Things you see on walks

I think I saw a Buzzard. Well that's what I've identified it as in my bird book. I saw it both perched in trees and flying between them.

Anyone else seen anything interesting this week?

Camellias today.

@MsRinky

I usually see kingfishers once a week or so, but I've seen them every day this week! I don't know whether there are more of them, or if I've just got better at spotting them.
There seem to be a lot of kingfishers on this thread! I'm wondering if the weather has caused some difference - if they're avoiding floods, for instance.

Lovely thread. I'm in California and on a walk by the coast this week we saw a pod of dolphins. They were quite far out and I'm kicking myself that I didn't have any binoculars, but you could see them swimming in formation, it was so exciting.

LemonDrizzles · 23/01/2021 18:34

I saw a local small lake from a different angle. It was stunning

We see robins on a daily basis on walks which is fortunate as they're my favourite birds. We live in an urban area so see a fox or two on most evening/night-time talks

In our garden hedge we have nesting... BlueTits, Great Tits, Robins, sparrows and maybe Coal Tits (I'm not 100% on it,they have the same pattern as the other tits, but sort of grey-beige). We have blackbirds, Woodpigeons and magpies visiting the feeders. Crows sometimes have a peck around too. Plus squirrels attacking the bird feeders.

Rabbits live in the field behind the garden.

The rspb has pretty good pictures and descriptions for bird ID, OP and also this which might be useful

Im using an RSPB guide to identify the bird feeder visitors. I learnt the difference between Great and Blue tits in Lockdown 1.
My bird feeders make me very happy. I love watching them.

You are all making me miss British birds, California birds are just not the same (apart from the hummingbirds and condors, who rock)

Wow, incredible

I saw a muntjac deer (there are lots round here) walk into a grassy clearing mid morning and stop and wait. Very shortly after that 2 magpies flew up and landed on its back and one leaned down and pecked at the deer's rear end, presumably eating parasites. The deer just stood still while this went on and only strolled off when it saw me and the dog. Never seen a deer do that before.

QueenOfLabradors · 23/01/2021 20:32

@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork that's amazing! We've got loads of muntjac too, although since we usually have the dogs with us I tend to see them moving away... Although muntjac are definitely braver than the roe or the fallow deer.

I get so excited when I see hummingbirds! I thought they were big bees the first few times I saw them Grin

Walking around the local streets I keep seeing discarded nitrous oxide canisters. Suddenly am noticing they are everywhere.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 23/01/2021 23:57

Yesterday on my walk I saw a man sunbathing stark bollock naked on his balcony. Not a young, handsome Adonis but a Friends-style ugly naked guy 🤮

I’m sure you’re a stunning Aphrodite.

TotorosFurryBehind · 24/01/2021 01:02

Pheasant in a graveyard.

LoveFall · 24/01/2021 01:18

I haven't seen any yet, but a few nights ago I heard coyotes howling in our neighbourhood. Yesterday I read that they have had to close some trails in our big urban park because coyotes were nipping at cyclists and hikers.

Keeping a close eye and leash on little dog as they have been known to snatch dogs.

LoveFall · 24/01/2021 01:30

And I have seen coyotes many times, and DH sees them frequently in the forest near our apartment.🐾

Neves7 · 24/01/2021 01:55

A panda or rather a person wearing a panda costume including a very large fluffy head. I didn’t ask....

Furries · 24/01/2021 01:59

@Neves7 - you’ve just reminded me. Someone in a stormtrooper costume in our local supermarket.
