Recommend me a witchy magic-y book?

Just finished Ninth House (Leigh Bardugo). I'm not usually into sci fi and fantasy but it's been good escapism and now I'm wondering about other books I might like. I like magic, spells, witchy stuff set in the normal universe I guess. I enjoyed Neil Gaiman too. No idea where to go next though! I looked at A Discovery of Witches but the reviews on Amazon were a bit rubbish. Would love to be pushed in the right direction.

Trudi Canavan's Black Magician trilogy. Not set in this world but it's very good. She wrote follow ups but I wasn't as keen on those.

YY to Ben Aaronovitch, also Charlaine Harris is a lovely writer. More Vampires, clairvoyants than witches but set in the real world.
I am Irish and couldn't cope with the Nora Roberts set in Ireland, it was just so cringe!
But if you don't know Ireland it's probably fine.
I loved all the US set Nora Roberts but maybe people from Montana etc think they are cringe Smile
Also if you are willing to branch out into sci-fi/fantasy Lois McMaster Bujold is a very good writer. Character focused rather than engineering.

Sanctuary by VV James is great

Witchlight is wonderful

blinkboo · 14/01/2021 23:13

I agree about Merrily watkins series. Also try the chronicles of st Mary's? I didn't love Ben aaronovitch but can see why some would.

The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs is really good
I also like the Toby Daye series by Seanan McGuire

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and The Ladies of Grace Adieu, both by Susanna Clarke.

You might like some of Angela Carter’s magical realism, especially Nights at the Circus and Wise Children.

I'm watching the 2nd Discovery of Witches series as I type - its watchable but I prefered season 1.

I like the Diana Wynn Jones books - although they are for children.

Terracottasaur · 15/01/2021 01:17

The Bear and the Nightingale series

I haven’t but I will put it on my list. I really liked Erin Morganstern’s writing style

InvisibleToEveryone · 15/01/2021 22:23

House of Night series is fairly easy reading.

It's meant to be a teen range but I quite liked it.

Marvelina · 15/01/2021 22:30

I want a magic world to get lost in. Has anybody read Christelle Dabos? Thought I might give The Mirror Visitor books a go

I love Sarah Addison Allen, her books are a real soul lifter.
Sarah Painter is great too. I’m really enjoying her Crow Investigations series atm.
My absolute favourite is TheSt Mary’s Chronicles by Jodi Taylor. They’re time travel not magic, but they are fantastic. I’ve read & reread all of them!
Dave Turner is also a fun read.

KilljoysDutch · 16/01/2021 14:08

If you haven't you should read Leigh Bardugos other books. The grisha series is very magical and witchy. 6 of crows is less magical but is also amazing. They're getting a netflix show in March and I can't wait to dive back into that world.

Marvelina · 16/01/2021 14:10

Ooh I thought they were for teens so I didn't consider but I'll look now!

Some of the best fantasy books I’ve read are young adult. Dont discard them.
