The saga continues to continue with more sequels than a trilogy of trilogies...

@Tmpnamechange

If masks are brought in outside, might I suggest the Viking ski mask

On a more serious note, I walk some pretty quiet routes sometimes and I'm just imagining masked, hoodied or hatted men coming toward me and trying to work out from body language along if it needs to turn around and run or not.
It's happened a few times on the street and I've gone into instant flight or fight mode.

Yes, that unnerves me. I run solo in remote places and there's one spot that is hard to avoid where there was a nasty mugging 3 years ago at this time of year in the neighbouring village. I'm used to being vililant, looking at people and assessing their purpose... do I need to activate my attack alarm... Certainly youths in hoodies and masks in a quiet spot would have me sprinting and my fingers close to my wrist. Sorry to the majority of youths who are decent people. But hey, social conditioning, and while it was a different setting I have had an encounter with someone who didn't know the meaning of consent... (I hope his neck hurt after I kicked him in the face)

Add in lip reading/ facial communication/ processing muffled speech issues.

Probably some birth trauma too judging by my reaction to out of place surgical style being worse than patterns.

Add in that I have breathing issues with humidity that are normally managable and limited. Plus probably being a bit more sensory than average (no trouser phobia like DS, but a stray hair or awkward label can utterly distract me)

So it's quite a problem really!

Now. I wish there was a known signal for saying that while I'm happy to distance from you, I'm really not overanxious about us passing each other, so please play it how you want to.
I think Big fish, Little fish, Cardboard box would convey the sentiment well Grin

@smallandimperfectlyformed I have a 5yo too and have been setting up zoom playdates. It's.not the same but she will happily take my iPad around the house while talking with a friend. Often the friends parent and I will set up similar activities,.like colouring a similar picture or something and they chat while they do it.

I did go out today and happen to accidentally see DD's best friend out in the same field though, at exactly the same time. What a stroke of luck! Grin

It's like when (in the old days) someone waits at the top of the stairs for you to go up because they don't want to crossover, and you think should I say thank you but you didn't want them to stop in the first place, they're doing it entirely for themselves!

Hi all.
I discovered the secret of clearing the pavements. Walk down the road to the post box with your Covid Test Box on display.
It was like the parting of the sea.
(Should explain it was my weekly one for work).
Just been reading the thread about whether to drive to Mcds or not. By the Christ they're out with their opinions tonight.
Wine and Flowers for everyone having a hard time at the moment.

We’ve left up our outside fairy lights as we thought they were suitably cheering. Someone on our local chat group has said let’s all #lightuplockdown (which makes my toes curl) because it would help cheer up key workers on their way home from a long shift (barf) .. I pointed out that it wasn’t just key workers who needed extra cheer right now Hmm

I thought a red/amber/green lanyard or badge system might work...red for 'I want to social distance', amber for 'I don't mind either way', green for 'I don't do social distancing' Grin

@Pleasedontdothat best of luck for the funeral this week. @Lifeinaonesie I might suggest that to her best friends nan next week, though she/I will have to do some serious tidying before I let anyone see the state of our flat!Blush

Have been on here a while but name changed. What the fuck is going here today. There is thread about testing kids or they aren't allowed in schools. The OP has made some really nasty vile comment

A poster said her SEN child wouldn't cope with the test and she said how would your child feel if the killed someone by giving them COVID? What the actual fuck? Who in their right mind would say something like that to a parent clearly struggling.

Thankfully we have a break from NS up here over the weekend but I'm already dreading Mondays briefing.

Hugs to you @LivinLaVidaLoki I hope your brother recovers well.

Hello all.

amicissimma · 09/01/2021 20:25

I really don't want to encourage anyone to go 'over there', but those of you who are letting even a twinge of guilt into your minds about taking a school place should have a look at what the sort of people who have taken it upon themselves to judge are saying. Honestly, ignoring them is insufficient, you should pride yourself on actively doing what they don't like.

And, of course, pride yourself on doing what is right for your family and child(ren).

I rarely look at the main boards, it's too scary!

I needed to hear this, thank you. My eldest is in school (year 5) as DH is a secondary school teacher. Back in March we also had the option to send eldest in but didn't do so as we thought it wasn't fair on the school etc. What followed were some of the worst weeks/months of our collective family and working lives as we were both trying to work with all 3 kids at home (youngest was 8 months) . So this time he has gone in to school. I have been feeling guilty but DH has urged me not to. Says at his secondary school they are welcoming the critical worker kids as they need a critical mass to make lessons lively and socialising fun for the kids.

A number of friends/acquaintances have been saying bloody shocking stuff about it all in social media. I feel constantly bashed over the head.

rosettesforjill · 09/01/2021 20:44

Hello all. Took DD to the playground today and all the outdoor gym equipment that nobody ever uses was taped up, but it warmed my heart to see a pair of women in their golden years ILLEGALLY sharing a bottle of fizz at one of the picnic tables. Glass flutes and everything 🥂

OECD: Lockdowns here to stay, even with vaccine plan

MercyBooth yep, some pretty horrible opinions on that thread.
I had to call 999 for OH a few weeks back
"does he have a cough?"
"No, he's.."
"does he have a temperature, a fever?"
" No, he doesn't have any COVID symptoms at all"
"Does he have a loss of taste or smell?"
"Well not before he had his seizure, I can't really check now as he has lost consciousness"
"Has he had any other unusual symptoms". "Yes, he's lying on the floor shaking, drooling, has bitten through his tongue and has pissed himself. He doesn't normally do that"
To be fair the paramedics were brilliant and the hospital ran thorough tests. Once wegpt over the initial barrier, they were pretty good.

During my "exercise" in a park which I drove eight miles to get to, I saw some young adults using the fenced-off fitness equipment: they had simply moved the fencing. Good for them!

I've had various tradesmen into the house, partly out of necessity. I even let them use the toilet as well!

Buzzinwithbez · 09/01/2021 20:54

I've been around a while but have name changed.

This is very sad. A woman in her 90s, husband in a care home. Both vaccinated and thought it would mean they could see each other.

Interesting comment further down about how it can be seen as a treatment, rather than a vaccine.

So if a vaccine is 90 percent effective ( I suspect less for this age group?) and flu vaccine considerably much less so, why is visiting with a relative in these circumstances still a problem.
How much longer should a 90 year old have to wait to see her husband!

Wilberforce42 · 09/01/2021 20:55

The dementing this time is far worse than March. We’ve had to take a key worker school place for my middle son but the guilt is wieghing on me. I just cannot homeschool my secondary age son who has ADD and needs constant support and supervise my 4 year ok with global delay at the same time. It was a necessary action to keep us all sane sadly.

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/01/2021 20:57

In terms of home schooling, is there anything l can do to help? Obviously you don't want some random from MN zoom calling your kids, but if your children are struggling and you can't help in that particular subject, I'm an expert in Food Science / Technology and reasonable in various other subjects. I don't mind looking at work or pointing in the right direction for self research, although I can't promise an immediate response as I am still working myself

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/01/2021 21:04

Buzzinwithbez yes, at the moment I would say it's more prophylaxis than a vaccine like e. g. MMR.
It doesn't appear to stop you getting it, it's not known if you can then transmit it.
It just has a somewhat less than 90% chance of stopping you dying from it.
In the circumstances you describe, the reasonable thing would be to allow visits. A 90 year old could, theoretically have 15 years to live, but realistically they probably don't. Sorry to be blunt and sorry if that offended anyone.

Gratefulrunner · 09/01/2021 21:07

Oh all the gym equipment in our local parks has been taped off too. I’m really tempted to go out for a super early morning run with my scissors and free it all!
