can any of you ladies advise me on how long you had to wait between being told you were to have a hysterectomy until having the procedure getting done? please.

Two weeks for me, but I had endometrial cancer. That was in June last year. I have no idea how long the waiting list is for non urgent cases, although when I was in hospital, women were still having the op for other reasons. My trust kept doing gynae surgery regardless. It might be different now that the pandemic is raging again though.

I went privately and it was two weeks - I had been told the NHS waiting list was up to a year. That was five years ago.

I had a hysteroscopy 4 weeks ago which failed , I am still heavily bleeding . doctor said he wanted to discuss a hysterectomy at an appointment I have on Wednesday , ive fought 16 months to get to this point and I just cant go on much longer like this , I know we are all locked in again and its just as well as I am terrified to go out incase the usual happens and the bleeding is so heavy its running down my legs at times . sorry to be blunt but its just the way it is .

At my NHS consultant appointment he opened his diary and gave me a date less than 2 weeks later. I couldn't get my head round that and opted for a later date about a month later. It was 2001 so the details are hazy.

ive looked into the private thing but im afraid its just out of my range and I really don't want to spend all of my savings on it.
if you don't mind me asking how much did u pay ? I was told£8,500

Not long, think it was 8 weeks for the pre med and then operation the following week. Hope you don't have to wait too long Op, having mine changed my life, had awfully long and heavy periods before.

fabulous , I cannot wait honestly just want this over with so fingers crossed mine might do just that .

It was 12 weeks between the appointment with gynaecologist and getting an appointment which was 2 weeks after so 14 weeks in total. However for various reasons my gynaecologist wanted to make sure i was on his list and not the general surgery list and he was on holiday for 3 weeks so it would have been 11 weeks from appointment to op.

to explain further ive been constantly bleeding now for 16 months , I have had enough

My consultant told me three weeks ago the current wait list is 12-18months nhs and up to 16 weeks privately

That was in 2019

It was through insurance (couldn't have afforded it myself) - total cost was about £6500. Each of the people involved has a separate bill, e.g. anaesthetist, surgeon so it may very depending on the details and complexity of the operation.

it sure is expensive and I do kinda have enough but when I've paid national insurance my whole life then why should I use my savings to fund it :(

I'm really praying they don't put me on a new waiting list as its not my fault previous op failed , I have already waited 16 months to get to here and I just cant go on much further like this , its draining the life from me .

Yes, constant bleeding is totally debilitating . You might be able to get an idea of waiting times at your Wednesday appointment - I imagine there might be a lot of local variation at the moment with the Covid situation .

I'm really hoping he will get me straight back in considering the 16 months I have already waited :(

I'm two years in too, laparoscopic surgery done but was still told another 12-18 months I have reluctantly had to go private now - seeing the exact same surgeon but having to pay £200 for another consultation with him (despite having an nhs one with him 3 weeks ago) and around £8k for the procedure

I hope where you are in the country is different and they can get you in ASAP

oh no now I'm even more worried if he tells me another waiting list I think ill go in front of the nearest bus :'(

p.s I forgot to say I'm in the UK , where are you in the world ? please please don't say UK

UK, unfortunately! I'm in Dorset if that helps/doesn't help at all.

It's shit isn't it? I've been forced to leave my job because of this, my gynae problems are slightly different to yours but same boat.
A female nurse once said to me (jokingly) that if men suffered like this they'd make gynae care a much bigger priority..

@DALMATAIN101 you have my utmost sympathy. I have had investigations for horrific bleeding and severe anemia. I was offered a hysterectomy but am opting for fibroid removal. I have insurance and was offered one immediately. I would urge you to keep calling and asking for cancellations on the NHS.
Have you been given a cause?

16 months is a long time. I bled for 6 months at a time, with a few small months between each 6 months.

@ squirtlesquad im keeping my fingers crossed best I can , I also have a few mental health issues which I've had most of my life ,adhd , ptsd and bipolar , thankfully I have the best gp who has been pushing for this to be done urgently
