What do you do when listening to podcasts?

Random musing for a Saturday evening but podcasts - how/ when do you listen to them ?

I have several I'd like to hear but I can't quite fathom how it works - do I sit on the sofa and listen to them instead of watching tv? That feels weird to me because do I just sit still staring into space?

In bed ? In the bath ?

Walking to work (1h each way). Cleaning or cooking

Sheleg · 16/01/2021 22:38

I listen to them while out walking with DD in the sling. I keep one earbud out so I can hear if she squeals!

I listen when I am cleaning, cooking or folding laundry.

Just like audiobooks. My car journeys even pre covid are short school run type things, so not enough time to get into a podcast then.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/01/2021 22:50

They help me settle down to sleep.

Can I ask, those that listen when they are doing tasks shorted than the podcast - do you listen to it in stages ?

So you listen to the radio OP? If so, when?

Kote · 16/01/2021 23:09

I never just sit and listen to one - always have to be doing something else. Usually when doing housework, walking to work or getting ready in the morning.

supercee · 16/01/2021 23:11

When I go out for a walk or in the bath, not podcasts though but audiobooks. I used to get really bored in the bath.

WiseOwlRelaxing · 16/01/2021 23:12

I really love going for a walk listening to a podcast or an audible.

damekindness · 16/01/2021 23:15

I listen to podcasts as I go to sleep. I've listened to the first 7 minutes of countless podcasts 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, I listen to mine on Spotify.

It will remember where I stopped and I just restart it from there the next time. However, I listen to them quite regularly so most times I can remember what the podcast was about.

Imagiraffe · 16/01/2021 23:23

Sorry to be totally ignorant but how do I find a podcast I'd like. I've no idea how they work. I like the idea of listening to something interesting while I walk. I've never understood where to find them and am too embarrassed to ask irl. God im getting old!

Do you have Spotify? Go on their podcast section and it'll give you a list with all the categories. Have a look at some of the topics which might interest you. Are you passionate about any subject in particular? Type that on search and see what comes up.

Some stuff on there is amazing, there is also a lot of crap. You can always start with something like amazing discoveries or unresolved mysteries - general culture and history topics.

DuzzyFuck · 16/01/2021 23:30

Do you have an iPhone @Imagiraffe? iPhones have their own podcast app. Otherwise you can listen on Spotify or Google. You can just search by anything that interests you, you'll find podcasts on just about any topic you can think of.

I listen to a lot of true crime, some funny stuff, one that a friend does, some about tv shows I watch, documentaries, theres a couple about mumsnet(!) etc.

Some are awful, some are great. Some presenters I just can't listen to regardless of content, some I really enjoy. It's a case of trying and experimenting until you find your thing.

Imagiraffe · 16/01/2021 23:32

I don't have Spotify is that what I need EileenGC?

Youngatheart00 · 16/01/2021 23:32

I listen in bed. Half the time I fall asleep mid episode, half the time I’m a bit too interested and get through to the end of an episode but then fall asleep quite easily afterwards as find them very relaxing.

shhsecretsquirrel · 16/01/2021 23:33

Driving cooking cleaning. Original

Imagiraffe · 16/01/2021 23:35

How do I go about searching through Google Duzzyfuck ? I think that's the platform I'll have to use. I like true crime also science stuff, nature and animals maybe some comedy.

I use Acast.

The first podcast I got into was the Serial ones. Season 1 had me hooked.

FreeButtonBee · 16/01/2021 23:37

Cleaning is an excellent way to listen. Was practically a pleasure to dust and mop floors today. I used to listen on my commute but !!COVID!! so no northern line for me at the moment.

EileenGC · 16/01/2021 23:37

You don't necessarily need Spotify. That's what I use as I like having all my music and podcasts together.

You can use one of the free apps that have been suggested, I'll add Stitcher which I sometimes use too.

Any of these should have a search button or a categories menu. Type anything that is of interest to you and see what comes up.

FreeButtonBee · 16/01/2021 23:39

And if you love reading them a quadruple recommend backlisted. It is amazing. And has resulted in me spending about £200 on books in the last 3 months. And made me so happy
