What/who embodies sophistication for you?

Just watching the Sound of Music with DD (her latest obsession).

Watching the Baroness with grownup eyes and she does it for me: not only does she dress beautifully but she has a sense of humour (the boat scene) and then departs the fray gracefully when she realises that the Captain loves Maria, even before he realises. I want to be like her.

Celine Dion - she's very graceful

TheScurrilousFunge · 06/01/2021 19:57

OP, I've never thought about that, but it's so true. The baroness is a classy lady.

For me, it's Erin O'Connor. She's so beautiful and classy.

devildeepbluesea · 06/01/2021 20:00

@TheScurrilousFunge I think she was a woman ahead of her time!! She refused to demean herself by fighting dirty to keep a man she knew didn't love her, and she also pushed the two of them together. As well as.being witty, graceful and beautiful. She's amazing.

Patsy Stone, a true lady 🥂

Soutiner · 06/01/2021 20:29

Luna De Casanova. Beauty, charm, elegance, humour and kindness combined.

Buzzer3555 · 06/01/2021 20:31

Well i always think posh crisps are the height of sophistication

HiveQueen · 06/01/2021 20:33

Audrey Hepburn, the epitome of elegance and sophistication

Buzzer3555 · 06/01/2021 20:42

Hivequeen....i agree

bearlyactive · 06/01/2021 21:09

Another one - quite fittingly, Miranda Priestly from the Devil Wears Prada. Not her personality of course, but her fashion taste Grin

toolazytothinkofausername · 06/01/2021 21:11

After Eight mints. Very sophisticated.

CosyAcorn · 06/01/2021 21:13

Do book characters count? Rebecca De Winter.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 06/01/2021 21:15

People who can strike up an easy conversation with absolutely anyone, at any time.

Blondiney · 06/01/2021 21:17

Kristen Scott Thomas has a sort of haughty sophistication. Too icy for me.

cariadlet · 06/01/2021 21:24

Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

devildeepbluesea · 06/01/2021 21:26

@CosyAcorn given that I started the thread with a largely fictional character (or at least a fictional depiction of a real person) then I'd say absolutely yes.

Yes! So much more interesting than her successor Grin
amusementPark · 06/01/2021 21:36

I would say Bree from Desperate Housewives.

RaininSummer · 06/01/2021 21:39

Joanna Lumley (but maybe not in her Patsy incarnation).

Guineapigbridge · 06/01/2021 21:44

For me it's the Hotel Inspector, Alex Polizzi. Classy, intelligent, kind and funny. Natural.

merryhouse · 06/01/2021 21:45

" a young woman out there who will never be a nun" - Love the baroness!

Audrey Hepburn is too pixie to be sophisticated. Katherine all the way.

The queen.

cariadlet · 06/01/2021 21:55

I love Katherine Hepburn, a very strong, smart woman. But I don't really think of her as sophisticated.

plg21 · 06/01/2021 21:57

Gillian Anderson in The Fall. I think it's the silk blouses.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/01/2021 22:00

Another vote for Joanna Lumley.
She even made sophisticated little slippers for living in a cave in the middle of nowhere.

Imissmoominmama · 06/01/2021 22:02

My first thoughts were Honor Blackman and Joanna Lumley.
