The saga continues to continue with more sequels than a trilogy of trilogies...

There are loads of people desperate to work but can't, and loads more who are working but don't want to. I know it's not quite that simple, but what a fucking mess we're in.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 10/01/2021 13:25

And the frothing about Bojos press conference.....didn't he say he'd be giving regular pressers to update regarding the vaccine?

DrRamsesEmerson · 10/01/2021 13:32

He did, @LivinLaVidaLoki - daily from tomorrow.

Pleasedontdothat · 10/01/2021 13:35

I’ve just found out one of my niece’s friends killed herself last week - she was in her last year of school, bright, bubbly and seemingly with everything to live for but this latest lockdown was just too much for her. That’s the second suicide in my DD’s and her cousin’s year group since the autumn - I feel numb

DrRamsesEmerson · 10/01/2021 13:37

Oh, @Pleasedontdothat Flowers for you.

I do think young people are particularly at risk of suicide at the moment- at just the point in their lives when they ought to be exploring the world, finding their tribe, making their own mistakes, they’re stuck in their bedrooms with no end in sight.

ISaySteadyOn · 10/01/2021 13:42

@Pleasedontdothat, I am so sorry. Flowers

Lostinacloud · 10/01/2021 13:43

Just seen they are calling for nurseries to close. Ffs, people need nurseries to be able to work and surely by now any families potentially catching covid via a nursery are not going to be seeing grandparents anyway and they and their kids will be totally fine with covid in the overwhelming majority of cases. I know the Chinese style lockdown supporters would shout ‘long covid’ at me but the hard facts remain that for most under 60’s covid is no worse than a bad cold or flu, even if there is some element of post viral effect. The world has gone totally crazy and I’m sick of it.
Just have a look at scientists like Dr Clare Craig who points out numerous data and graphs which show that there are currently no excess deaths and also a severe and surprising lack of deaths from other causes that they normally see every year. This is seen across the whole of Europe too as per the attached photo comparing April 2020 and December 2020.

@Pleasedontdothat I’m so sorry Flowers It’s so tough for that age group. DS had his 18th birthday the day the first lockdown started. He rather glumly said last night that it looks like he won’t be celebrating his 19th either! He’s a pretty strong kid but has lost so much over the last year.

SirSamuelVimes · 10/01/2021 13:56

@Pleasedontdothat, oh god, what awful news. Flowers

TabbyStar · 10/01/2021 13:57

There is some excess currently, but look at 2018 where it looks the same as now for England, in fact a bit higher. Wales has an unusual spike. There are fewer deaths in the 0-14 group than normal to offset some of the older deaths, these would probably be higher through accidents etc. if we were out and about, but on the other hand are likely to be fewer in number as it's more unusual for children to die (past the birth/baby stage at least) than older people.

Hospital deaths are about the same as usual last graph I saw, its deaths in the community that are higher, and I'd bet that these are predominantly "lockdown" deaths rather than Covid deaths.

The Euromomo data is here for anyone who wants to look www.euromomo.eu/graphs-and-maps/

I wish I could step away from the research but the confused messaging troubles me and I feel I want to know the "truth". I feel I'm a bit obsessive!

Buzzinwithbez · 10/01/2021 14:04

That's a useful summary, Tabby. I'm also befuddled by all the stats that don't seem to match the messaging.
I was just about convinced that maybe there was some merit in being more scared that I am, but then found out rates are still lower than in November. No one in our town was running around in November like the sky was falling like they are now. In fact our MP voted against the lockdown.

As you lot probably know, I work in a supermarket. A lot of people don't want to be there- anxiety, worry about their kids, abuse from the public etc. We can't be furloughed, though it sucks that one part of our group is closed and staff furloughed, our part is all systems go and for some people it's a big issue. Personally speaking I'd like to be furloughed sometimes, especially when I have arseholes to deal with on a regular basis, but on the other hand I'm older and don't have young children to worry about. It's very hard dealing with people's feelings and situations, sometimes I want to scream.

Flowers for @Pleasedontdothat

The nursery thread already has some comments along the lines of "it's not going to affect women more" so leaving this here mobile.twitter.com/PregnantScrewed/status/1347817848006189056

Also the TUC have a survery on working parents

@Pleasedontdothat that is just awful news Flowers

I wish someone would sit down with BoJo and his band of merry men together with Whitty, Vallance at al, and give them the cold hard facts about just how this affecting people in terms of MH, depression etc. I want someone to really get in their faces and tell them exactly what we think. I'll do it. - Anyone with me?

TabbyStar · 10/01/2021 14:10

We're all (nearly all?) being psychologically damaged in some way, and abandoned to get on with it ourselves Thanks

Lifeinaonesie · 10/01/2021 14:11

People clamouring for nurseries to shut are crazy. What an earth do they think we'll come back to if they put every woman out of work?

DrRamsesEmerson · 10/01/2021 14:12

Back to the 1950s, I suppose, @Lifeinaonesie. I wouldn't be totally surprised if some in Government thought that a highly desirable end.

Iheartmysmart · 10/01/2021 14:17

@TabbyStar It’s great that you want to do your own research but in my humble opinion you shouldn’t feel like you have to. The government and the media should be being far more transparent. It’s like the X-Files - the truth is out there - but you have to look bloody hard for it.

Happy to join you @NeedWineNow

Does Chris Witty have any medical training? Perhaps if he doesn't someone could tell him, humans sort of need fresh air, exercise and vitamin D to stay healthy, and be able to fight off viruses effectively....never mind being social creatures we also need interaction with other humans not through a screen. God that man makes me angry, again the lyric " when iam king you will be first against the wall " seems made for him.

wanderings · 10/01/2021 14:55

Yes, I want to hear the government talking about mental health too, and ADMITTING that their lockdown is going to cause financial ruin. They are very much minimising both of these right now, because they don't want to distract from the "people will die" doommongering.

I'm enjoying winding up the lockdown zealots by posting on their threads.

ISaySteadyOn · 10/01/2021 14:57

Well, that's the thing. He doesn't see humans. Just case numbers.

He is in fact a practicing consultant apparently. You'd think he'd have a more balanced view.

No medical training whatsoever - he’s able to wander hospital wards for shits and giggles 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
Bollss · 10/01/2021 15:10

Come on now there's no need to be mean. I'd never even heard of the man before this kicked off let alone researched his qualifications. And let's face it, this government has a bad habit of employing people to do jobs they have 0 experience in, so it's not a far reach, really.
