The saga continues to continue with more sequels than a trilogy of trilogies...

There are other vaccines in development that might actually prevent disease though.

@Wilberforce42

The dementing this time is far worse than March. We’ve had to take a key worker school place for my middle son but the guilt is wieghing on me. I just cannot homeschool my secondary age son who has ADD and needs constant support and supervise my 4 year ok with global delay at the same time. It was a necessary action to keep us all sane sadly.
Don't feel guilty. A lot of us have neuro diverse children. They are all individuals with their own challenges, both for themselves and on family life. Your school onviously agree that his needs are worthy of a place. It doesn't matter what any third party thinks about that; they are not living your life.

Phew - finally finished a first draft of the essay I have due in in a couple of weeks (I like to do them early and leave them to moulder then go back to it fresh and tidy it up)... I have never had to fight so hard to do an essay - and this is one of my very very strong subjects and areas of interest - my mojo has fucked off and gone.

Waiting to hear from uni if my deferral has been accepted for placement - can't see why not - mental health breakdown, schools meltdown and all relevant staff supporting it should be viable!

TheOrchidKiller · 09/01/2021 21:10

@maggienolia
Hi all.
I discovered the secret of clearing the pavements. Walk down the road to the post box with your Covid Test Box on display.
Haha, yes! We describe my weekly test boxes as The Deadly Box of Doom. I spent months carrying them in a shopping bag, just incase anyone saw & assumed the worse. One week I arrived as the postman was emptying the post box, & I sort of threw it at him & said, "I'M NOT INFECTED!" He just shrugged.
Now I don't care who sees it.

TabbyStar · 09/01/2021 21:11

My DM has now has two doses so is pretty much as protected as she's going to be, probably hasn't got that long left but technically we're still not supposed to see her. She can't really go anywhere else though, she's too frail, so what was the point in vaccinating her if she's still living out what could be her last months alone?

TabbyStar · 09/01/2021 21:13

If you find it, can you check if mine's there too? I feel exactly the same.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/01/2021 21:17

With DS1 (who gets particular about voices... shame this does not extend to Unspeakable, Preston Playz or 2B2T... Grin ) our big survival strategy is just doing the same topic on Bitesize as he tends to accept their format. The videos are professional quality and it's more interactive. I then do copying and pasting to put the other activties into a document so he has a framework to work through. It's labour intensive though. Shame I don't get MPS6 for...or even TA!

Is it me or is Oak Academy universally as dull as ditchwater? If I find it mindnumbing, no wonder the DCs hate it!

Definitely not just you! Dd's school didn't use them last time but they are now, we've watched one maths video and it was just dire.

That's what I don't understand about this vaccine. What's the point if it doesn't free you up to go out mask-free, visit other vaccinated people, mingle etc.
Weedsnseeds1 · 09/01/2021 22:48

Thenightsky the point is to (probably) stop you being ill enough to need hospital treatment or die. Time will tell if it does more than that, I guess?
Meanwhile, there are other vacancies in development that may be more traditional, in that they stop you getting it in the first place.

dillite · 09/01/2021 22:51

So what's the point then? Because everyone seems to think that having the vaccine will mean that they will be able to return to normal life. Why bother vaccinating, if it makes no difference?

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/01/2021 23:05

It does make a difference, in that people who are vaccinated are less likely to become seriously ill, so you reduce deaths and hospitalisations.
It doesn't make a difference if we don't, at some point, have an "acceptance level", for want of a better expression, for a certain number of people getting ill, no matter how mildly.
In the initial stages of the vaccination programme, with the current vaccines, a vaccinated 90 year old could be mildly ill then give it to their unvaccinated 65 year old child, who has some chance of severe illness.
It is about where the cut off point is.

Buzzinwithbez · 09/01/2021 23:12

So I've seen lots of health professionals who've had covid confirmed by test going on to have the vaccine.
There seems even less point to that if its only going to help them have a milder version of a virus they probably have developed natural immunity to anyway.

