OK - I suppose not everything. I am not a natural DIY'er but by following instructions on you tube, I have:

Changed a car battery
Changed a battery on a tablet
Changed a broken laptop screen
Replaced the washing machine belt (although I will never do that again)
Built an outside pizza oven

I'm amazed at the zillions of "how to" videos on there. Does anyone else find YouTube as incredibly handy as me? Anyone else had successes?

Yes! I found videos on how to make paper boats and hats as I had forgotten how Grin

Also good for gardening stuff like pruning correctly and i use it a lot for cooking.

Lurleene · 18/01/2021 00:55

Every six months YouTube reminds me how to change the clock on my oven as I am incapable of remembering the correct steps.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 18/01/2021 01:01

I de-boned a chicken thanks to YouTube the other day. Not quite as exciting or adventurous as some of you but I was pretty pleased.

A very nice man taught me how to change the waste overflow pipe on the bath and how to seal it up so it doesn't degrade so quickly again. I felt like a proper tradesperson. If I'd have kept watching the playlist I'd have learned how to do the whole bathroom.

Rummikub · 18/01/2021 01:09

Fixed my flooded dishwasher by watching a you tube video.
Dd learnt to crochet.
Didn’t realise that unis put talk on there.

PawPawNoodle · 18/01/2021 01:12

oh I forgot, Steve-o (of Jackass fame) put a video up about how he used to traffic drugs internationally so.. I guess I learned how to do that too?

pawivy · 18/01/2021 01:22

Change the battery in car key fob

Loads of baby stuff
Isofix
Wearing a sling
Car seat adjustment
Pram collapsing when I borrowed one and forgot what to do

I’ve always said as a single parent of 16 years I’d have been seriously screwed without Youtube instructional vids. It’s been my saviour and is my first port of call when I need to know how to do something. From threading fishing rods to unblocking pipes to teaching driving. All the DIY and home maintenance over the years. I search up review vids when I need to make a purchase and love to watch make-up tutorials, I find them so relaxing. I also get all my exercise vids off Youtube too, from kettlebells to yoga/pilates to splits training. Even done my own physio. There’s nothing on earth you can’t find a tutorial on and I must’ve saved a small fortune.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 18/01/2021 01:46

I’ll be amazed if they can tell me how to retune and store my car radio stations! I don’t know what sort of deviant psycho makes something so prevalent so difficult.

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/01/2021 01:47

You Tube is my go-to for fixing anything, and I've used and bookmarked enough to make a DIY household manual. But something that really bugs me is how long some people can spin out a tutorial. The smiley, upbeat welcome, the introductory explanation, the unnecessary waffle and the absolute age it takes some You Tubers to show you every single tool you'll need. 20 mins to show you how to change a bloody tap washer, the first 5 of which was the intro.

I have to admit I prefer written instructions with clear pictures sometimes.

CommanderBurnham · 18/01/2021 01:51

The most recent for me is turkey at Christmas..

This will blow your mind though, and it does work (well it did earlier today)

If you put a dash - right here like this ; yout-ube

the ads disappear. Try it.

CommanderBurnham · 18/01/2021 01:52

Sorry has be done on the url of the video you want to watch.

Dd and I learnt how to juggle from YouTube during the April lockdown

Making an omelette, courtesy of Delia Smith.
Cooking a turkey.
I think risotto will be my next cooking thing.
Reviews of things before we buy.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 18/01/2021 04:41

I’ve learnt how to fillet a fish from YouTube, and sort out a myriad of error messages coming from our dishwasher.

LoveFall · 18/01/2021 05:56

I learned how to make handmade cards, using stamps, amazing paper, copic markers, die cutting etc. I also learned how to do basic watercolour painting. I have produced 100s of cards for friends and family, and donated many to charity and raised money.

Kept me sane, and watercolour how to videos have also lulled me to sleep.

I know DH has even fixed our TV remote based on Youtube instruction.

LoveFall · 18/01/2021 05:57

Forgot. Of course, sourdough bread!

OutingMyDog · 18/01/2021 06:03

My ex learnt how to unlock a combination padlock on one of those giant motorbike chains without the code on YouTube. It was ours, we'd just forgotten the code. It turned out to be the date of our wedding 😄

Pluckedpencil · 18/01/2021 06:31

Great topic!! I learnt to play the ukeleke, crochet and remove the top of a dishwasher to fit in under the counters! I also use it a lot as a translator to understand how to pronounce complex words and acronyms that I've never heard of before.
I must say, the only rival to YouTube in terms of helpful practical advice is Mumsnet!!

FloorLamp · 18/01/2021 06:41

It's my first place to go and my first recommendation for anyone wanted to know how to do things! There's a video for everything you didn't even know you needed to learn 😆

TwirpingBird · 18/01/2021 06:51

YES! When we bought our house we were so broke so DH did so much by youtube videos. My DHs father is also a handyman after being made redundant from his office job, and he learned everything on youtube!

DH has fixed pipes, blocked up and plastered over fireplaces (DH is a gas engineer so he could safely cap it off), laid loft flooring, fixed a broken washing machine, installed a bath and a shower, installed a loft ladder, all by youtube videos. He is now learning how to 'properly' paint the kitchen with professional tips. Youtube has saved us a fortune!

Theredjellybean · 18/01/2021 06:58

I removed and then plumbed in new washing machine in first lockdown curtesy of YouTube.. While dp watched muttering about trying to get someone in to do it etc etc..
I then went on a removed and plumbed in new toilet...
I was so proud.. Might watch tiling one now as would love to do that.

WunWun · 18/01/2021 07:07

I'd love to learn how to remove the tiles from my downstairs toilet and make it good for painting without ruining it.

Oblomov20 · 18/01/2021 07:11

Agree. Ds1 maintains that if you can't find a video of it on YouTube it isn't worth knowing.

Even Dh and I gave seen complicated videos on how to change bits on central heating, car parts, washing machine repairs.
