I can't imagine any living soul on the planet had the best Christmas ever this year.
I’m going to have to disabuse you of that.
Normally go to parents, as the unfavoured child it’s normally spent listening to a long list of my various faults, compared to my sisters dazzling achievements.
This year, at the last minute, parents decided they didn’t want to risk it, and would only be having my sister and her family round.
So we stayed home. Our DD, and brand new grandson came, along with her partner and six year old stepson (H). The lounge was filled with presents and the look on H’s face when he saw the huge sack for him was brilliant. It’s been a long time since we had kids around for Xmas.
The whole day was spent with people that actually like, no, love me, and no one criticised or ridiculed anything I said or did.
After DD and family went home DH and I sat and drank wine and set the world to rights, the cleaning up waited till the next day. Normally mother would be playing the martyr, cleaning up while simultaneously refusing offers of help.
I was actually upset when DM told me we were uninvited, but to be honest, I want to do the same again next year, it was fab. DD said the same. Just have to work out how to tell mother now. No doubt I’ll be the bad guy splitting the family in two.
