You can learn to do anything by watching YouTube videos!

OK - I suppose not everything. I am not a natural DIY'er but by following instructions on you tube, I have:

Changed a car battery
Changed a battery on a tablet
Changed a broken laptop screen
Replaced the washing machine belt (although I will never do that again)
Built an outside pizza oven

I'm amazed at the zillions of "how to" videos on there. Does anyone else find YouTube as incredibly handy as me? Anyone else had successes?

Yes, though not quite as adventurous as you.
Learnt to crochet and picked up sewing tips, also some accounts stuff.

My friend swapped out the sump in her cellar and fixed her pool pump.

I find some interesting stuff to listen to on it too, so many unis upload talks

If you can't find a video on how to fix it on youtube, it doesn't exist. We have learned from youtube videos countless times. My husband is excellent at any kind of dyi, and watched a video last month in order to properly fix our dryer. We ordered the part off Amazon and it was fixed within 2 days. Youtube is brilliant.

Ringsender2 · 17/01/2021 23:47

Great starting post, OP. Really upbeat and can-do!

I can't think of anything at the moment, but waiting to hear some more cool things.

I forgot two - laying a cobbled path, and laying a turf lawn

I learnt to knit on youtube. Not an expert but I can make a rather nice hat.

My next challenge is to learn watercolours! So excited. I have the paints and started but realised my paint brushes aren't right so back to ordering again.

Craig Philips has excellent how to diy videos. I didn't know who he was until after I showed my husband a video of his tiling tutorial (I am not from the UK).

I've fixed my phone screen after watching a YouTube video and fixed my Henry Hoover. I love YouTube!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2021 23:52

My favourite one was how to get a pop up tent back into its small bag.

Witchend · 17/01/2021 23:55

Definitely. I'll never forget when ds (aged about 6yo) wanted me to come and take notes for a demonstration he wanted to follow on you-tube.
It was called "How to build a nuclear submarine".
When I expressed disquiet at the thought of building one he told me not to worry: "It's a very little one-only about 20m long."

I just taught myself how to cut hair from YouTube. The family no longer look like yetis.

formerbabe · 17/01/2021 23:56

Yeah I love it.

I get lots of recipes off YouTube.

I've also learnt how to decorate a room, lots of arts and crafts, hairstyles

AugustRose · 17/01/2021 23:57

I've learned so many things from youtube! It's a joke (positive) in our house that if something needs fixed I'll check youtube then try it.

Some of the things I've done are:
Changed a cooker element
Checked parts on the boiler and sorted what I can
Fixed bits on my car
Learned to crochet
Updated my cake decorating skills
PC maintenance

Many more. I think the important thing is to know your limits, like the boiler, for safety. Although at my old house (rented) the plumber showed me a few things I could check to temporarily fix it if he couldn't get there :)

Youtube is one of my 'can't live withouts'

heathergem · 17/01/2021 23:59

I watch piano playing tutorials on YouTube, it's a great way to learn.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 17/01/2021 23:59

Yep! I love YouTube. It’s currently helping me sleep by playing me ASMR videos. There is no limit to its uses.

IdblowJonSnow · 18/01/2021 00:00

Untrue. I am completely incapable of doing posh or complex hairdos on either me or my DDs. I've tried so many times.

I am pretty incompetent though tbf!

littleloopylou · 18/01/2021 00:02

YouTube is brilliant but it actually failed me when I was looking for IKEA disassembly instructions!

(Fortunately figured it out on my own after much trial and error).

I agree with your general premise though. Have you tried it for toy unboxing videos? This is also very helpful.

Sparklingbrook · 18/01/2021 00:02

I watched one yesterday that taught you to land a 747. I am all set now. 😀

Itsamess8456 · 18/01/2021 00:04

I hadn't thought of hair cutting! Ds9 looks like a shaggy dog at the moment.

Absolutely... I fitted my own cat flap, using a jigsaw for the first time in my life. A small thing but really empowering!

Beecham · 18/01/2021 00:05

Finally learnt how to thread my sewing machine and wind the bobbin thanks to YouTube!

I have learned how to fix stuck thermostatic radiator valves and to replace toilet seats

Sparklingbrook · 18/01/2021 00:13

Sorry it’s a 737 (important) here it is if anyone needs it for future reference.

In other news I did fix a problem on my Dads iPhone after watching a YouTube tutorial.

The man on Grand Designs last week virtually built the whole barn conversion with no experience by watching YouTube tutorials.

umpteennamechanges · 18/01/2021 00:18

Nowhere near as adventurous but....

  • Replacing / fixing a toilet seat with the hidden fixings
  • Securing a wobbly kitchen tap
  • Putting up curtain rails
  • Various arts and crafts stuff including getting a 1915 hand crank Singer sewing machine going
4Minions2CallMyOwn · 18/01/2021 00:48

Oh my gosh OP I know what you mean!!!

I’ve been a rubbish cook my whole life. I’m from another culture but was never taught how to make the dishes and have been so sad about it. Last week I discovered U Tube tutorials on how to cook, step by step and was blown away!!! I’m now creating new authentic dishes from my heritage that I never dreamed of (made two this weekend) and am so so thrilled Smile
