When did your late walker walk

Hi,

DD is in no hurry to walk, shes 15months and is still in no hurry to walk independently. She'll walk holding my finger and on the sofa, she can stand up and dance unaided. But she will only sometimes take a step and then fall over.

Just wondered when other late walkers started walking? DS was walking before his first birthday so I assumed she would be the same

18 months. Weirdly on the day she did it she also did the moonwalk whilst shuffling her shoulders and if we hadn't been with family I would have thought that I was hallucinating!

2years and 2 days. He started bum shuffling around 1yo, starting pulling himself up, climbing on furniture and cruising at 18m, crawling at 19m, and walking with supports (holding hands or pushing a walker) at 20m.
Then 2 days after he 2nd birthday he pulled himself up on a chair and started walking across the room whilst we were watching tv. We were so happy and shocked. He had been under physio for not walking but they felt the reason he didn't walk is he just wasn't ready. No medical reason. He's now 3.5 and is constantly running away from me.

Lots of people have mentioned their late walkers just suddenly walking as though they'd been doing it forever, and skipping the wobbly/teetering stage.
Dd was exactly the same, it's like she was waiting until she knew she could do it properly

This was definitely the case with my two, they just didn't want to take the chance till they were sure they could do it. They still do a thorough risk assessment of playgrounds before giving anything a go. I'm the only mum who's yet to have to take a child to A&E. They're extraordinarily physically cautious.

Ds1 was 17 months, he was a bottom shuffler and never crawled. And personality wise he's just very cautious! I walked at 9 months apparently so I was quite worried about it at the time but he's absolutely fine.

18 months. She was also a bum shuffler. We found out about a year later that she has very poor eyesight and is long sighted with a lazy eye, so i think that’s why she walked so late. She’s fine now and walks, runs, climbs and dances etc, just can’t see too well without her glasses

19 months. She just wasn’t that bothered by it! Much older now, no problem.

I should add there were no health issues with the 2 late walkers, they were just "late"!

22 months. Was a bottom shuffler. Subsequently diagnosed with low muscle tone but just within the normal range also some rotation in pelvic girdle. Explains why she never liked climbing ladders, swimming and riding a bike. Now in her twenties and has good career . Still does not like ladders, bikes and swimming. We did get her doing tumble tots which was a great help

This is all so reassuring. DS is only 14 months but has shown no inclination to walk. He can stand for a short time but immediately grabs someone/something if he feels even a little wobble. I think it's a confidence issue.

17 months, but is now the most active out of all of mine!

18 months. Never walked, did a knee shuffle. She was a funny little thing.
Now 10 years old and not very coordinated or sporty, but very cerebral. She's differently wired to most kids.

Opps, I mean, she never CRAWLED. She walks, obviously, since the post is about walking.

28 months. Bum shuffler. Did go to physio but no problem found. Now a physical 13 year old. Also when he walked he just got up and walked like he had always done

17 months, good crawler though and the first time he stood independently I cried out in surprise & frightened the poor bugger so he promptly sat back down! He's now 17 years old and just been on a muddy hour long walk with me today bless him.

16 months, which is not as old as some, but she’s incredibly hypermobile and possibly dyspraxic. Still behind with gross motor skills at 5.

20 months! He was 7 weeks premmy.

Both of mine were 15/16 months. DS is still not very co-ordinated. He came last in the whole class race on sports day. DD on the other hand is a competitive athlete and regularly wins regional competitions.