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/01/2021 23:29

There natural immunity might be better than the vaccine, but there isn't any confirmation of how long immunity lasts as the virus hasn't been around that long, so getting the vaccine is sensible if you are in a high exposure profession and /or in a high risk group.
Based on previous coronavirus, long term immunity could be pretty good, but there isn't enough evidence yet for this one.
Also, I should add, it's not really known if someone mildly ill from a post vaccination infection could pass it on, but the assumption has to be that they might, as there isn't a lot of evidence one way or the other yet.

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/01/2021 23:29

Nobody turned up without an appointment! My 82 year old parents were there, there was a 3 hour wait & they were sent home! My mum is very vulnerable and is on oxygen for 16 hours a day, this is not the correct system for the elderly...

mightbealittlebitmad · 10/01/2021 07:42

So rumours of harsher restrictions like having everything else taken away isn't enough. Nobody will be happy until we are locked in our houses eating bread and drinking nothing but water.

I wouldn't mind so much if they gave us a short deadline of even up to 4 weeks where things were a lot stricter but I don't trust this not to go on and on. It's not healthy to keep people isolated for months on end, not exercising, living in fear of stepping outside their door incase they get arrested.

Yesterday I went for a walk with the kids, I drove 7 miles there, 7 miles back and managed to not crash the car and end up clogging up the NHS. On the way home I went through the McDonald's drive thru and we ate it at home. A couple of hours later I got back in the car to drive into town for some shopping. It was non essential but the shop was open so if it's open I'm going. Saw a handful of people the entire time, everywhere is deadly quiet.

Not sure where people are going that they are seeing hoardes of people, some of the places I've been have been busy but not so jam packed it's impossible to pass them at a sensible distance.

TabbyStar · 10/01/2021 07:48

the point is to (probably) stop you being ill enough to need hospital treatment or die. Time will tell if it does more than that, I guess?

The point I was making was that DM doesn't really see anyone though other than me, and we've had Covid, so at the moment her being vaccinated doesn't make much difference, and I'm worried that her life is slipping away and she hasn't got much time left.

On the plus side there were queues the on the first day the practice started, though not three hours, but we walked straight in yesterday. The actual second appointment was a lot quicker with less info to go through.

TabbyStar · 10/01/2021 07:54

That Daily Mail article is awful, and I notice again they're picking on middle aged (ish) women.

Lifeinaonesie · 10/01/2021 08:07

I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if they announce that all women's bank accounts will be suspended to stop them spreading covid at the supermarket/buying a Starbucks/exposing delivery men to covid. This whole thing has been so gendered.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 10/01/2021 08:30

Just seen professor Susan Mickey (sp?) SAGE advisor, on BBC breakfast talking about how we need more restrictions as people are finding loopholes and there will be tens of thousands of avoidable deaths in the coming weeks if we don't shut down completely.
But then she cited examples of "countries who got on top of it early" who are now back to normal life. Clearly talking about Australia and New Zealand and how we should do now what they did then. How are we even comparable?
The scary thing is, she would normally just be seen as another voice on the news, but the presenter made a point of saying saying sat on sage, so now that's it now. The perception being that sage are saying we need to lock down harder will be validated and folks will be begging for it.
All based on some woman who just wants us to be like fucking New Zealand.

Dh also made the point last night that telling us hospital admissions in the daily figures means nothing, as 4300 admissions in the UK sounds scary. There are 1910 hospitals.
So whilst some hospitals will be at crisis point and getting loads, that means that an awful lot will be little or none. Also as people are being admitted, others will be being discharged, so why don't they just focus on how many are in hospital with covid?

^But even though the pandemic is undoubtedly taking many lives, it is important to remain as cool-headed as we can about these numbers.

For a deeper look at them shows you that the story isn't quite as dramatic as some of the headlines might suggest^
