Recommend me a witchy magic-y book?

Just finished Ninth House (Leigh Bardugo). I'm not usually into sci fi and fantasy but it's been good escapism and now I'm wondering about other books I might like. I like magic, spells, witchy stuff set in the normal universe I guess. I enjoyed Neil Gaiman too. No idea where to go next though! I looked at A Discovery of Witches but the reviews on Amazon were a bit rubbish. Would love to be pushed in the right direction.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, though recent books aren’t as good.

The Thirteenth Witch by Mark Hayden

The Night Raven by Sarah Painter

Also completely agree with previous poster about the Chronicles of St Mary’s. Best series ever though time travel rather than witches. Starts with Just One Damned Thing After Another.

And personally I absolutely love A Discovery of Witches, just rereading it at the moment after watching the second series (and I binged season 1 before that).

Oh the st Mary's books definitely give you a brilliant world to get lost in. I long to live there.

I read Crooked Daylight by Helen Slavin recently. That was pretty good, about some witchy sisters.

Garth Nix 'The Old Kingdom' series (starts with Sabriel). I've just greedied up the lot and loved them. I also am not usually into sci-fi.

I need to get a new dog and cat so I can call them Kibeth and Mogget.

Agree with lots of these! Ben aaronovitch and Terry pratchett if you like Neil gaiman,

Surprised no one has suggested the gilded cage trilogy by Vic James, loved them!

Faster800 · 16/01/2021 15:52

For those who like st Mary's books try Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series (starting with the Eyre affair) brilliant!

Such great recommendations, thank you! I have a whole list to keep me going now! I just have to decide which first...

I've bought the first of the St Mary's books thanks to this thread. Thank you! Flowers

I absolutely love the Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J Maas. More fairies than witches but really fabulous books

Naomi Novik is excellent. Lots of good suggestions on here.
Has Bridget Collins been suggested yet? The Binding and The Betrayals.
Not witchy but somewhat "other" you might like Natasha Pulley. They are beautiful books.

Currently reading EEHolmes Spirit Prophecy, the 2nd in a series of 3. It’s about a Uni student who discovers she is part of a Gateway, meaning spirits cross to the other side through her. Really very reasonable.
