Sudden sense of impending doom

It's really weirded me out. Just randomly got hit by this feeling of impending doom. Like a really anxious sinking feeling in my stomach and my brain just feeling, well, doomy? Never suddenly felt like this before!

OP posts:
rumandbiscuits · 20/01/2021 19:22

Oh gosh I've just read this thread and the warning signs Blush I'm pretty certain mine is anxiety because I've had it numerous times. I hope you are ok. Look after yourself.

EvilEdna1 · 20/01/2021 19:23

As someone else said. Very common symptom of perimenopause

Vinosaurus · 20/01/2021 19:24

Had this just before a massive pulmonary embolism. Think you should get this checked out if it came on suddenly and you don't suffer from anxiety/panic attacks.

I got this in the middle of the night last night but it turned into a full scale panic attack. Bedding was soaked with sweat and I didn't get back to sleep afterwards. It's a horrible feeling. Felt really sick and shaky all day too. Think the covid related nightmares didn't help.

WhydoesItAlwaysRainMe · 20/01/2021 19:26

@Dugi3

This exact thing happened to me several days ago and it has not shifted since. I wake with the shakes and that sickly nervous feeling that builds until I feel panicked. It is a horrible feeling, I contacted the GP who prescribed some anti anxiety medication, maybe worth a thought if the feeling does not lift?

If you don't mind me asking, did the anti-anxiety medication work. I'm really considering speaking to my GP about it

nowbringmethathorizon · 20/01/2021 19:27

@peaceanddove

Can I ask how old you are OP? If you're late 30s onwards it could well be your hormones buggering about thanks to the peri menopause. I belong to a menopause support forum and sudden plunging feelings of doom and inexplicable anxiety are very common symptoms.
This sounds like me. Recently been put on HRT for perimenopause symptoms and forgot to take my menopace last night!
Hugoslavia · 20/01/2021 19:27

It's not a sign of Sepsis. Trust me, if you had Sepsis you would be feeling very poorly. I do occasionally feel like this if I am feeling under the weather, tired or haven't eaten properly. So don't let it worry you too much, but do get it checked out.

alienbeings · 20/01/2021 19:28

I get this occasionally but it's not when I'm ill but when my DC is. A number of times I have woken up with the feeling and then ten minutes or so later my DC wakes up and needs emergency medication. It can have many causes.

AnaisNun · 20/01/2021 19:29

It’s a funny symptom isn’t it, because it sounds quite... unmedical? ... but it’s one that medics take very seriously. It can be a big warning that something is very wrong.

I would call 111 - particularly if combined with a shaky feeling.

Ch3rish · 20/01/2021 19:29

@IHateCoronavirus

Goodness op hope you are ok. Mumsnet is a wonderful place to find out important stuff. I never knew this was a thing but it could save someone’s life.
I have also never heard of this, I was going to post to say it happens to me sometimes but nothing bad has resulted

I hope you're OK and glad to know I've learned something catfight help in the future

AlexaShutUp · 20/01/2021 19:29

Please get it checked out, OP. Just in case.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 20/01/2021 19:30

Interesting other people mentioning menopause. Last month I had a week or so having really quite bad anxiety that came out of me nowhere which started to lift after my period started. I’m 43 and wondering if it’s a peri menopausal symptom.

JustAPassingFashion · 20/01/2021 19:31

To echo what others have said, OP, my husband has lots of ongoing medical intervention and the majority of 'check ups' include being asked if he has, to quote, 'an impending sense of doom.'

I always found it an odd ohrase so googled it.... which is what made me click the post.

You're likely just tired or overwhelmed with the world and it's current state but it may be best to get checked out just in case Brew

Frodont · 20/01/2021 19:31

Its a panic attack. They are horrible OP. Be kind yo ypurself. Deep slow breaths really help

gamerchick · 20/01/2021 19:32

Good grief. Hmm it's usually the physical effects of anxiety. Your body dumps a load of adrenaline into your system for no reason. It sucks but if it happens often, bets blockers take care of it.

I really wouldn't go rushing to a&e on the offchance its ruddy sepsis.

I can't believe it took two pages for anyone to say anxiety/panic. Of course it isn't sepsis or a massive pulmonary embolism Hmm
chesterfuckingdraws · 20/01/2021 19:35

Do you have any aches and/or pains anywhere? Any other symptoms.

A feeling of impending doom can be a warning sign for seizures, heart attack, blood clots, poisoning lots of things. Medical staff usually take it quite seriously and will do further tests to rule things out.

I'd contact 101 and explain to them and ask DH to keep an eye on you too.

ABigFatCrow · 20/01/2021 19:35

That's exactly how I would have described my first panic attack and subsequent generalised anxiety disorder experience. It felt like I was in an end of the world movie when the characters start to realise whats happening.

Once I understood what it was I was able to manage it and get rid of it but I felt awful for a few months. If its not the more immediate things the posters above have suggested maybe it could be GAD.

KeeefBurtain · 20/01/2021 19:39

I felt like this the day before I had a heart attack. Please don’t ignore any chest or back pains if you get them

BogRollBOGOF · 20/01/2021 19:40

When I get that feeling, I check my calendar and it's PMS. I'm at the end of my 30s and it has got stronger over the last couple of years. Particularly since March and really not helped by Boris planning lockdowns around my menstrual cycle Grin

Stroller15 · 20/01/2021 19:42

OP, impending sense of doom is a well known symptom for various diseases/events, especially for women. If you don't normally suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, I would probably call 111.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 20/01/2021 19:43

It can be a sign of sepsis for all of you laughing and rolling your eyes.
Hopefully it isnt in this case but it's not helpful to rubbish the idea of someone needing medical attention

It is far, far more likely to be a panic attack. It's textbook.

Really? When I went to the docs he gave me valium and beta blockers and didn't even examine me let alone refer for tests!

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 20/01/2021 19:47

Yes more likely but saying "dont be ridiculous it cant be anything serious and just a panic attack" when someone is concerned isnt helpful.
Unless you are a medical professional who has spoken to the op
