Just spotted a Parakeet on my dog walk in NW England. It’s freezing!

Where? I can't see it in your photos.

Plonque · 04/01/2021 14:24

Whereabouts in Nw are you? I feel like I recognise the place.

blazinglightonthehill · 04/01/2021 14:25

There's no parakeet on that second photo

HildegardNightingale · 04/01/2021 14:26

Sorry we tried to get a photo of the parakeet but he was too fast. Photo is to show how cold it is. We are in Lancashire.

Yes we have a couple here on the Fylde coast too Smile

LarsErickssong · 04/01/2021 14:29

Apparently 5 escaped from London zoo about 25/30 years ago and have bred and spread across the NW, this is what my dad has always told me but not sure where he got this info from!

Plonque · 04/01/2021 14:29

Is there a cycle way that runs down there?

RedMarauder · 04/01/2021 14:29

They apparently originate from the Himalayas so English weather is fine for them.

HildegardNightingale · 04/01/2021 14:30

@Plonque -mcycle route yes.

SoupDragon · 04/01/2021 14:31

We have a local flock (South .London/Surrey). They are SO noisy!

RedMarauder · 04/01/2021 14:32

And I was reading yesterday those bloody birds are now in and around Manchester.

The RSPB doesn't want them culled even though they have been culled in one of London's Royal Parks.

They are noisy destructive pests and are displacing British birds so should be culled. Anyone who lives in an area infested with them can tell you that.

SoupDragon · 04/01/2021 14:34

The Wiki entry has them on London for Winter though. Yours must be hardier than the soft southerner parakeets 😂

Ken1976 · 04/01/2021 14:36

There is parakeets in our town hall park. We're in the NW too

MadisonAvenue · 04/01/2021 14:38

I’m in the Midlands and someone posted pictures of some locally over the weekend. I knew that there were a number of them down south but hadn’t heard of them being up here before but it might explain what the yellow-green birds were that I’ve seen a few times in the trees when walking the dog.

Plonque · 04/01/2021 14:39

Looking at the pics again, I don't think it's where I thought it was.
I meant pushbikes Grin

SOLINVICTUS · 04/01/2021 14:40

Are these the little green ones?
There's been an invasion into Europe over the last couple of years.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 04/01/2021 14:41

@SoupDragon

Second this!

We have at least 3 dozen, they're very chatty (NE England coast) and they live between 2 local parks and DC school - they're all within a mile of each other.

I had to stop the car the first time I saw them - couldn't believe my eyes (they seem to like dusk so the road was empty - I didn't just slam my brakes during rush hour Grin)

ILiveNearby · 04/01/2021 14:42

There’s a family of them in Stanley Park in Blackpool.

ZadieZadie · 04/01/2021 14:57

I absolutely love them.

I'm in W London so we've had big flocks of them for years, and although I know they're noisy and invasive they're also so pretty!

blazinglightonthehill · 04/01/2021 18:02

Them soft southern keets got nowt on the northern ones.

Not even big coat weather yet
