Welsh people who don't have a welsh accent?

So I'm dating someone who is from Cardiff. He doesn't have a welsh accent? Maybe a few words, but he says that people from Cardiff don't sound Welsh. Especially if their parents are professionals etc

Is he having a laugh? What about Gavin & Stacey? Isn't that set near Cardiff?

OP posts:

Im North Wales and speak Welsh. I have a very strong accent. And especially when I speak English-which isnt every day.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2021 14:19

It's also not real.

PurplePansy05 · 17/01/2021 14:19

😂

MajesticWhine · 17/01/2021 14:20

Why would he lie about it?

ooohbriefcase · 17/01/2021 14:20

Cardiff doesn't tend to have a strong welsh accent. The vale of Glamorgan, most don't sound like the gavin and Stacy cast. South Wales is no where near as welshy as up north wales. The further up the valleys you go the stronger the accent gets. I think more people actually speak Welsh up there too than down south.

PurplePansy05 · 17/01/2021 14:20

I'm living for the responses from my fellow Welshies from the Welsh threads on here 🍿

OP, you've given me a good laugh already!

DMCWelshcakes · 17/01/2021 14:21

I'm from Cardiff. I don't have a Welsh accent.

I think it's because I've learned a number of languages. When I speak Welsh I sound Welsh.

I'm also a professional who went to public school, so that will have made a difference.

Gavin and Stacey is set in Barry so it's a different accent.

WeeDangerousSpike · 17/01/2021 14:22

I had a colleague who was from Wales, and spoke Welsh.
Literally the only word she had a Welsh accent on was 'wales'. I had no idea she was Welsh until it came up in conversation after a couple of years working together. Do you think he's lying about being Welsh? It's a bit weird to think anyone would do that, surely?

SquigglePigs · 17/01/2021 14:23

I know someone from North Wales and he doesn't have any accent at all. Different areas are different.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 17/01/2021 14:23

Stacey is Barry island which is very different from Cardiff.

My DP spent most of his formative years in North wales and can speak welsh and has no accent whatsoever. Nor does my aunt born and bred in Swansea. Or my uncle who has live just outside Cardiff for about 30 years.

My DM , DF and other aunt all still have accents though but some cousins don't (who still live there but went to school in Germany and the states for a period of time) and some do.

You can't always tell.

Some in Cardiff have a strong accent , some middling and some have very little.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2021 14:24

Gavin and Stacey needed the accents to differentiate the Welsh from the Essex Lot.

Watto1 · 17/01/2021 14:24

I’m Welsh without much of an accent. I live in south east Wales. The accent just isn’t particularly strong around here. And very few of the cast of Gavin and Stacey have Cardiff accents!

Guardsman18 · 17/01/2021 14:24

Stacey's accent isn't a Barry one. How can someone have no accent at all? It'll be something surely?

Thack · 17/01/2021 14:25

Cardiff isn't the most Welsh sounding.

I'm always surprised when people from London don't sound Cockney? Surely it should be like living in a Guy Richie film around there??

Cherrysoup · 17/01/2021 14:25

I think most people I met in Cardiff-taught there for 2 years-DO have an accent. It’s not as strong as elsewhere, but it’s definitely there. Saying that, my home town is renowned for the strong accent but I don’t have an accent. Nobody knows where I’m from and people always say ‘Oh, but you don’t have an accent’ like it’s obligatory. 😂

Guardsman18 · 17/01/2021 14:26

Have a listen to Frank Hennessey!

bigbluebus · 17/01/2021 14:26

I spent the first 24 years of my life in North Wales and do not have a Welsh accent - or indeed any accent.

tinselearedcow · 17/01/2021 14:26

You're right! Cardiff people don't sound at ALL Welsh, unless they live in HA or council properties of course.

What a strange OP this is.

NotDavidTennant · 17/01/2021 14:26

The Cardiff accent does differ a bit from the rest of South Wales. It doesn't go up and down as much and has more of a nasal quality.

None of the Gavin & Stacy actors are from Cardiff, so the way they speak is not reflective of the Cardiff accent at all.

Aelfrid · 17/01/2021 14:27

You're absolutely right, he sound like a fake Welshman. See if you can get a sneak peek at his phone for photos of his mum - she should be wearing a tall black hat and a shawl. And his dad should be covered in coaldust at all times, unless he's covered in mud from playing rugby.

lunalucie · 17/01/2021 14:28

Cardiff people have totally different accents compared to other parts of Wales. I've noticed they don't have a distinguishable accent, the people I work with from Cardiff could be from anywhere in the U.K. because they don't sound Welsh at all. Saying that I have a strong Welsh accent so I probably wouldn't notice if they've got a mild one.

GreenSlide · 17/01/2021 14:28

Well you must have some kind of an accent. Do you mean you have an English accent?
Guardsman18 · 17/01/2021 14:28

Oops. Think I've misunderstood. You meant Welsh accent?

Toilenstripes · 17/01/2021 14:30

My husband was raised in Cardiff and doesn’t have a Welsh accent but his parents, from Port Talbot and Swansea both have accents. I love the Welsh accent.
