Jay birds.

Odile13 · 22/01/2021 19:33

I saw a kingfisher too this week. Never seen one before. Just saw a flash of blue and red/orange and couldn’t believe it.

This is a lovely thread. I like reading about what people see on walks. I’m seeing lots of robins recently. And I like watching all the different dogs in the local park. People watching is good too!

CoffeeWithCheese · 22/01/2021 19:47

I can beat all of this.

A BSB Squarial still fitted to a house near here

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/01/2021 19:48

I'm jealous of the kingfisher sightings. I've never seen one. I've seen a range of other stuff, but never a kingfisher. I used to see an Egret in South London, that's probably the most unusual. (The parakeets became normal there!).

Love this thread. My 6 year old really wants to see a fox! We’ve heard them but haven’t spotted one. We’ve seen hares (they are beautiful) kestrels, lots of dragon flies, long tailed tits, gold finches and a massive newt!!

ProfYaffle · 22/01/2021 19:51

The other week we saw 2 walking boots, stuck in the mud. Presumably pulled off the owners feet by suction. I spent the rest of the walk imagining how pissed off I'd be if I had to complete it in just socks.

Lonelycrab · 22/01/2021 20:03

Me too, would love to see one. My friends at work have seen one a few times, unbelievably they’re in London, near Lewisham of all places!

We were mountain biking last summer on a tiny track in the Forest of Dean and my DP nearly crashed into a wild boar. I missed it unfortunately but it was very dramatic.
