Where would you live?

We're in a big city at the min but would love to move somewhere with good walking from the doorstep - we love a good rural cottage holiday somewhere scenic. So obviously all the usual touristy areas have been on our rightmove search but where else should we look? We work in education so I doubt we will struggle for work wherever we go and without a mortgage to pay we don't need to worry too much in the short term. North, south, east, wherever - inspire us!

Would recommend Rutland or Lincolnshire , plenty of house for your money and near enough to large cities should you need them.

Didiusfalco · 09/01/2021 17:26

What are your preferences in terms of weather and landscape? Do you want coastal? If you go far north it will be colder - is that a problem? Any family you need to be close to?

BiscuitTea · 09/01/2021 17:29

Warwickshire

butmumineedit · 09/01/2021 17:31

This is in a lovely part of Rutland www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/88841846

Rutland water is close by, several excellent schools so should be ok for work as a teachers .

LadyCatStark · 09/01/2021 17:31

You’d get a 5 bed for that in North Lancashire!

Blossomgate · 09/01/2021 17:31

Come to Ripon! Tiny city, with independent shops, cafes and restaurants, large county of North Yorkshire, especially great for maintained schools.
Houses walkable to the city centre, from most parts.
Riverside & canal walks from the door & Fountains Abbey.

Grammar system , but both secondary schools (1 grammar, 1 academy) are outstanding.

Plenty of local villages.
Half hourly bus to Harrogate & Leeds; from Thirsk station (15 mins drive) mainline train to London (2 hours) and Newcastle less than an hour.

yearinyearout · 09/01/2021 17:32

Northumberland coast

KumquatSalad · 09/01/2021 17:33

NE England?
Cumbria?
North Yorkshire?
Pretty much anywhere in Scotland?

Blossomgate · 09/01/2021 17:34

For instance.

Edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, the outskirts of Pickering or a nearby village. The coast isn’t far (Whitby and all the small fishing villages are beautiful.) York and Leeds are also an easy commute (although I do have a 4x4 for Winter.)

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/01/2021 17:49

I’d head up and live on the border of the Scottish Borders and South Lanarkshire, in Biggar. Nice little town, scenic, easy commute into either Glasgow or Edinburgh.

(Well, I personally wouldn’t move there because I already chose to leave - too cold and too far away from London; but if neither of those would bother you then I wholeheartedly recommend.)

TravellingSpoon · 09/01/2021 17:54

I live closeish to Rutland and would definitely go there if jobs were not an issue. I love Rutland Water - we spend a lot of time there.

IdblowJonSnow · 09/01/2021 17:55

Somewhere in yorkshire. Smile

Desmondo2016 · 09/01/2021 17:57

Definitely Devon. Without a doubt. Beaches and moors and just the best place to live in the UK imo.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 09/01/2021 17:58

Wye Valley/Forest of Dean area, beautiful and not too touristy.

QforCucumber · 09/01/2021 18:00

North Yorkshire villages/market towns. Northallerton, stokesley, yarm. You'd actually get a decent 4 bed detached here for that price - ours was 225k.

Proudpeacock · 09/01/2021 18:01

Somewhere in the Shropshire hills like Church Stretton.

PenelopeStern · 09/01/2021 18:04

We bought a 5 bed, 4 receptions with outbuildings in 2 acres for less than 350k in Lincolnshire.

Rollercoaster1920 · 09/01/2021 18:07

Where are your family and friends?

Violinist64 · 09/01/2021 18:09

Norfolk and Suffolk are lovely counties and there are a lot of three bedroom homes in villages and small towns in this price bracket.

CormoranStrike · 09/01/2021 18:15

I’d have this

Eastlands Heights, 33 Eastlands Park, Rothesay, Isle of Bute, PA20

SpudsandGravy · 09/01/2021 18:17

Forest of Bowland. Beautiful place but within easy striking distance of the motorway to go N or S, and the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales.

GuyFawkesDay · 09/01/2021 18:17

Yorkshire Dales for me

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/01/2021 18:21

I'd love to be able to walk into York city centre then drive out to the nice countryside.

AdditionalCharacter · 09/01/2021 18:23

I'd live by the sea
