Just spotted a Parakeet on my dog walk in NW England. It’s freezing!

They’re gorgeous.. we used to see them in greenwich park all the time but this year we’ve started seeing them in our garden (NE London), they are really noisy

toycat · 04/01/2021 18:08

Loads in Manchester parks!

NanTheWiser · 04/01/2021 21:56

@SoupDragon

We have a local flock (South .London/Surrey). They are SO noisy!
Must be near to me Soup. The big park opposite me is full of ‘em, and I get flocks flying over or perching in nearby trees, and they make such a racket!

My mum and dad had a couple on their bird feeder a few weeks ago, also NW. I haven't seen them but heard them, unbelievably noisy!

Cherrysoup · 04/01/2021 22:27

So loud! North London borders and they all wait in a particular tree at the yard before screeching off to wherever they roost.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 04/01/2021 23:00

@RedMarauder

And I was reading yesterday those bloody birds are now in and around Manchester.

The RSPB doesn't want them culled even though they have been culled in one of London's Royal Parks.

They are noisy destructive pests and are displacing British birds so should be culled. Anyone who lives in an area infested with them can tell you that.

Never caused a problem for us here. Don't have much in the way of fruit crops, though.
OneWildNightWithJBJ · 04/01/2021 23:02

We’ve had them visit our garden in Herts for a while.

Thousands of them in the SE. I’ve got a small flock in and around my garden, increases by a couple year on year, up to about ten now. For the last five years I’ve fought a battle with them for who can get to my cherries first. Literally the minute that they’re ripe the little fuckers will strip the tree bare before I even notice. I did win the war this year and got a good crop off before they did. I’ve only got a small orchard but could be a problem for fruit farms down here as they keep expanding their territory. More importantly, we have greater spotted and green woodpeckers here nesting in the trees. Parakeets also nest in the holes in the trees but they nest before the woodpeckers so there’s a real danger they will start to push the woodpeckers out. Fingers crossed that so far the woodpeckers seem to be holding on, but as the flock grows, who knows how long for.

nitgel · 04/01/2021 23:15

They're planning on culling them.

We used to have a flock in the tree outside. They appeared every year but I guess they were culled about 10 years ago now as haven't seen them since.

Mainly see them lately in st James park where they're super friendly.

KingsHeathen · 04/01/2021 23:26

Ooh- I saw one in the park on Christmas Day, screeching his head off!
Apparently there's a colony of 15-20 in the park down the road, and he was probably from there. I'm in the Midlands.

partyatthepalace · 05/01/2021 00:02

There are lots in Richmond Park SW London - I had no idea they were so widespread though!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/01/2021 00:07

If they appear here any time soon I hope they're polite and get on well with the other birds.

A charm of goldfinches has just started visiting me, and I don't want anything to put them off! They're so bright and cheerful looking, I love seeing them.

SlopesOff · 05/01/2021 00:36

We have the noisy little sods in our trees. Other birds are vanishing because they chase them off.

40somethingJBJ · 05/01/2021 02:02

I’m Midlands and have spotted a few ringnecks in a local park recently. I was amazed how many were in the Netherlands last time we were there, there were hundreds of them up in the trees.

Robbybobtail · 05/01/2021 02:05

Yep, I’ve seen them in the didsbury area - assumed it was someone’s pet had escaped!

longwayoff · 05/01/2021 08:40

They are as tough as old boots and so prolific in south west London they are being culled.

HazelBite · 05/01/2021 08:47

Apparently they were first spotted in the UK around 1855, so all the stories about how they came to be here are just fairy stories!
Quite how they have become so prolific in the last 50 odd years is a mystery however.

twistedsistersocks · 05/01/2021 08:52

I've never seen them in the wild in this country.

Yes I read about this too. Apparently there's thousands of them living wild.
BrightonForWine · 05/01/2021 09:27

I've seen them several times in Brighton over the years.
They look so out of place! I love seeing them.

mrswhiplington · 05/01/2021 10:21

We saw some in Didsbury, Manchester on Saturday. You could hear them before you saw them. We had one visiting our garden in east Manchester a couple of years ago, it was a bit of a bully and used to scare the other birds away. It loved the berries on the rowan tree.

Blingismything · 05/01/2021 10:22

There are loads in Windsor.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 05/01/2021 14:44

There is a small colony living around Haslam Park in Preston. There not enough of them to cause problems yet.

TabbyM · 05/01/2021 16:43

There's a small flock in Glasgow and a couple in Aberdeen too...

Crankley · 05/01/2021 17:09

There's a big flock that use my friend's NDN's garden as a base in the big tree in Bexley.
