What dead animal is this (photo, don’t open if squeamish)

I saw this on a walk today and couldn’t work out what it is. If I’d turned the head the right way up, I’m sure it would have been obvious but I didn’t feel like doing that.
It’s not red enough to be a fox, but I don’t think the jaw is the right shape for a badger and I think badgers noses are more black.
Any ideas? Only the head and a strip of its fur remained so no clues from the body

Maybe part of a badger. Where was it?

avocadoopear · 10/01/2021 19:51

Looks dog/fox type of animal to me, just by the shape of the nose. Poor thing, doesn't look like it had a great time.

MyGirlDaisy · 10/01/2021 19:52

Sadly I think this is the remains of a dog - although to be honest it’s sad whatever animal it is.

Looks like a dog to me. Wrong colour and muzzle shape for a fox.

Dog fighting?

Might be worth reporting to the police.

Looks like a dog to me Sad

Soubriquet · 10/01/2021 19:53

That looks like a grey fox

Prufrocks · 10/01/2021 19:53

We’re you brave enough to sort of nudge it over with your shoe? Because while I agree the shape of the snout doesn’t look badgery, the general colouration does and I can’t think of many native wild species that share that colour. A black and white stripy head would remove all doubt.

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/01/2021 19:54

I also think grey fox as head is quite pointy and overall it is on small side.

wowfudge · 10/01/2021 19:54

I think it's a squirrel.

Ansterdame · 10/01/2021 19:55

It never occurred to me that it could be a dog. I totally agree that whatever it was, it met a painful death but it somehow didn’t seem so bad when I thought it was a wild animal, as no one would be sad for it, but if it’s a dog, that means it’s or was someone’s pet. How awful

Threelionsandalioness · 10/01/2021 19:56

Pretty sure that's a dog poor thing x

Ansterdame · 10/01/2021 19:56

Def not a squirrel, it was much much bigger than that. I’m hoping it was a grey fox

OP posts:
Bunnybigears · 10/01/2021 19:57

I think it's a squirrel I would hate to meet the squirrels round your way!

Ansterdame · 10/01/2021 19:57

It’s nose does seen v pointy like a fox. Urban area too with lots of foxes about but I’ve only seen red ones before

Flaunch · 10/01/2021 19:57

It does look like a dog, I hadn’t consider that either.

Heyha · 10/01/2021 19:58

Sadly I think a dog too. Badgers have a more pointy nose end. And they're much bigger than you'd think if you'd never met one.

It is an odd colour though!

Ansterdame · 10/01/2021 19:59

Although urban, there are some small woods around so could be a badger but just don’t think it’s nose is right

OP posts:
KaptainKaveman · 10/01/2021 19:59

Fox.

HappyRaven · 10/01/2021 20:01

I think it could be a badger. Do you have a local badger group you could send the picture and location to? They could advise if its not a badger.

IHateCoronavirus · 10/01/2021 20:01

I was going to say dog too

freezingmytoesoff · 10/01/2021 20:02

I think sadly that's a dog

HappyRaven · 10/01/2021 20:04

Very sad end whatever it is.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/01/2021 20:06

I have just done some googling. Badgers have more grey on them in winter (rather than the black in summer) due to longer guard hairs showing through & can also have pink areas on the nose. It is surprising how canine the badger nose is. I think it's a badger.

user686833 · 10/01/2021 20:06

I thought it was a squirrel at first and then finally noticed the nose and mouth, it's hard to tell upside down. But I'd say it's a grey fox. There aren't many dogs with tail hair as long and bushy as that.

winterchills · 10/01/2021 20:07

I think it looks like a dog too😩😩
