You can learn to do anything by watching YouTube videos!

OK - I suppose not everything. I am not a natural DIY'er but by following instructions on you tube, I have:

Changed a car battery
Changed a battery on a tablet
Changed a broken laptop screen
Replaced the washing machine belt (although I will never do that again)
Built an outside pizza oven

I'm amazed at the zillions of "how to" videos on there. Does anyone else find YouTube as incredibly handy as me? Anyone else had successes?

I do use a lot of youtube videos actually, When DH car service light was on, it showed us how to turn it off. (It had been serviced the week before but they forgot to reset the service counter)
I also learnt microsoft office shortcuts on there. It's great!

PurBal · 18/01/2021 07:16

Replace the thermostat on our built in oven!

Covidcovid · 18/01/2021 07:19

Absolutely. Things I have done due to YouTube.

Did the conveyancing for selling a house I’d inherited so saved on solicitors fees. The land registry have a great video.

Changed the dashboard cluster on my daughter’s ancient car as the speedo wasnt working.

Loads of repairs on my car.

Clipping chickens wings.

I’ll try anything if there’s a YouTube video.

Cut my sons hair with clippers and scissors yesterday, following a you tube video! Looks much better than it did before (although I’ll cut it even better next time)

hellolittlebaby · 18/01/2021 07:31

Sewing
Reressurise boiler
A few diy bits to do with painting, screwdriver etc

I'm sure there's more... they're so handy!

AerisAsh · 18/01/2021 07:44

I had a leaking toilet cistern which was old and getting worse. I watched videos of how to plumb a new one on you tube and I bought a new one from Amazon. It did take me a good few hours and some trial and error but I have done it.

I also changed my kitchen cupboard doors and used you tube to see how to fit them properly

There's some great help on there.

picklemewalnuts · 18/01/2021 07:45

Crochet
A valve thing on the toilet
The catch on the dishwasher
We're mid job on the oven element- the part is arriving tomorrow, we may have knackered the screws...

We didn't attempt the washing machine- it was ten years old, and we couldn't work out what the likeliest cause was so...

citygirlinwellies · 18/01/2021 09:53

@ErrolTheDragon

My favourite one was how to get a pop up tent back into its small bag.
Ditto Grin

I have to admit I prefer written instructions with clear pictures sometimes.

So do I, for many things.

mummabear74 · 18/01/2021 10:43

I changed all the handles on my UPVC windows. Didn't even know it was possible until I saw someone on Instagram do it so I watched a couple of YouTube videos and popped down to screwfix. Incredibly easy once I knew how and saved a fortune as we were going to replace the windows.

TillyTopper · 18/01/2021 10:45

Yes definitely! Actually 2 late teen DS introduced it! For ages I thought it was ppl posting crap, then was enlightened. Now, every week I do Russian lessons and then back up with free youtube videos - so useful! I also tried some embroidery during lockdown and found some excellent videos of how to do the stitching. We also found out how to redo our brick patio (weeding it then refilling the gaps again). You are right - tons of things there!

GavsCloakOfInvisibility · 18/01/2021 10:46

*Changing the heating element of the condenser-dryer
*Re-pressurising the boiler (was particularly proud of this one as husband stomped around stressfully - I watched the video, went in and calmly fixed it - my teens found it hilarious)

  • How they do the piano / falling lights thing on piano videos, like on MusicalBasics (will link so you can see what I mean). I can't play the piano or have the software though. At least that itch to know has been scratched though.
rosie561 · 18/01/2021 10:58

I love this thread.

I have threaded my sewing machine
Repressurized the boiler
Changed the handles on the UPVC French doors
Correctly fluffed the Christmas tree

I'm hoping to learn how to French plait my hair next!

ErrolTheDragon · 18/01/2021 11:03

I learned how to reliably and quickly germinate citrus pips from a teenage boy.

Knotaknitter · 18/01/2021 11:41

I changed the locks, mended the dodgy bathroom light, fixed the handle on the window, correctly assembled a bathroom cabinet (the drawer wouldn't close because the assembly instructions missed out something crucial), cut my hair, my son's and my mother's to acceptable standards. I've also looked at videos and decided that it's time to call a professional once I've seen what's involved.

When there's nothing on tv I watch hour long videos of people living in Alaska (how to butcher a moose was interesting if not relevant) or building cabins in the back of beyond.

Crankley · 18/01/2021 13:10

Sparklingbrook
I watched one yesterday that taught you to land a 747. I am all set now. 😀

It should be obligatory viewing for anyone getting on a plane. Smile

I love youtube too but a friend sent me a link to what we both think is the most boring video, and there's more than one of them!

peak2021 · 18/01/2021 13:12

Never used You Tube for instruction on anything. Use it mainly for travel research and listening to music.

LazyFace · 18/01/2021 13:20

I've made curtains watching youtube videos (including putting weights in corners etc.).
Learnt how to take apart and repurpose pallets, various furniture painting techniques, cutting my hair.

sometimes I don't have the patience for the self obsessed blurb in some of the videos though and just use google.

I've hacked a CD player using online instructions though to be able to play the American coded DVDs I have.

IDontMindMarmite · 18/01/2021 13:53

I agree, we've learned so much stuff from YouTube, it's an amazing resource

RainbowRaine · 18/01/2021 14:09

Replaced the washing machine belt (although I will never do that again)

Same! It took hours and I cut my hands to bits.

MrsBobDylan · 18/01/2021 14:28

I'm with ya op! If YouTube was around in 1992 I wouldn't have bothered with University.

MrsBobDylan · 18/01/2021 14:57

Oh God I just watched the bag folding one and enjoyed it. YouTube helped me uncover my inner nerd...I did a creative arts degree when all I clearly wanted to achieve in life was how to fold a bag for life in a nifty manner. I have loved a wasted life...

SlothWithACloth · 18/01/2021 15:01

I love YouTube. Recently I have
Fixed my washing machine
Fixed my dryer
Sorted out some tech issues
Learn to cut hair including my own
Painted some lovely pictures
Origami with dd
Advice on how to get through covid (vitamins, breathing exercise, hot herbal drinks)

Needhelp101 · 18/01/2021 15:07

I learnt how to breast feed lying down from YouTube. Came in very handy in those newborn days/nights Grin

NeedToKnow101 · 18/01/2021 15:12

Yes! Well my DP more; he's obsessed. He has learnt how to fly, how to cook beef Jamaican patties, how sushi and all sorts of other Japanese and Asian dishes are made.

We have used it to troubleshoot and fix car problems and to learn how to cut hair.
Both use it for work; him for music production techniques, and me for learning strategies and technologies.
Oh recently I fixed a plug socket in the wall from it.
