If the economy was based on your personal spending habits how would it look ?

I was pondering earlier (( not much else to do these days )) and totting up how much I've spent this week.

It came to £70 in Aldi, around £3 in home bargains on cleaning stuff and that's it.

No takeaways, no car to run, I don't drink or smoke so no revenue there. We spend a fair bit on travel but only use trains so no flying.

I spend maybe £100 or so a year on clothes, I don't subscribe to anything online.

If the economy was based on my spending habits we'd be goosed. More so than we are now. Does anyone else fare better ?

My economy would be full of independent craft goods and services.

Craft bread, craft beer, homemade wine, original art works, local manure delivered by the farmer, hand dyed hammocks in the garden, hand made furniture, recycled kitchen. Truly, truly we would be like French Hobbits, only tall.

Nope. I spend circa 40 per week at lidl. I may hit pound land or wilko rarely and spend 2.50 on a mug. Woohoo.
Tbh, my money is working for me, not the economy. I'm overpaying on the mortgage as it is a millstone. Savings rates are shite and so is most of the tat that they try to convince me that I need.

Livery yard, vet, horse dentist, animal feed and bedding eg hay and straw, cocaine, weed, psychedelics (truffles and shrooms), petrol, tobacco products, cheese, black beans/chickpeas/pinto beans, corn tortillas, coffee beans, sugar

Forgot the tequila and subscriptions to stuff like audible Spotify dogtv Netflix Duolingo Pawfit (activity/gps tracker for dogs)

as my contribution to the house is food for two adults four cats at around £400 a month the economy wouldnt look very healthy

Rent, utilities, food, bitcoin, second hand clothing

Bookshops and publishing would rule the world if my spending habits were scaled up to the whole economy.

Plus wine.

All the tv subscriptions.
Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, booths
Homeware stores
Book stores
Vets
Local independent takeaways
Lots of independent cafes / bars (usually....)

Barely any cinemas, bowling alleys, anything aimed at children, not much by the way of clothes.

Aldi and the vet's would be doing well.
Everything else - on its knees.

Ebay for second hand books and clothing would do well.

My biggest expense is DS2's piano lessons /music therapy

£80 a week in Lidl and about £20 in morrisons getting the stuff I cant get in Lidl.

Then it's just mortgage, bills and petrol and a bit of savings.

In normal years Tui do quite well out of us for our annual holiday, but that's all relative as I spend much less than some of the prices I see on here.

Only Waitrose and John Lewis would survive. Everything else would go to the wall pretty quickly.

I mostly buy second hand so if the economy is based on me then I’d struggle to find second hand pieces as no one would be buying new

I’m also a saver rather than a spender in spite of dire interest rates so banks would probably collapse at the lack of borrowing people would be doing

The high street would however be full of shops selling yarn and basic essential oils and cheese

I’ve spent £350 in four different supermarkets, had 2 takeaways, a couple of takeaway drinks, ordered I few bits from high street shops online, booked a holiday, spent quite a bit in Wilko, so I’m still doing my bit for the economy.

I could fuel a couple of countries’ economies based solely on my artisanal cheese habit.

Well I picked last year to not buy anything I really didn't need, so the plastic tat economy is already on its knees

Apart from food nothing. In tier 4 though so everything is shut

Waitrose and Aldi would be OK. I generally do most of our shopping in Aldi and then get a few treaty bits in Waitrose with the money I save by shopping in Aldi.

Zooplus would be grand, as would the vets (cat fosterer)

All the chain restaurants, hairdressers, beauty salons and coffee shops would go bust as I never spend a penny in any of these.

The local wood fired pizza place and Indian street food bar would do OK, and would do even better if they set up closer to my house.

If Amazon can keep going with me spending a fiver a month on 99 p kindle books, they'd still be thriving.

I've looked around a few times at all the popular shops and restaurants etc and realised that I've never been in them.

The coop would dominate all other supermarkets.
And deliveroo would be king

Last year would have been Aldi, but they don’t deliver, so now it’s those that do.
Amazon make money out of me, but lots of that is independent sellers. They won’t make much on my Kindle book borrowing.
All the yarn stores will though.

My hairdresser would manage, but beauty salons, nail bars, restaurants, coffee shops would struggle.

The UK economy would be booming, my own, not so much. I have spent over 3k in the last month online from UK websites. That might change this year depending on how hard I get hit with VAT and excise duties. The main culprits have been Neom 300, sweaty Betty 200, plt, 200, ASOS 200, Amazon UK 1000, LF 300 and then other one off spends.

My Economy would be centred around the Supreme Rulers of the Known Universe.

The bastarding cats. Super posh food ordered in bulk from Europe (so no Brexit as that might harm the Feline overlords' breakfasts), great sacks of kitty litter (the ones made from bran husk), an immediate legalisation of all psychoactive substances to prevent a black market emerging in Catnip, Valerian and Spider Plants, pillow, throws and cardboard boxes. A fair bit of environmentally friendly cleaning products as I'm not a fan of poisoning them or the creatures they enjoy watching out of the window, assorted ingredients for bird food.

There would also be a very healthy trade in Sushi rice and chilli. The Ding Dinner market would be in ruins, as would the ones in clothes, uncomfortable shoes and electrical items, as they are only replaced if desperately missed when they fall apart/are beyond repair.

I’m a spender so it would be thriving.

Beauty and homeware in particular, with this years candle expenditure. M&S Foodhall, John Lewis and Space NK would be on every high street. Florists, card shops and bakeries would boom If pre COVID, cinemas and Korean or Lebanese restaurants would be doing well too.

Gyms, or anything sport related would not survive, nor would the butchers or charity shops.

Just remembered I get milk and cheese delivered from a local farm. So dairy farms and milkmen would do pretty well.

I am only replace stuff when needed. Household is heavily in to electronics.

Since lockdown we have bought outside garden furniture for 1500, Chiminea 200, patio slabs, sand, screening, cement 1000, Xbox 500, mattress topper 100, headboard 100, robotic hoover 200. As we have not had holiday this year we did the outside area.

All shops that sell fripperies like candles and anything just for show would all disappear. All shops that sell practical stuff would thrive. Art and craft shops would still be there

We spend between about 100 a week on groceries between 3 of us DS is 6ft 5 and eats loads.
